In this video: Once upon a time I've got an idea about testing all power supplies for pedals that I could find.
A few months later, at #TGU18 my idea materialized.
I managed to collect as many 9V adapters as it was possible and tested them all.

Extremely useful shootout and extremely boring comparison to make. You're a hero for making this video. Seriously, thank you very much.
Best pedal power supply review I've seen on the internet. Congratulations on the video.
Brick of sorrow
I am seriously impressed with your work!
Brick of Sorrow! Great video man! Thanks a lot!
Brick of sorrow .... Amazing tests once again .. thanks
You are a complete hero! This is awesome. Subscribed
This video was very informative, please continue doing videos like this in the future! There is too much dubious facts and misleading marketing in the gear industry, you help to shed some light into it! Also, brick of sorrow.
Brick Of Sorrow.
Thanks for your painstaking effort and time to make this comparison video.
Brick of sorrow! Thanks for the nerdyness!
I love nerdy video’s 😂👌🏻
Thank you very much for your excellent work and humor 🙏
Great stuff man!
Appreciate it!
Great informative video
Excellent review. Any plans to do a similar test on dedicated pedalboard power supplies (multi-output)? It would be especially interesting to see what's all this hype about isolated outputs.
Many Bricks of Sorrow... I need to build a noisebox, this could be useful in many non-Guitar cases as well. Thanks for this!
a fantastic video! thank you so much
Brick of sorrow. Excellent. Thank you.
Awesome! Thanks
Great!!!
Congratulations!!!
Thank you 😊
WOW man, this is a very extensive comparison! love it, just as good as the cable comparison. is there anything similar in the future?
Hey Amir. Thanks! Sure, there's gonna be more :)
Brick Of Sorrow. Thanks for the effort.
Increible video.Mil Gracias
thank you man
thanks for sharing
You could make an electronic track out of this noises :)
I'm very impressed by AMT and Yerasov units, and AMT price.
thank you!
If you haven't made a video yet comparing power supply bricks, I'd like to see one. As a beginner I'm confused as to which one to buy. Vodoo, 1 Spot or the cheaper ones in the $40 to $60 range. Thanks for the great video and all the hard work you put into making it.
Thanks a lot for your efforts man. So which one is the best?
Wowh! Rheostat + capacitor (Band-pass LC-filter) is a brilliant for noise detection.
Brick of sorrow! Thank you very much for this video, sorry if this a silly question , but if my adaptor which has 9v and 2a output is changed to one with 9v and 1a output , will the my pedals volume level coming out of it be less compared to using the 2a adaptor? Thanks again for this great video
Please do compare isolated power supply available on market
do a comparison between the powersupply, to do see which one has isolated ports
yes, please do this
Very good job as always. It would be very useful too to test complete power supplies with 9V and ...12V (for preamps like "le lead" for exemple).
Brick of sorrow, now I have to get one of those
Thanks Argenis!
Brick of sorrow!
Buzz detector, that's a geniality!
how about the godlyke power all??
I have a Palmer PW9V and my „Donner Mod Square“ is very loud when I plug other pedals on it.
I have a boss psa230s adapter, so can I used daisy chain to pedal up my 4 boss pedals? All pedals run on 9V
Great. I suggest a video test with guitar tuners. That would be great!
Well, HP42 made one a while ago. I'm not sure there's much I could add to that one.
@@MaxSoloMusic I checked some tuners with a tone generator that increases/decreases the Hertz in 0,1. The result is that the only one that recognizes such small increment in Hz is the Polytune Clip
Great idea! Well, maybe next time i'm in Thomann at TGU... will see
so I have a boss ds-1 but do not have a power cord what power cable would you recommend?
Brick of Sorrow ??
Euh... I wish you will test the power brick from Artec (SPB-8), from GatorCase and from...
...those which supply multiple 9v + 12/18v sockets...
Thanks
Next is what? Us vs uk voltage?
Do you have access to an oscilloscope? This way you are able to actually see the output and quantify the quality of the output.
