The melody and chords of this song originally belong to an old work song (dating back to the early 1900’s) of the olive pickers in Abruzzo. In the mid-20th century, Domenico Modugno turned it into a pop song with Italian lyrics no longer about working in the fields but about something much more pressing at the time, and still pressing today: the feeling of leaving your home. Whether referring to the internal migration within Italy that is still occurring today, internal migration within the US, or worldwide immigration in general, this song with old roots is still relevant over half a century after its inception.
Researcher Leo Ravera wrote an article on this song comparing it to American music from the same time period. He says “The best-known work songs are certainly those that originated on American plantations and contributed to the birth of the blues and jazz.” He goes on to point out that this folk song has many points of contact with blues and work songs, not only because of the similar context but also for musical reasons as it follows a similar, simple form to blues music.
