  • Who is the best fighter to start with as a beginner in the King of Fighters series? These are the characters that I personally find them simple enough to use and are my main picks whenever a new KOF game is released. However, that doesn't mean that mastering them will be equally simple.

    Kula was the character that taught me how to do KoF combos. I picked up Kensou because I liked the sound he makes when he does a CD in 14, and I grew to like the character to the point where he became my main. Maxima became the third character I learned how to use, and I'm surprised that he's not part of the list. Very small moveset, easy BnB combos, a fun command grab, and supers that are easy to execute and are very effective. Sure he's hard to use in high-level play, but I think he's great for beginners to learn.
    I'm glad you mentioned Sylvie as well. Despite her looks, she is fun and easy to play, and her combos do mad damage. Her main weakness though is her poor range, so getting in is what makes things difficult for her.

But according to his tricky logic, that put Robert and Iori in the list, maybe she deserved to be in just for the sake of coherence. I definitely would have put Kensou at # 1or 2 at the lowest, because of that backwards 421 dp motion. Defensively it's the easiest non-charge dp in the game. You can buffer it quickly without having to move forward or come out of block, which makes it so much easier to defend blockstrings in a game that already has fast jumps and hop jumps. It combos easily into his super motions. AND, his fb is punch while his dp is kick. So you NEVER get accidental dp when going for fb.

    Great video!
    Im also inclined to add the fact of how op Kim is in Both KoF 02 entries (OG and UM'), due to how his basic moves has barely few to no startup frames, with long active time. Pair that with the many options his specials give him and you have a High-to-god tier character.
    On the other hand, Andy entry on this list surprised me. Since Im more of an Old School KoF player, I always regarded him as a tricky character to play, mainly due to how one should know how to properly zone the oponents out while not having many safe on block options, added to the fact that his punishes/combos are very frame specific, especially when it comes to linking his desperate move (Chou reppa dan). However, since you emphasized his XIII onwards entries, I cant be the one to argue with that since I dont know much about those games competitive wise. ;)

    I feel like "easy for beginners" is very subjective personally. I've always had trouble with balanced characters and tend toward specialists so at least of couple of these picks are characters I found rather challenging starting out (King felt real weird, and I still can't play old Ralf) while characters like K9999, Vice and Billy called my name (Vice being the first I ever learned). Also I'm surprised to see K' didn't even make an honorable mention! Dude's got it all man!

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 Před 3 lety

      It's not as subjective as it seems, but the proper reasoning applied to make a list can be tricky. As this list indeed has some moments of flawed logic and a few other moments of apparent character bias. Like omitting some super obvious choices who are even veterans in the series.
      Now, K9999 is no way a beginner friendly char. The thing is, in this kind of lists it's implied that the char is picked to be actually "mained" and studied in order to be well used. It's not about picking a strong char just to cheese people less skilled than you (because using a bad K9999 can get you screwed against people just above the noob rank), therefore a subutilized char.
      King truly is a beginner friend char in the series. Billy, not as much... Only in the specific games where he is well done and strong, like most notably in 02. Vice i can kinda see her around there, but still not in "top 10 most beginner friendly", for the most part because she has a particular issue of being very uneffective just in beginner level, but becomes very nice above that point - but that will require learning her tricks. So Daimon is still above her among the easier grapplers. And K' isnt a beginner friendly char either.

    • @mechanicat1934
      @mechanicat1934 Před 3 lety

      @@carlosaugusto9821 I think you kind of made my point for me a bit when you had to define what beginner meant. There's the beginner character that will help with long term growth, but I feel those characters can be difficult to do well with to start out. A short term loss, long term gain sort of character. But if the player hasn't committed to a game yet, then that kind of character can lead to more early losses which will cause a loss of interest. In that case a beginner character is a short-term gains long term loss type of character that works as an advertisement. That kind of character is a good beginner character if we assume that by the time cheesy stuff stops working that the player is invested in the game to do the real work. This type works better for people new to fighting games I think. Of course there's characters that work well for people new to KOF (or a specific series) but not fighting games. Then we're talking about transferrable skills.
      Beyond all that though I tend to believe in the Heart/Body/Mind idea. Different players come into fighting games with different skills. The best beginner character is the one that plays to the skills and strengths the player already has. Then build the skills you don't as you get to higher levels.
      Also K' isn't beginner friendly? News to me. O=
