- Grand Theft Auto 2 or "GTA 2" is an open world/action game. It was made by DMA Design (known currently as Rockstar North) and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on PC and Playstation in 1999.
GTA 2 does not really differ much from GTA 1. It's mostly the details that have been changed or improved. For example the graphics are a bit better and you can now choose if you want to play at daytime or nighttime (which looks pretty nice with all the lighting effects)
The world has also gotten a bit more dynamic. Pedestrians can now be seen entering a taxi or a bus on occasion. Gangmembers sometimes shoot at cops or thiefs and there are also special NPC's like muggers or carjackers which will either try to steal from other NPC's or even you.
The biggest change was probably the introduction of the "respect meter". In every part of the city there are always three gangs and you can do missions for those. If you complete missions for a gang you earn the respect of them but you lose it for the other (most likely the hostile gang of the one you are working for). Getting respect from a gang is needed to get further missions. If they don't trust you you can't work for them.
You could also get respect by bluntly shooting at gangmembers but the best and quickest way are the missions. Although if you fail a mission you lose respect for the gang you are working for so be careful. Also if a gang starts to hate you it will be much harder to survive in the city because every hostile gang member who will see you is gonna try to kill you.
A similar system exists in GTA 3. The difference here is that GTA 2 is totally open world and you can decide to work for whichever gang you want, whereas GTA 3 kinda forces the player into a predefined path because of how the story was implemented. - Hry

I remember when the first came out and even though the graphics were rubbish, the fact you could steal any car and drive anywhere was pretty mind-blowing.
I did, GTA was my favorite game from the very start.

It really is! You dont see people talking about gta 2 very often, and when you do, its usually people saying its horrible, but its just a 2D version of normal gta.

Just searched for this - so nostalgic! Amazing how I instantly recognized the sound effects such as him walking on metal/tin and the constant ring of the phone.

I remember playing this game when I was 6-7 years old at my neighbour's place, I remember he used the buttons for driving the car meanwhile I was shooting on the keyboard. Eating snacks that his mother made, we had a blast back then.

1999 was the year that created the industry as we know it today. Some of the most iconic franchies were either created or had some of the best entries of the series.
From first super smash bros, to silent hill, Age of Empires 2, Medal of Honor or Quake 3 and the list goes on and on.

I was 5 yrs old when i first played the game. I had no idea what it was back then, just spraying lead and running pedestrians everywhere. Now i’m 27, the nostalgia hits so hard that i just realized t’was a game that a 5 yr old not meant to be played 😅

GTA 2 was the game that made this franchise. The same way that Daggerfall did with Elder Scrolls.
The third games in the franchises were the money makers, it brought the love of the masses. The second games were the ones that made the growth possible.

Back then that was Indie game. It was 1999. Games was 3D since 1993-04-05 simething like that. Back then it was a passion, to be or not to be for a developer. The game was simpler so it didn't require a lot of work. Cyberpunk turned out to be too ambitious and too big for the game's developers.

@@NocnaGlizda GTA was small at that time compared to now but not small enough to be considered an indie game series. it was still really big with a sizeable team of devs working on it.

I remember playing the demo I didn't even know what I was doing but I was having a blast. In speaking of blast the explosion were awesome, making domino effect explosions.

I still have my Playstation along with my old games, including this one. I spent hours on this, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, FFVII, and Chrono Cross. I still have my old NES too. 😁🎮🕹
That theme song and menu sounds are forever *burned* into my memory. I played GTA 1 and 2 to death as a kid. I'd literally play it before school if I got the chance.
Also, fun fact: The police sirens from GTA 2 were used as placeholders for GTA 3's police sirens until they replaced them last minute. Part of me misses them, but I suppose they were low quality.

There’s absolutely no need to use the word “literally”. Playing a game before school isn’t outside the realm of possibility nor is it odd or taboo. Why would you “literally” have to play a game? You can just say, point blank, “I used to play this before school if I got a chance.”

Conceptually I still don't understand how they took the leap from GTA II to GTA III unless GTA III type of gameplay and style of play was always the plan but the tech just wasn't there yet. In that case the entire thing is pure genius and foresight that doesn't get enough credit.
If you played the Mario Games up to the N64 open world Mario although it was 3D and open world you could somewhat envision the progression especially after playing SM 1990 (Yoshi) in which the world was 3D friendly etc. But the GTA leap is like mind blowing.
They also made body harvest so that could have been some of the inspiration. Rockstar had plans to make Red dead revolver Open world but did not have the time so they got the game out and focused on redemption.
The foresight has always been there. Consider that GTA 1 had liberty city , vice city and San Andreas all in one game alongside multiple protagonists
Games like Driver 1 and 2 and Taxi Driver could be considered precursors to 3D GTA
GTA2 has such a unique vibe and style going for it. I can’t explain it; there’s no other game though that feels like GTA2.

I was poor and had no money to play GTA3 so I had this game and I was playing this one and imaging GTA3 I was 10 years old

Memories man, managed to play around for a good while with gta 2, then moving straight to Vice city i never got gta 3 until much later. Gta 1 was before i got my ps1.

These games were awesome. Actually evading the cops for a long time while going on a rampage made more sense as it was giving you points which was also currency. The cars having machine guns and mines fitted for chases. Simply being able to steal any car and listen to music. So much fun back then when most good games were family friendly platformers.
It sounds like they still use the police car engine sound effect in the modern ones.

This still and will always be the greatest period of GTA. I remember playing this for 3 days straight without sleeping on a diet of only weed and hot pockets. Never has a GTA game since inspired me to do so. Those were the days.

ahh, the memories. back in the day it did not run on my rig but my friend's machine was better so we played there. We had the demo which had a 5 minute countdown and we played in hot seat mode and competed on who can cause the most mayhem and score the most points during that timeframe. I was the master of molotovs :)

Me and a schoolmate of mine often visited a computer club after school, to play GTA2 against each other. My favorite was to find invisibility, so his arrow won't point at me, get into a car, pretend that I'm just a regular NPC car, get close to him and run him over. :D

As far as I can tell, GTA 2 was never on an arcade machine. It was never released or officially sold as one. It was strictly a home console game. So if you had played this on an arcade machine, it was likely some modded homemade thing the majority of people never knew existed.

To all watching this there was a game called “ State of Emergency” wich was actually GTA 2.5
I was in the 7th grade and we could play it online. and everyone in the computer lab was playing when we had free time in class
