- Saw this John Deere 5012 at a recent tractor pull, it's got the massive Detroit 12v-71 two stroke diesel in it, which has a displacement of 71ci per cylinder translating to 14.0L (852ci). The beast cranks out 450hp!
We built that tractor nearly 20 years ago in NY. It went to Minnesota for a few years and ended up in New Jersey. We are halfway done with Version 2 which is a 6030 with a V-12. It will be 1000 hp !!!
Always makes me feel good to hear when I bring back memories. That helps me know you guys enjoy the videos
Growing up in the late 50's, when they were building interstate 75 near Cincinnati Ohio. The big two engine Euclid pans would remove rock and soil from the hills all night. The sounds of those Detroit two strokes screaming into the night would just put you to sleep. I miss those days , when things were simple and true.
that 12v71 can give you sunburn, its a pulsed plasma 2 stroke so be careful.
Robert Davis I remember seeing all the equipment when they were building I-75 clear down to Rt25, before that it took us 10 hours to get to SE Ky on 23, what a ride that was.
So did these come with a V12 from the factory ? I know they came with a 6-71.

Never did they have Detroits
👍🇦🇺
Those ol' Detroits will pull all day without breaking a sweat. Gotta love em!
Holy smoke,,,,! ! ! oh my gosh that's the baddest tractor iv seen,,in a long time
They really have a unique sound!
And I thought the 8V71's made an awesome show. Lovely tune it plays.
I love that 2 stroke diesel sound!
I used to work for General Electric Company. We used 12V71T twin turbocharged 600 hp Detroit Diesels as a STARTER MOTOR to crank over the MS 5000 series gas turbine generator sets. You would select Start, the diesel would fire up, idle for about 15 seconds then go to wide open throttle for 5 minutes. A Twin Disc torque converter and a jaw clutch cranked the turbine to 20% speed with that Detroit screaming its guts out, then the turbine would light off and outrun the diesel and go to 100% speed of 5100 rpm. The Detroit Diesel would idle for a few minutes of cool down time then shut off until needed again. Look up Pissed Off Pete for a 12-71 Detroit Diesel in a Rat Rod... Yeah, I love these Detroits.
kimmer6 Yeah I heard they quit making them because they couldn't pass the new emission standards. I often questioned that. I drove a HEMTT with a 8V92 when I was in the Army back in 85-89, It didn't smoke or pollute much
kimmer6 Hushpuppy! that MS5000 is HUGE!!!
LimitedOptionsMan The MS 9000 series made the 5000's look like a toy.
I have a Detroit 3-53 diesel off a small barge that I'm going to make into a trailer mounted Margarita machine...
I take it you buy your ice by the berg and tequila by the railcar?
Inspector general Danny Kaye
That's one cool tractor, believe it or not this engine is only 14 liters, and puts out 450-500hp. Which was insane for a diesel engine designed in the late 50's
There are engines as big as a house but that's pretty impressive in a tractor, love the 2 stroke sound
I wasn't quite sure of the difference but I just looked it up. Thanks for prompting me to educate myself!
Impressive! Gotta love a big iron horse!!!
Glad you liked it mate. They definitely have a distinct sound, once you know what one sounds like you can't mass it!
That is crazy! They sure sound like they are turning more like 10,000 rpm. Torque is unbelievable
My Dad is in to those Detroit Diesel engines. He has two of the V8-71's and they are the same size as the 12 cylinder just 4 cylinders shorter. Very good engines. A lot of people use them in Shrimp boats down here.
That thing is awesome!
The first truck that I drove was an I-H 4070 c.o.e. with an 8V-71 318 h.p. The old WABCO 353ft twin engine self loading paddle scraper had twin turboed 12V-71T's I believe, for a total of 1050 h.p.
Good to see there's no smoke even though it's not a real Deere engine. Good work
Sure is, I knew I had to get a video of it. Thanks my friend!
Engine wasnt "turned up" too much. No huge clouds of black smoke rolling from the stacks when he pulled. Just a naturally powerful engine. Detroits got bad reps because of the leaks, but the main reason for the leaks was idling. They were realiable engines, cost less to rebuild than Cat or Cummins, and the US military used a lot of them; M113 family of apc, tracked artillery, HEMTT tank haulers, even some Sherman tanks in later days of WW2. Cant forget the M561 GAMMMA Goat. They also weighed less than the Cat and Cummins engines allowing for more payload. Never disrespect the old 2 stroke "Screamin' Jimmy", might incur the wrath of one of us "old farts" who drove them and loved them. They also seemed less prone to gelling in cold weather. Our shop guys would go out and start all the fleet in extreme cold, rev them up and set the throttle, and you could hear as the other engines would start shutting down; Cats firts, then Cummins, then Macks, the Jimmies just kept going. If i rmemember correctly, stock hp of a 12v71, non turbo, was 434 hp. All the old engines were meant to be wound higher than todays engines, thats why the old trucks had 4.11 or 4.33 gears ususally.
dont let me fill this 2 stroke with xd100 and feed total loss, i know how to do this, there is walmart high load oil formoula.
