Now just got to finish the outside of the pond and make it look nice enough where dad even liked it I thought about what it would look like to match the basement and what it would look like to look like a pond I think the best idea would be with marble and or granite of some sort it would be expensive but at this point you got to make Dad happy LOL

Ed, I noted in the video Greg’s mom’s fish were eaten by mink. This past winter in a matter of days (from what I can tell) mink ate all but one of my goldfish in my pond (so about 50). Do you have any tips for deterring mink? Thanks!!
Blue heron almost wiped out my friends koi pond. Mink have to breathe air. Have a very deep water pocket with a sunken shelter for fish to hide in. She also had to place a steel mesh over her pond to discourage the Blue Herons. She could still feed them & enjoy them, but they weren't " easy pickings" anymore! A big outdoor dog also helps.
How did they solve the mink problem?

It’s not necessary as Koi are cold water fish and they’ll do fine staying in the pond but some customers like to bring them inside for the winter so they can enjoy them.

Question: Why did U use sand, instead of, say, small rocks/gravel, or no bottom cover! It seems like it will be harder to clean than otherwise. Just curious, every one does it different!

Always thought that conventional wisdom suggest that sand bottom ponds are not a good idea in the long run for the health of the eco system? Is there something done here to negate that?

Actually have a self built 11x8 aquascape eco system pond myself in Singapore!
Keep the sand to a minimum and make sure you have species in the system that will agitate/feed on the bottom, this will keep the sand from becoming anaerobic

We wanted a light colored substrate and this was the best option.

Sand is not good. It will get very dirty in a short while. The fish will get sick eventually. Keep the pond as clean as possible. You make beginners mistakes.

But Koi are in the Carp family and are originally found in Rivers located in China.
The rivers are highly diverse with a variety of substrates including sand and gravel.
They’ll do better in enclosures that mimic their natural habitats......
@@EdThePondProfessor We are not talking about the origin of the koi, we are talking about koi keeping here, and its not that good putting sand on a koi pond especially thos kois are imported from japan and it is so expensive. here in the Philippines we carefully care of our koi's to prevent them from scratching the floor even we don't have sand on our ponds but still the koi will have wound if they scratch their body we cannot control them from scratching, believe those kois in that video soon if they feel something itchy on their body they will scratch on the sand and it will have wound, goodluck to george haha
