In the late 70's early 80's, each village had a police house (if anyone remembers them), the local officer would do talks at the school about road safety etc. He always had rovers, including later an SD1. This was in Nottinghamshire. Might be worth keeping in mind, the London based forces would order specials, built specifically for the police. I didn't see any like that up here.

I like your comment regarding cars worth saving. Here in the UK, most of the TV classic car shows are about making money from cars, which I think is a shame and gives the wrong message. People should restore cars because they like the car, and get some satisfaction from its restoration. I tend to like small family cars, and appreciate that when I see one restored and gleaming at a show, the owner has done so simply because of the affection they have for the car.

I was thrilled to see the Mark I Corina Estate Wagon. I owned one of the last Mark I Estate Wagons which was actually titled as a 1967 model. Previous to the Cortina I had a 1958 Triumph TR-10 (Standard 10 in the UK) which my father purchased new while stationed in England. Once a week the local car dealers lined up in front of the PX making certain everyone knew they could order cars with left hand drive. Over many years the TR-10 was titled to my father, then older brother, sister, myself and then back to my brother.

    Hi Tom!
We met at "Greenfield Village" last year...and I wish I knew you liked Mark One Cortinas, as I used to have 4 of them many moons ago. When Ford started producing the Pinto (yuck!) they ordered all the Mercury dealers (which had all the Cortina parts) to ship everything back to England ...thus ending our parts supply.
I started selling off my Cortinas when major things started going bad, with the last straw being a Lucas starter, from England, for $110 + shipping, in 1972.
Of all the 80+cars I've owned in my life...the Cortinas are the ones I really miss.
    Hope to see you again,
    Thank You!

Back in the day you find lot's of these Pommy (English) cars here in Aussieland, but most would have been crushed by now, shame in some ways, but most were very unreliable. Aussieland used to produce their own cars as well, but it is rare to see a 60's or 70's Aussie car now. My first Aussie car was a 1975 XB Ford Falcon 351C, and as a young bloke got caught speeding so many times, used to smoke the tires real well LOL

@@adambrinkley4014 Yeah your right to a point. Holden being GM used many parts as in engines/trans, although they did have cars that might have been based on a model from with in the GM family, many of their cars are not found elsewhere, generally if they were a somewhat of a clone they were always smaller, same goes for Ford or Valiant (Chrysler). I am not defending Aussieland cars as I am not an Aussielander, just reside here, but the last series Falcons and Commodore and some other models were not based on USA based models/shapes, sure they name was, but that's it. But they did built their Aussieland cars in Aussieland for the most part, sure tooling for engines were based on USA engine design and so on early on, but there were cars designed and built here that were primarily Aussieland. I have been to the main Ford plant in my state before they closed Ford like they did with Holden, and the last few Falcon models were not based shape wise on something in the USA, just the badge/name. Like I said before I am not an Aussielander (green card holder from way back) but felt sad when the 2 main car manufactures seized to exist, Ford still operates here but imports everything 100%, Holden is gone, I grew up here and was and still am a Ford bloke, always gladly street raced against anything GM, way back in the 80's (showing my age) before anything internet or social media, we as teenagers used to hit the streets on the weekends with our cars, sadly most of that is now replaced with a PlayStation, although there is still some street scene around but most cars are imports, it is rare to see an old Aussieland model car these days,

Crazy stuff...first car I ever owned back as kid in Glasgow, Scotland....Navy blue Ford Cortina estate car/wagon (NA)....been owned by Max Factor the cosmetic company, used as a sales reps car. Less than a year of ownership, the gas tank leaked...It was replaced by a Mini 1000...a truly remarkable car, then for unknown reasons traded it off for a Morris Minor 1000...your Grand dads car....although it was near pristine, it was not cool to own such a beast unless it was made into a race car look a like...especially when you were 17....Then the opening of this piece saw you drive in with a Pacer wagon...Left Scotland in 1978 for Canada...by the early 80's, I had that exact car....Red, wood trim...identical car.....but, the challenge of owning such a car, stuck at the side of the road more than once was too much....Cortinas...an iconic car, that never seems to fade away..what a collection that man has.

You would have to go retork the head bolts from time to time. If you wanted to go faster and a little more power there was a head gasket that could be use. My dad loved that car. Just so you know…
The YT auto-captions robot mis-hears ‘Barn Find Hunter’ and instead writes it as ‘Boyfriend Hunter’.

That depends on where you lived in the market they were released into. The pommy terms are just that, and may or may not have been used in other markets.

Herald,,, a Standard 8 engine with twin carbs.
    Cortina,, a Anglebox engine
Twin sump in std form,, very fragile and very expensive to repair
Cortina GT wagon?? To me either a myth or somebody built their own.