A lot of naturally aspirated 475 hp 12v71’s back in the day. Turn em to 2500 rpm and they would pull. Heavy though, 3200-3300 lbs as I recall. Heavier than a 1693 Cat, which is why there weren’t a lot of them out there.
Ask any military mechanic, they're junk.
@@toddgittins5692don't know what you thought you were going to get outta this reply section, this guy made this comment 7 years ago.
@@Asmith-1111 yeah, you're right. A Detroit engine probably blew apart and a piston impaled him. What was I thinking?
Let er scream! I love these old Detroits
Because V12s require no big crankshaft counterweights they hot up really well and still stay reliable. Most 2 strokes respond just by opening the governor a bit. They respond so well because at certain RPMs they make about 1HP per RPM, so an increase in 100RPM may yield a 100HP increase. I use the word MAY. Most 71s and 92s enjoy being held against the governor at 2100RPM when in revenue service :)
Wish I could have heard it in person!
That thing drug that skid like it wasn't even back there,,,that's one bad tractor there my friend
surprized to see how little smoke it puts out too
Nothing beats a detroit!
A Buzzin' Dozen! I like how the owner painted it JD green and yellow.
I absolutely Love the sound of a Detroit 2 stroke.
I re-watched from 2:21 on over & over
Great vid buddy
It is pretty insane!!
Thanks for checking it out hope you enjoyed
Yeah it was burning mighty clean!
Yeah it looks pretty darn good!
Powerful, efficient, reliable, easy to repair and service, rugged, easy starting in any weather and temperature, low particulate emissions (even tho the eco-beaureaucrats in Washington disagree!) cool operation, complete removal of burned gases through blower-valve-uniflow scavenging (The Clark Cycle) instead of 'choking" on it's own spent gases like all 4 stroke diesels are renowned for, and a power impulse EVERY revolution for ALL cylinders--so 12 per revolution--that's a Detroit! The best!
Now that's something special look it out clean it burns. Not throwing a ton of fuel out the stacks is efficiency and well-tuned.
Pretty neat. I am sure he takes it all over
comes with a blower from the factory around 435 hp the 12v71s were put in semis back in the day that was like the highest horsepower truck engine
Really good sound capture!
Yes it is...one huge engine!
I'll say. Those things are unstoppable.
best engines in the world. almost all of our tugboat have them in it
The tractor didn't even know there was a load.
LOL....NO...IT DID NOT!
Lightning and the the sun are 2 stroke
them 2 strokes are funny with a chug on every stroke there is no problem with load. the big cr500 just chugs along at low rpm while the damn 4 joke cr450f has to reve 13k rpm to get the job done!
I know the farmer who owns this tractor, in fact I've seen it and several others in his barn. He's from central New Jersey, Bordentown area. Loves his Detroit Diesel engines.
You're makin' Carter a friggin CZcams Star!! That's the engine in most buses, I'm sure you recognized the sound eh!!☺
He could have taken that sled home with him!!!
that was the plan, but they stopped him! LOL
music to my ears
Yeah they are pretty scary when they are running, always seem like they are going to blow. I've probably heard them on the road before but never paid much attention to them. I'm definitely going to have my eyes and ears out now!!
71 series Detroits typically make max horsepower at about 2100 rpm. 450 hp at 2100 rpm would be 1125 ft-lbs of torque, and that's not even the torque peak. Peak torque is probably around 1400 ft-lbs at 1400 rpm.
You got it right!
He pulled 'er right home!
Looks like a powerful machine. Anyway gave you a thumbs up.
Thanks for the thumbs up!
@@motoforlyfe
You are welcome also.
It sure didn't! I'm pretty sure he stopped because he ran out of room. Thanks for watching!
They where flatlander engines in Trucks ran many 318 or 8v92. Flatland screaming down the blacktop hit a hill constant down shifting.
Yeah buddyI It's a glam tractor!
