  • My take on making homemade gel hand sanitizer gel to kill virus.
    I took some inspiration from here: • How to make Alcohol Ge...
    The ingredients are:
    20ml Sodium polyacrylate
    800ml Water (boil down to less than 250ml)
    550 ml or more Ethanol
    20 ml Glycerol or Propylene glycol
    PH of the water is pretty important.
    Carbopol powder would be better, in which case you don't need to break it down and you can start with the final amount of water.

    This was a good tutorial, thanks. I purchased sodium polyacrylate from Amazon, only about $5.50, and will give this a try. I note that a lot of people are using Aloe Gel, however, at one point there was absolutely no Aloe Gel on the shelves, so I am experimenting with different things. I made some sanitizer today, my first try =) using 2/3 alcohol and 1/3 polypropylen glycol food grade base, along with about 2 tbsps of glycerin and about 10 drops of lavender, and it turned out great! The only thing that would make it better is to make it as a gel when I added a bit to a gel I had on hand it blended very well. This is all kind of fun, in a crazy, mixed up and panicked way. Reminds me of when I was a kid with a chemistry set.

    Denaturized alcohol in some places is methanol, wich is toxic. Better stay safe and use ethanol or isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) wich you can get 99.9% pure easily.

      Denatured ethanol has methanol and isopropyl as the denaturing agents.

    Wow, that's a LOT of work and mess just to get a gel. Non-gel liquids work exactly the same with almost zero effort. Pour 100 ml of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 2 to 3 ml glycerin into a small spray bottle and shake. Done. And no polymer residue left behind.

      That is correct, but not really the point of the video.

      A polymer gelling agent is used for an emollient so that it spreads evenly over your skin. You can also use Xanthan gum from your local grocery store as a gelling agent if you can't source a polymer.

  • @BWhatEverTV
    @BWhatEverTV Před 4 lety +2

    A polymer for hand sanitizer is a dumb idea and more work than is necessary. Use Xanthan gum powder which is a food thickener. And you don't have to use heat.

    Seems like a hell of a lot of stuff to go through instead of just mixing glycerin or aloe gel and isopropyl alcohol or spirits. But I guess a lot of people has time on there hands nowadays

    Appreciate the effort, but you have to respect a polymer’s natural characteristics. If you try and force it, it will behave badly and do the opposite of your desires.

    You need more alcohol in your solution ... which is why your hands still feel wet ... need at least 70% alcohol for it to be effective

    Is there any problem with using 1 part pure aloe vera gel and 2 parts 100% isopropyl alcohol? Wouldn't that be preferrable?

    • @EcProjects
      @EcProjects  Před 4 lety +1

      With aloe vera, it's a really thin gel. Nothing wrong with that either. :)
      I just show one option, not claiming it's the only one :)

    • @daweitowalk
      @daweitowalk Před 4 lety

      EcProjects the title seems to imply your option is “proper” unlike with “aloe vera!” with an exclaimatiom mark.

    • @EcProjects
      @EcProjects  Před 4 lety +2

      Proper gel, yes.
      In my opinion, the aloe vera mix should not be called a gel. And in that way, I think this version is better, yes.
      The aloe vera version still works, nothing against that, it's just thin. You are welcome to disagree.

    • @daweitowalk
      @daweitowalk Před 4 lety

      EcProjects Actually, I agree. But I wonder if it is a case of “either this or that”. Wouldn’t it be possible to thicken aloe vera and alcohol mix using glycerine powder to achieve even better result? After all, there are commercial Aloe Vera hand sanitizers out there that are thick enough to be called gels.
