- Aoife Wilson had a ton of questions about Life is Strange Before the Storm, but luckily she got to talk to lead writer, Deck Nine's Zak Garriss, during E3, about Chloe Price and Rachel Amber, about Max and about the Life is Strange timeline. We've also uncovered a few new facts about Life is Strange Before the Storm gameplay, about which characters won't be returning, and what locations will feature in Life is Strange Before the Storm Episode 1.

Hands up if you feel personally victimised by the fact Max never replied to Chloe's letters.
Eurogamer max was having her own problems. She made a few demons in Seattle and I'm not exactly sure why she never replied but I think max had probably let chloe be after the loss of her father. Let me know if you agree or not.
Also, I see that these episodes are going to be bigger thank the 1st game which will be really cool because there's only 3 + a bonus episode with max

See, it is kinda shitty that Max didn't keep in touch, we all know that, but... you definitively said in the video (and I have heard the same elsewhere so I'm pretty confident in it) that Chloe never even sends any of those letters. How in the _hell_ can Max be blamed for not replying to letters she never received? I feel like you're mixing up a few things here, like literally 20 seconds after stating that the letters are all unsent you're all like "...and never getting a response, how could you Max?" I mean... what? That doesn't even make sense.
Listen again: "unanswered AND unsent." Some letters were sent, some were not, as Deck Nine themselves said in an archived stream on the Life is Strange channel.
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed playing as Chloe more than I did playing Max. The heartbreak of Chloe’s past and her sarcastic, angst-driven personality is so genuine and intriguing. You say that Before The Storm creates a spitting image of just how alone she felt, and I agree. In some ways, Chloe is more interesting, and she’s always been my favorite character. She has her flaws, but that’s what makes her so real, and I think both voice actors did an excellent job at displaying her personality.

I like playing as chloe, but her story was bad.
While I do prefer the dynamic of the original game a bit more, I really enjoyed _Before the Storm,_ and I had a lot of fun getting into Chloe's head in the game. It's a shame that a lot of people can't stand her. Even though I'm a 30-something dude, I could appreciate the struggle of the character, and she reminded me a lot of some of the people I knew back when I was a teenager.
If only kate was in it.. Seeing her before most things happened would've been so nice

They should of talked about Rachel's disappearance. I think that'd make the ending to 'before the storm' a lot more sadder.

my bet is this what they're planning. makes since they're probably seeing how successful this game will be and what the people will say about it. Before creating the events surrounded by the actually disappearances. At least that way if it flops 2/3 wont hurt them too badly financially

I absolutely loved playing as Chloe. I understand her attitude and way of thinking so much more now that I've felt her pain and the connection she made with Rachel before losing her. I loved Rachel and playing this game makes the original so much more emotional!!!

The crow/raven is a symbol of change, a bringer of death. Also associated with deception and mystery.
It most likely appears in this scene and on Chloe's T-shirt to foreshadow future events in the game.

the doe was Rachles spirit leading max to her body.
I believe that Max and Rachel have the same spirit animal, because when Rachel disappear from Chloe's life, Max literally came in. Also, Chloe's spirit animal might have changed, since William(her dad) died, she got kicked out from Blackwell, and her mom married step-duch(David) , might be the reason why her spirit animal is crow, and after she changed her hair color into blue, after Rachel disappeared and Max came, her spirit animal changed into a butterfly. And the reason why butterfly, is because that was the first time Max used her powers to save Chloe, aka create the Butterfly effect, which messed up time and space so bad( we know from the game). Also I believe that crow was either Nathan's or Jefferson's spirit animal. Which make sense, because Crow's are scavengers, they mostly feed on dead organisms, like deer or Doe!(Rachel), because Nathan druged her, and gave her to Jefferson who later killed her, so it might make sense. What do you think?

I actually think that Chloe has more of the blue jay symbolism seeing as how max has multiple options to rescue/save a blue jay from death just as she is constantly saving chloe from dying throughout the game
I had no idea that they were going to use letters in place of keeping a diary. But I'm totally going to replicate the letters since I made a replica of Max's diary!

I wasn't sure about this initially because DONTNOD aren't involved in this but I'm definitely impressed by how thoughtfully-handled "Before the Storm" seems to be. Playing LiS and getting immersed in its story and characters got me through a really uncomfortable heatwave and all that's gone on still feels fresh in my mind so I hope this serves a great purpose to a story that was already very interesting. :)

Uhhh i don't think the timeline will fit. Since Rachel have been dead for 6 months or so before LiS start.
There’s a theory that Rachel had powers related to all the elements which was why the storm happened after she died. No one was there to ‘watch over’ Mother Nature anymore. And because Rachel was so powerful, she gave Max the power to change someone’s fate > Chloe.
I'm in love with Max, I just wish I could meet somebody like her in the real world. I just perfectly fits my style.

The doe symbolism represents a protector. There are 3 people who are represented by the doe, all of which are protectors of Chloe. Max, Rachel and William all have doe iconography linked to them in the narrative.

It will definitely change the game, the way you play it and the way it will feel, but I don't think it will take away from it. There are plenty of choice-based games and they weren't ruined by the fact that they didn't have the rewind mechanic (no, they were ruined by the fact that Telltale can't be bothered to make a good game instead of shameless cashgrabs with zero effort), if the story is good and the characters are intriguing then that's all that matters.
Also, there's this little tidbit from the features on steam: "‘Backtalk’ - A risk/reward conversation mode that allows Chloe to use her barbed tongue to provoke or get her way"
I honestly think a more high-stakes feeling and maybe sometimes getting stuck with a bad outcome (and being mad about it) is a lot more fitting for Chloe as a playable character. As long as it's well implemented I'm actually looking forward to it.