As a matter of fact, I do! Old one but it's functional. I wish I had this idea before making this video
To be fair, the wall warts where too close to the powered circuits. Different power supplies will have varying shield casing, minimising emissions. This test is null and void as the wall warts should be at least 4 foot away from the powered devices. It's a shame, you are on to a solid test but there should of been distance from the wart to equipment. most of the noise you could hear is RF emissions you would not have picked up with distance from kit to wart. I mean the cable to the volt meter is right next to the wall wart and plastic load box. Pedals are made out of metal for a reason, good power supplies have a tin shroud too, this minimises RF transmission/reception. Try it yourselves at home, power your pedal and place the pedal next to the power wart, you will hear the noise level rise. I got excited when I found this video as yes power supply designs and quality vary greatly but this isn't a fair test with proximity to the power source. A for effort though
wow... really disturbing results. Noise levels are through the roof with all of them i feel. I currently use the fame DCT200 with isolated outputs. I would love to test that one under stress as well. Shame there seems no decent solution for my travelling board as yet but batteries for higher gain pedals. Very good video and you've got a new sub!
How about a brick power supply shootout (voodo labs, strymon, cyoks, trutone etc)
Too complex to execute all at once. But i'll be looking at some bricks one by one for sure
So which one is the least noisy?
wow. there are a lot of bricks of sorrow.
brick of sorrow..... can you the same with the multi isolated PS?
I'd love to! That is gonna take months of organizational work I believe
Did u ever experience an oscillating, heartbeat like throbbing sound on the amp when testing a multi effects? I tried several psu and several amps and the sound wont go away. I use a simple NUX MFX 10 and a shielded strat copy on noise shielded cables and the combo is dead quiet without the effects plugged in yet. On the wah pedal the psu's work fine. But not for the MFX 10.
Oscillating - yes, hartbeat-like sound - no. I'd try to eliminate parts of the signal (and power) chain one by one to find out where the problem is
No idea if anyone will respond but I got a JHS unicorn v2 pedal and plugged a 5v adapter form a portable dvd and wanna know if I didn’t just f the thing up 💀
Go nerds!
brick of sorrow ... could you give some advice for pedals Power supplies ... i've bought some ... and they are really noisy ... well they were cheap ... and i've been increasing the price ... but still havent found a quiet one ... i guess i'lle have to "Open my wallet" a bit more ... i've tried some ... if i had saved that money now i already had one "rich" one lol ... thanks from Portugal ...
Generally, linear power supplies have less noise than switching adapters. Linear once are usually bigger and heavier. Also, if you daisy chain pedals to one adapter, some pedals (often digital ones) create a lot of noise in the chain. The best solution would be an isolated linear power supply. But those may be very pricey. Take a look at Ciocks or AMT Fulcrum. Speaking of wall warts, unfortunately there's only a few that do the job well
well done. this looks very time consuming.
Hello, I need an adapter for rocktron Silverdragon guitar pedal. It is 13 volt AC with 1amp. Can you please get me one?
Where can i get the Buzz detector?
There's only one place - build it yourself. There's only a 100 Ohm rheostat inside, 150 watt, and a capacitor
@@MaxSoloMusic Can you provide an electrical scheme or more info about the components?
If the voltage is under 9 it's not bad?
It's not bad but may affect the sound of some analog pedals
Brick of Sorrow
brick of sorrow. I'm still confused with the Ibanez AC509 on how it is quiet. It is so damn noisy when I use it
What kind of noise are you getting? Is it more like a 60 cycle hum or something else like hiss and white noise? And what's the signal chain?
@@MaxSoloMusic It' s 60 cycle hum. The hum is still there when I play a note. I already replaced it with a snark adapter and turns out that fixed my problem. The hum was gone. My signal chain is Boss CS 3 Compressor > Ibanez TS9.
@@TheMrZomboss AC509 is not a linear adapter but switching one. It may cause some hiss or other noise but not 60 cycle hum is unlikely. It sounds like either lack of ground or a ground loop.
@@MaxSoloMusic I see, is the boss psa adapter a linear adapter? I find it to be quiet. I might buy a daisy chain cable once I acquire a wah pedal.
Brick of sorrow
But using them on digital pedals is a whole different story right right?
It all goes down to what kind of power filtering a pedal has. Digital pedals have some analog circuits too. Many modern analog pedals have efficient filtering and won't suffer from a noisy power supply
"now that you've seen what's inside, don't try this at home", its already open, and did you just say danger?
yerasov - рулит!
BRICK OF SORROW
But I have decided to buy me a „Palmer PWT08“
