    Not the networking I was expecting but I'll watch anyway.

    I felt scummy about “networking” until a friend told me to frame it as “building relationships” and “investing in your community” and although those phrases themselves could probably be used by some people as really hollow euphemisms, it helped me re-frame how I approach a room full of peers.
    If anyone wants another GDC lecture on this subject, the guy who made Antichamber did a talk about his game (it’s like “how to have an overnight success in eight years”) where he covers part of the talk on the subject.
    I think his argument was not to pass your card out to everybody (in a sense) but finding people who are crazy in the same way you’re crazy and focusing your social work on them

      Why in the world would you feel scummy about it?

    • @AmericasComic

      John Muscarella I dunno, like it feels like gladhanding and opportunistic and I’d conflate people being “fake” and when people would network in bad faith as being networking as a whole.
      It’s more of a reflection of my own insecurities than the realities of what networking is

    Talk-naming Etiquette for Modern GDC Talk Presenters

    Just something I want to ask, what about thanking the people you network with? Say you were at an event talking to someone when you exchange information and go on your way (weather you show your work or not?. Is common to reach out the person to thank them for their time or will that come off as annoying?

    • @TonsOfHunStudios
      @TonsOfHunStudios Před 4 lety +2

      I think it's fine to include it in the follow up message. For example if I met someone in person and the day after I send them a connection request on Linkedin, I might say "Hey ____, it was great speaking with you at the event. Hoping we can continue the conversation."

    You can tell that, when the title is weird, the talk is gonna be a rant of some kind, sometimes to push an agenda, sometimes not.
    When you type "networking" and "games industry" in the same title, you mislead people into thinking it's... you know. Networking.
    This is SOCIAL networking. In this context, it's important to specify that.

    • @TonsOfHunStudios
      @TonsOfHunStudios Před 4 lety +2

      I also didn't expect this to be the talk based on the title, but I still enjoyed it. I think we should blame the english language for having vastly different double meaning words :D

    • @BrunoCaramMuller
      @BrunoCaramMuller Před 4 lety +11

      It says “etiquette” and “for the professional” in the title, seems decently clear to me.

  • @TheDuckCow

    I legitimately got to the 15:00 mark before I realized that no, this was not just an elaborate an analogy about computer networking (though, maybe there's something to be said there?). All that being said, useful reminders and nice idea of the pacman rule!

    I hate when people use the term "networking" to decribe social ties. I came to listen to this video for networking in game development.
