- From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as BADLANDS, DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE THIN RED LINE, THE TREE OF LIFE is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

I remember walking out the cinema after seeing this and saying "wow that was something, really amazing", I turned to my brother who said "...What the fuck was that". Thats true art.
Not everyone is equally able to grasp the subtle beauty of Life.
And even those able to sense the nuances of life can't fully understand its purposes.. the unavoidable unknown is forcefully and graciously, humbling.

I was around 21 years old, my father and I smoked a big joint, went into the movie theatre and saw this film. It had a profound impact on both of us. My father died recently and I often come back to this film, relieved that we shared this experience.

You gotta be in the right mood to watch this movie. First time i stoped in the middle, next time I was like... wow
I had the same experience. I watched just a bit of it, stopped and was thankful I didn't pay to see it in the theater. But one part I did see mirrored my own childhood and it drew me back in. I now own the Blu-ray and watch it regularly as a husband and a father to boys.
This is like 2001: A space Odyssey. Everyone takes something different. I understood the beauty of this movie in the Third watch. This film will always be special. A true work of art translated into moving images.
I watched this movie when it first came out in theaters. I thought it was by far and a way the dumbest movie of all time. I was very annoyed with the lack of dialogue. But now watching this trailer, it looks like a super good movie. So now I'm wondering if I should give it another chance.

@@HAL--gb6uf funny you ask man. The first, idk maybe 30 min or so I loved it. And I was thinking what was I complaining about before? But then as it went on, it got too abstract. I started almost pulling my hair out. I tried to remain patient but I couldn’t. I was now wondering how the hell I made it through the movie in the theaters. I would recommend watching this movie but as soon as you start to get bored, just turn it off. It doesn’t get better.

Every year or two, I come across a film that so thoroughly enthralls me in such a fashion that I leave the theatre almost in a trance - rattled, shaken, and broken into speechlessness over its emotive power. Into The Wild, The Master, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Synecdoche, New York are a couple examples. This movie falls firmly into that category. Not every film requires a clear-cut explanation or definitive closure. And yet, if a film can impact you in such a powerful way, it deserves recognition - and this is one of qualifying films.

I come back and watch this trailer every few weeks whenever I feel like I've lost hope in humanity, due to all the horrible things going on in the world. It lifts my spirits and enriches my soul. I can't explain it, but it does. I only wish that everyone could see it as I do, and feel the resonance in your own heart and in your own being. Never has a movie moved me so much. Terrence Malick has created more than a masterpiece. No movie, in my opinion, will ever reach this bar. It is not possible.

There's a fine line between art and entertainment. Too much entertainment and you lose the deeper meaning - too much meaning and people lose interest. It's incredibly difficult to create a movie like this where you both care about the characters and their story and also change with them as their story blossoms. For me, it's not only that the movie itself is a triumph, it's also that it somehow completely recreates the same sense of tenderness and longing far after you've seen it, and regardless of how many times you've seen it.
This movie is a moving painting and a perfectly timed orchestral piece interwoven into the memories of a life lived.

@@HAL--gb6uf I think you make a good observation. For most people a movie is a story told visually in a linear sequence. When that linearity is gone ("TOL" being a good example) it completely throws people off. I can imagine some people in the theater muttering, "WTF?" during the scene with the dinosaurs. Then at the end the scene on the beach at dusk, w/ characters reassembled out of time. Even the dead young brother shows up. More confusion -- that was too much for some to accept. I don't have problems with any part of the movie -- partly because long ago I read Robert Venturi's book "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture." Also because practically all movies are made of thousands of individual shots pieced together.

This movie has different meanings to oneself as you watch it over the years as you experience new milestones in life. Especially into parenthood.

The love spoken about in this film is the Unconditional Love, the pure one, the one you give without any conditions or attachments to the loved part (people, things creatures..) it doesn't have to be dedicated to a specific person, or a lover as a condition. Love = gratitude = appréciation regardless of the situations and conditions that present itself. You ought to begin to love the pure person that is your own Self, from there all love flows, love everything around you even the sinners, love that life you're living with all its contrasts and challenges they are only there to heal you ( see how did the mother feel about the death of her child eventually... ).💙

This is my favorite film. My wife totally hates it.
It is full of symbolism, existential questions, ideologies of good and evil. All illustrated by arguably the most beautiful cinematic imagery ever created.

Most women live in the emotional realm, incapable of deep existential issues. Obviously not the kind of women that Malick portrays in his movies. Those kind of women can usually only be found in Orthodox Christian church’s.

This is the most life affirming movie ever made. Excellent actors, excellent operator, excellemt music/soundtrack. Watched it several times.
This is the best film in the history of American cinema. I really didn't think film-making could get better than Malick's The Thin Red Line, but TOF even more boldly explores the joy, pain, uncertainty, and ultimately the beauty of life that 99.9% of other directors are either unwilling or are numb to seriously exploring.

