  • California wildfires are producing a huge amount of smoke all over the state. We are going to build a DIY smoke filter, I have been making these and showing people how to make them for over decade. They work. Lets Make!
    These are not the same brands that are on the video. I bought mine locally, these are equivalent.

    I just built this two days ago (August 2020, lighting complex fires) and it works AMAZING. Thank you, brother. God bless you.

    Nice job. I used painter’s tape for easy removal.

    When I cook a steak on my induction hot plate it creates a load of smoke. Will this work to stop the smoke in the air setting off my alarm and choking up the air in my apartment? Thanks.

    Will the resistance from the filter not be a fire hazard for the fan shorting?

    Will the filtered smoke still generate heat?

    My upstairs neighbor smokes and it seeps into my apartment. The second hand smoke gives me terrible headaches. Do you think this would help me?

      I am having the same exact problem with my neighbors. I am going to give this a shot. 🤞

      @@Chris_WGI tried this and it has made a big difference for me. I don't have nearly as many headaches and when I walk into my apartment I'm not smacked in the face with ashtray smell anymore either. I use the homemade one in my living room and a small water based air cleaner on top of my stove, because once I got the living room air filtering, it helped me discover the kitchen vent was a second big problem area. The homemade one has been running 2 weeks and the filters already turning yellow, so I know it's filtering quite a lot of smoke. Good luck and I hope you get relief too.

      @@dj_alboe1360 WOAH! Thanks so much for the response and such a positive one it is! Gives me hope.. I was ordering things tonight on Amazon that I needed, but was unsure still. I have to deal with smokers OUTSIDE my window ... and I just want to blow in nice fresh air when it's hot ya know? I have to run my A/C unit always now which is so expensive. I hope it works for me too. Which filters did you end up using with which fan? Any help you can provide would rock - someone said you need a carbon filter too for smell, but i dont know. Btw I am an ex DJ from the mid to late 80's , but nothing professional. Still have all of my records! hehe Cheers and thank you for the response. SO glad it worked for you. 👍

      @@Chris_WG I bought a 20x20, 1 inch furnace filter with a MERV rating of 9. I bought mine at home depot and the front of the filter package listed what kinds of things it filters. 9 and higher listed smoke, so you shouldn't go lower than 9. I don't know about carbon filters, but since I don't get smacked in the face with ashtray smell when I walk in my house any more, the set up I have now must be working on the smell too. As far as the fan, I just bought a regular box fan from walmart and I run it on the highest setting. The 1 thing I did different from the person in the video, is I taped my filter to the front of the fan. The fan motor is in back and I didn't know if the filter would interfere with the efficiency and/or longevity of the motor. I have neighbors who smoke outside also but my main problem is my upstairs neighbor so I just have my filter sitting on a TV tray in my living room. I can't say whether it would work in the window or not.

      @@dj_alboe1360 I will give it a shot in the window and see if it helps, maybe I can help others who have similar situations. But you really helped me Alboe. Apartment living I have done my whole live after my parents house after 20 years old. I look forward to owning a home one day... but that doesn't sound easy either. I read a bunch of things online and watching youtube videos that the filter should be pointed forward towards the back of the fan. Now, a few have said the motor will burn out of the fan, but i have yet to see anyone saying that happens. The back is key I think, but both would work I guess right? Thanks so much for your update buddy. Means a lot. I just need fresh air in from outside and need to filter their dang cigarette smoke. I dont mind people smoking, but they are out there because they dont want smoke in THEIR apartments... but are ok with it in mine... such is life. haha STay safe with this Corona my friend. I'm Chris_WG_ on twitter say hi if you want mate! 👍

      Another reason it goes on the back, is that it keeps the fan blades and grating cleaner that way.

      Sashazur awwww thats smart! my cord is rightbin the middle of the back🤦‍♂️ o well it works in the front too thanks

    • @Sashazur
      @Sashazur Před 3 lety

      luce_4 My fan also had the cord coming out of the middle of the back, I just smushed the filter over it - the filters are flexible and it’s not going to affect how they work.

      Don't forget to get the right rating of filter and put it on the right direction. it is very simple, but without those two things it will not work as expected.
