    Having worked in so many industries and jobs that require one to move trailers around (if you'd like, I can tell you my most extreme case: Squirrel Hill Tunnel in Pittsburgh, 2013)), I somehow landed on this video.
    Back in 1996 I was 16 years old and working for a local landscape company who was doing most everything out of his own home. At the end of every day, I would have to back up his trailer into his garage.
    His driveway wasn't straight, it was up-hill with a slight right curve, and there was only about 3" clearance on each side of the trailer when putting it into the garage. I managed that perfectly every single day, and most importantly I didn't crash the back of the trailer.
    This all seems like too much work and is very slow. Just learn how to drive!

      Joseph Fetz cool story, thanks for sharing. Personally, I don't use this feature, but I can see why some people would.

    Thanks man, I just found out about this feature. I been wanting to learn how to properly back up a trailer, but I really don't have anyone to teach me so maybe this will help. I know people will probably make fun of me, but oh well.

    I never have backed up anything by Truck, but I've heard if you want the trailer to go one way, you steer the opposite way, which is counter intuitive to me. I'm considering buying a 25 foot Airstream Trailer, and what has scared me was backing it up into something because of lack of experience. With this option I feel that it could help me gain confidence backing it up at camp sites and into tight places.
    The Airstream Dealership rents out Ford F150 Trucks so that if you visit them and want to buy a Camper, and don't own a Truck, you can rent one and then drive the Camper off the lot. The sales lady at Airstream told me to purchase a Truck that can pull it's heaviest Airstream in case I wanted to upgrade to a 30 foot camper sometime in the future. I've never owned a Truck before, but I imagine the Ford 150 can handle the job because it is what they carry for their rentals.
    Having this back up feature could be the factor of actually buying a Camper because it would take the fear of backing up out of the equation. I would get a 2018 or 2019 Ford 150 with the Towing Package. Probably get the larger engine with transmission that can handle big loads.
    I don't know if you know Ford Trucks, but do you think the 150 is enough truck for towing 13K Pounds, and if you never backed anything up...is the Trailer Assist a Game Changer?
    Thanks,
    Dave

      David Gabrie Hi there.
      13k is too much weight for an F150. You will want to go to a super duty with a trailer that big. Cheers!

    Nice job on the video, only question is Do you have to keep turning the Knob while backing up, or, do you just turn it once in the direction you want the trailer to steer?

    i dont understand so instead of using the wheel you use a knob?

    • @randomrepair1680
      @randomrepair1680  Před 5 lety

      Yup. Love the knob.

    • @ffinkral
      @ffinkral Před 4 lety

      When normally backing up a trailer you turn the wheel left to make the trailer go right. Wheel right to make the trailer go left. With this you turn the knob left to make the trailer go left. Knob right to make the trailer go right. And let go of the knob and the truck will automatically correct itself back to straight. Makes it very simple to back up a trailer. Some people have a hard time using inverted turning when backing up a trailer.

    Not sure how this helps if you still have to steer the trailer with a little knob in lieu of your steering wheel.

    • @randomrepair1680
      @randomrepair1680  Před 6 lety

      Bob S now the trailer moved in the direction you move the knob and returns to centre when you let go. It's actually very clever. That being said, I rarely use it

    Is Ford serious about all those measurements? What happened to just backing up a trailer? And since you’re in Canada, why aren’t you using metrics..eh?

    • @randomrepair1680
      @randomrepair1680  Před 4 lety

      Not sure what the first question or second question is all about, but to answer to the metric, we use a combination of both generally. It's a bit confusing

      chevyguy17 @ May your reasoning be that the Chevy doesn't have this available? Chevy has technology in their current trucks that Ford has had for years. If you can't play with the big dogs, stay on the porch! Real people, not actors. lol

    • @cyurenes9961
      @cyurenes9961 Před 5 lety +1

      Gus Almighty what’s wrong with putting aluminum on a truck? Chevrolet is putting aluminum on their trucks now and they used to make fun of Ford because of that. Very Hypocritical...

  • @newcoyote
    @newcoyote Před 5 lety

    Anyone dumb enough that they cannot figure out how to back up a trailer is not going to have ANY hope of getting the setup correct.