9one yeah. It sucks that the one that he loved apparently thought that he was a loser and a liar and was being used for his stash. It’s weird how quickly that turned around when he unintentionally causes the death of Rachel Amber.
I am soo fucking excited for this game. I don't even mind the new voice actor for Chloe, I really feel like Deck Nine are fans and love the characters too and will be true to the LIS world.
I actually prefer the BtS voice actor for Chloe then in the original. I think the deeper, more monotone voice fits her personality at the time being still depressed by her father's passing and her still being more introverted and shy.
I love her deadpan delivery.
I honestly wish Deck Nine could take over the LiS franchise, the game just feels smoother and the dialogue's more natural. I mean, they hired Daughter to write original music that 100% fit the characters & moment as opposed to just buying the license for songs (BGMs aside). It shows their dedication to fleshing out the lore unlike Dontnod that left us with several unanswered questions by the end of LiS because they were in it for the shock factor.

the doe is Rachel because it always comes up at mention of her and it watches as max and Chloe uncover Rachel's body. it also shows up in the tornado, which theories say Rachel started.
I always believe Rachel had some power. No matter how much it’s denied. Bc the way she screamed while the tree caught fire. So I do believe that Rachel could’ve started that tornado

What I love about before the storm is that not only does it flesh out choes character a bit more, but it also makes the first game a lot more heart breaking, Because we did not really know who rachel was on the first game, She was just a face and we really did not have any feelings or opinions of our own about her, With before the storm we got to develop a connection with her and feelings about her in very much the same way Choe did, It makes playing the first life is strange more emotionally painful because of what happens to her and gives you a greater ability to empathize and understand chloe commitment to finding her.
I loved watching the eurogamer playthrough. Watching them and watching the game was so beautiful. Johnny early on saying that he wasn't sure at first but that they know what they're doing, and seeing Aiofe's reaction to Johnny crying was adorable.

During the time of "Before the storm" it was 2012/2009 not sure, and obviously it bothered me but it made me glad.
It's really clever how they made Chloe drop out in her Sophomore year, since "Sophomore" means "wise idiot." Chloe is stuck at this level of maturity and knowledge, more or less, and it explains her lack of [much] change from Before the Storm to Life is Strange

I cannot wait. I pray that after 'Before The Storm', they continue on with the story for Season 1. Like add on to the story after the ending of Max and Chloe leaving Arcadia Bay maybe being able to figure out a way to save the town. This game is a masterpiece.
I watched this playthrough long before i actually played it. It put me to tears back then, it put me to tears when i finally played it. Such a beautiful fucking game.
There were some things i managed to do differently than Johnny and Aiofe. I managed to save Rachel's mother, and encouraged Nathan, and that got him to fully commit to his role in the play, which was heartwarming, despite Nathan being a psychopath, it was nice to see him have a moment of joy and decency.
She actually is writing a diary, she tried writing a letter to max, but couldn't get herself to send it. So she decided to write letter-like diary entrances.

Max could be in depression, closing herself from anyone. It happened to me, when all my friends moved away. I couldnt speak with them, even when they tried to contact me.
@@muzdravmachaka3647 I agree. Max isn't all bad, moving away from your best friend would really leave you feeling like crap. She may not know what to say or how to talk to Chloe. Plus, she acknowledged the fact that she messed up by not replying to Chloe's letters. :(

i just thought: what is Rachel had powers too? and maybe she killed herself because she didn't think she could handle it but her soul did rewind time and put her body underground so people didn't know she killed herself and Chloe wouldn't think she wasn't a good enough of a friend. BtS really has it out for Max. I know the original game clearly said Max was bad at keeping in touch, but jeez. They make her out to be the worst. It'd be one thing if she just didn't contact Chloe, but Max flat out ignores her when she tries to text. Even disappearing mid-conversation the first couple times. That little bit instantly makes me dislike Max a bit, because I've had friends do that to me, and it sucks. I can't imagine how much worse it'd be with William's death on top of that.
In the first game I gave Max the benefit of doubt since it wasn't her decision to move. Plus I have horrible social anxiety, and am awkward as hell, so I know how hard it can be to message someone first, especially if they're going through something and you don't know what to say. BtS though, shows that she actively ignored Chloe. It would take seconds to reply. Even if she was busy, a late reply is better than no reply at all. Max just seems like a major dick now.

Playing this is actually going to make me really think about things so much more. Not being able to rewind possible mistakes was one thing but knowing what is right or wrong is more subjective than ever now. Doing bad things might be the better choice when it comes to Chloe..whereas in other choice games its a bit too easy to be the good person and get the good ending. Like in Bioshock for example. It's obviously a good thing to save the little sisters and it's obviously the wrong thing to harvest them.

Rachels spirit animal is the blue bird in life is strange so I think her spirit animal was different in before the storm (the black bird) and that her spirit animal changed because she met chloe

Anyone know how many endings this game is going to have? Some people have been saying two? One that leads into the events of the S1 game and another that suggests a different timeline, but I haven't seen anything confirmed for this.
I predict that Chloe will find a truck in the junk yard and will have to go on a little quest to fix it up.
The doe is Max, the butterfly is Chloe, we can assume that this is true because during Chloe's funeral in the first game, the butterfly lands on her coffin. The blue jay is Rachel (in the first game). It lands on Chloe's window, however, I believe that in BTS, the raven is Rachel because Rachel mentions things that Chloe did when she (Rachel) wasn't even present to see them, but the crow was.
Even though I ended up really disliking the end product of the game, I can see how much passion the team put into it. and I have nothing but respect and praise for that. ♥️
And now the painful 8 weeks to episode 2 wait begins! :D