It might sound strange to say this, but I watched this film when it first came out and it was so profound and had such a huge emotional impact on me, that I'm actually scared to re-watch it, because I know I feel never be able to experience what I did back then a second time.

This is genuenly so relatable. I have the same exact feeling with the film Blue Bayou. I suppose it really does depend on the time in place you view a film and how it can emotionally impact you. Based simply upon the possibility of relating ceremoniously towards the time and stance you are in at the time.
that's a shame. i've seen this movie maybe 20-30 times, and every time is a different experience, and I find as I get older and go from the child to identifying with the mother and father figures, my own conceptions of spirituality that i truly could appreciate this movie.
Impossibly hard to describe, or define. I was at times both bored, and completely enthralled by this film when I saw it in the theater. Frustrated, amazed, confused, yet mesmerized. I thought about it many times over the days, weeks even to come. I had a hard time telling people what to think when planning on seeing it. This isn't a "movie", it is a work of cinematic art. That's the best I can do.
I would have expected nothing else from Malick, who admitted that you have to let the film wash over you. So very true.
When I first watched this film ... I was blown away at how perfect every scenery and script was created. This is a Priceless movie that no human alive should miss. I truly believe that there will never be another movie in history that could top the making of this film. Not one flaw from the beginning to it's ending. FIVE STAR GRAMMY! ... Hunter McCracken who played young Jack is amazing. He should definitely be nominated for an Oscar. That kid told the whole story of Jack's youth through expression and body language. Very gifted young man.

It makes sense (in my opinion). There are 2 paths in life (nature & grace, as she says). You see the big bang, (this is the part not related to "feelings"), you see star clusters, then millions of years of evolution, you see the dinosaurs, then one dinosaur has a momentary flash of compassion to the wounded one, you see evolution/facts, you see the asteroid ending life, and then life renewing. This is Brad Pitt with his son. Reality. Life is hard, you have to carve your path. Survival of the fittest. Evolution. Then you have the "feelings" part of the love of a mother. The compassion not based on evolution per say, but just because she is a good human being. Both qualities are passed onto their son, who wrestles always with feelings of needing to be strong (evolution), yet also having compassion (feelings). No one really knows what awaits us in the afterlife. But one day, they say, we will fall down and weep, and understand it all. All things. Every single time I watch this trailer, I get very emotional. I personally cannot describe the feeling of joy and love this movie gives me. Even the trailer has a profound impact today, and I've seen it over 50 times at least. My biggest regret about this film, is that it will not be experienced by people. They will either never watch it, or watch it and dismiss it after 20 minutes as a nutty mess. This shouldn't be called a movie. And it's on a higher plain than to be called Art. This is a work that should be revered and as absorbed as strongly as the Bible, if not more so. Evolution is not wrong. Religion is not wrong. They both can co-exist, and indeed, they are one.
This gives me goosebumps, a wonderful trailer for my favorite film. No other film has made me feel this way, it has had and still has a profound impact on me... It is sincere, you can see the feeling an love that is put into it. It feels like a memory and it is very dreamlike. Thank you Terrence Malick ♡
I remember seeing this in a cinema. It got so much bad publicity that the cinema initially removed it, only to restore it with a disclaimer. I love this movie and the soundtrack. Zbigniew Preisner - Lacrimosa is amazing.

This movie isn't the type to watch when you feel like entertaining yourself or on a weekly basis. Since this came out I've only watched this around 3 times, still, this movie depending on the circumstances, speaks to you and hits you harder than anything else. Truly a work of art. Might not be the best movie, but might be the most important.
I can rarely stand to watch any movie twice. This, however, is one that I can watch over and over and over again.

I didn't know what to expect when I saw this film, but I was absolutely blown away by it and couldn't stop thinking about it for months. I forgot about it for a time and then it came to mind recently. I remembered how powerful it was when I saw it and how it transcended space, time and reality. Now I'm watching this trailer and thinking about when I can watch the full movie again.

I remembered. Seven years ago, when I was 11, I was so excited of watching this. This trailer captivated me in A LOT OF WAYS, especially from its beauty. From then, I've really developed the love of moving pictures. This film made me wants to create films... :) What a masterpiece.

There are few films that leave you confused and not understanding the film and yet you enjoyed watching it. This is one of theme
Saw it twice when it came out, cried both times. At the second showing I went to, the girl behind me was giggling at some scenes, its not for everyone which is understanding. Its more art than movie.

I remembered wathcing this movie when I was 12/13 with my parents and people keep leaving their seats and getting out of the studio before the movie finished. I quite enjoyed the movie tho
When one of my friends did that and later trashed the film in an angry fit I had to wonder how deeply scarred he actually was.
I tell people all the time that this is a movie you can't watch on a recommendation. You sort of have to know what it is you're getting into before you watch the movie. This definitely isn't an easy movie to watch but it really is one of the most beautiful looking films I've seen in a long time. Loved it