Over 500hp with 70 injectors on the A setting
You guys are cool man y'all did a good job on this video
It's still coming along, slowly but surely. I'll definitely be doing an update video next for you guys!
I wouldn't mind being the guy who sits in the back of the tractor puller all day!
That sounded healthy
I read something about the 71 series and I think it said that as they get bigger they do just add more cylinders, the v24 might be 4 v8 blocks put together if I remember correctly.
Since the horsepower was higher than I thought the toque could be lower than I expected. I think it may be over 1000 ft lbs though
Yeah I don't know how big of a difference it makes. In any case we know this is a powerful engine eh!!
2:25 STAND ON IT !!!
Those 2 strokes disels pump out the power
just mindblowing!
The harder you run it the better they go!!!
Emissions weren't the only problem with the 2 cycle Detroits they were also a holy fright on fuel
Fuel economy was why Detroits never took off in the U.K. Fuel is expensive here anyway, but when Bedford (the uk truck division of GM) launched the TM in the 70s, operators who tried them couldn't get rid of them fast enough. 5 mpg average was no good to anyone, that was way under what you could get from a Cummins/Gardner/rolls Royce
How bout a BIG tractor with a HUGE Engine!!!!
Right..amazing
Truly a " buzzin dozen "
Yeah buddy! Two stroke diesel, look it up..they are pretty cool
Man that sounds good
Beast!!!!
I think they are real cool!
Almost certainly would have to have an upgraded transmission and rear end in order to with stand that much power
It's funny how your camera didn't pick up on how fast the wheels were spinning.......just made it look like it just walked or vibrated down the track, haha.
Detroit makes a mean engine
Saw this tractor in Sharon Springs,NY in the late 1990s
AH the ol Buzzin Dozen, the only threat I ever had to my 3408, CAT.
Believe it or not. I got married on that tractor
Is this in NJ? I think this is where we go. I’ll have to pay attention to see if it’s there. Love those old Detroit diesels!!
They sure do man. Thanks for the comment.
Must be the narrator's first pull.
I don't think your friend is too happy about being compared to a tractor tire :D
12v71 Detroit. Should put jakes on it, just for the sound.
Glad to have somebody with some knowledge on the models. Is it still a 5012 with the straight 6 in it or is the model changed when they added the different engine?
Yeah you are right...it has lots of left over power
i have a video called tug Miseford stack its a video of one tug i work on that has a detroit diesel quad 71 pack, its 4 6-71's mounted to one gearbox. its just a quick video of the stack while she is reving. havent got around to take a new video yet.
cooey84 I was in us army trans Corp there were some of the quad, tri and double setups in LCU and other landing craft left over from WW2 and Korea. couple of BARCS . Barges with 4 big rubber tires and Detroit generator on each wheel. Supposed to go anywhere, got tossed around like a cork
Good!!!!
Sled, what sled? There was a sled behind that tractor? LOL, Damn!
Ya john deere real Power
I never understood why people find diesels that pour out black smoke like the first one cool. Now the detroit, which only smoked a tiny bit, yeah that's nice.
It's not a fault. It's due to the diesel not being burned quick enough.
Joel Sadler
It is absolutely a fault. They tune the engines to where they have more valve overlap and therefor more unburnt fuel, which causes the smoke.
justfakeit888 The thicker the exhaust fumes are the more power the tubo puts out due too better spooling.
justfakeit888
it a two stroke it don't have valves silly you
Partly. You are correct, I wasn't thinking quite right, as there can't be valve overlap, but there are still exhaust valves in a Detroit.
there was never any such model factory released. its just a farmer having fun with his tractor and renamed the model to honor its bigger engine. its still a 5010 or 5020 thoigh
Torque on a 12-71 is about 1290lb.ft @ 1400 RPM while Horse for a non-turboed 12v-71N
476 hp, @ 2100 rpm
They can be opened up a bit on RPM, 2300 rpm is a common rating, short times at 2500 rpm won't hurt them, 2100 rpm is peak power rpm.
1250 torque Isn't a torque monster
the original engine would have been a 531 ci straight 6 diesel that makes about 133hp and some ridiculus torque.many were modifed to get more hp out of them. but some tractors were repowered with the 12v-71 engines
Yes Burlington County Fairgrounds
He must like those fumes!
450hp IS RIDICULOUS for a diesel like that! Nice find man!
Might have been there somewhere!
It's a NA engine with a very good tune, it was just starting to get down and bogey when he ran out strip, notice the paint isn't even discoloured on the exhaust manifolds, it's not working very hard.
