Presented by the National Safety Council, "Winter Driving" dates to the late 1950s or early 1960s and presents tips on winter driving techniques. At 1:27 a NSC proving ground to study the problems of winter driving is shown. At 1:40 reports and manuals available for drivers are shown. At 2:00 a car is winterized with anti-freeze and at 2:45 snow tires are installed. At 3:45 a car is freed from ice and snow and the rear window cleared, and a seat belt is put on. The rest of the film covers snow and ice conditions. At 5:30, snow chains are installed. At 7:06 the film discusses glare ice, packed snow and other braking conditions. At 8:20 a driver's POV shows how a car's steering wheel makes no difference on ice. At 9:43 main street is shown in the winter with various hazards including trucks and ice. At 10:00, a car skids into a snow bank. At 10:13 the process of pumping the brakes is shown. At 12:13 various braking distances are compared. At 12:30 the film repeats its lessons for the viewer.

Any car today can go easily over 100k with just basic maintenance. I just watched a video of a guy who put over million miles on his 2007 Nissan with the original engine and transmission.
Anyone who can drive a rear wheel drive car in the winter without losing control is a good driver in my book. Half the people today can't even change a spare tire themselves. So sad.

Most cars dont even have a spare tire any more. You get a can of fix a flat on the cheep cars.
I live where it don’t snow much at all, but I drive my 2wd an rwd f150 when it snowed last I didn’t lose control. It’s like this video says be slow an easy and have good tires.

Personally, I drive a 5 speed manual with fwd, you get a lot more control with one of those, even though i live in Alberta and the snow right now is about 1 feet high on the roads and about 3 feet when shoveled

ive owned and drove the 'old stuff', ie 60's-70's and the new. i adore them all.
Mopars are still kick ass cruisers.
Daimler almost killed Chrysler forever, Fiat is doing a fab job keeping it going.
RAM's are a huge success, for one.
3.6L V6 & Hemi V8's, all fantastic.
My parents had a 1974 Dodge Dart, which was the one mom drove. She was scared to death about driving in the ice and snow. That car fishtailed like crazy in slippery conditions, especially on hills. And the cars in this film had even larger rear ends….it must have been a real challenge in those days.

so much more care went into the design of these cars. there are details in there that the designers put into the design that people don't even realize.

Driving HUGE old cars on ice looks like a slow motion blast!!!
I had a 1964 Oldsmobile Super-88 and that was the most dangerous car I ever driven in my life back in those days.It had full-time power steering.This means no linkage to the front end,it was all hydraulic from the firewall to the front rack and pinion and you could not feel the steering wheel at all,it was just like there is nothing connected to the front end whatsoever. This was on dry pavement,in winter time it was ten times worse,you had to anticipate where that front end was going before you got there,after a while you could do this,but it took a lot of practice to get used to that full-time power steering.
Everybody could do do-nuts without trying.
It was, indeed! best analogy to it, get an older ..80's-90's..pickup, add a couple hundred lbs over the right rear wheel in snowy conditions and..you'll be experiencing a fair share of how fun it was!
i cherished driving my Satellite, Newport, Fury ..even the 80's rwd beasts etc in the worst of conditions..the most LiT fun you can have on the road.
too bad about road salt/chemical mixes, spoiling the fun, causing corrosion, not really helping conditions..drawing deer onto the roads and poisoning them..enviro dmg, etc.

Chrysler was using push button automatic on the driver side of the dashboard from the mid 1950s to mid 1960s. Ford had the mechanical pushbuttons for the automatic transmission in the center of the steering wheel for the 1958 and 1959 Edsel !!
I loved the studded snow tires on my 1967 Galaxie 500. I could drive through 12" of fresh snow or on the icy packed stuff.
Skid testing reduces skid marks, and reduced skid marks means less laundry.
Tire technology, disc brakes (anti lock brakes) traction control and front wheel drive are all game changers. But I am just old enough to remember those snow tires.
Traction control and Front wheel drive have done me more bad than good. But these new brakes I just got are insane.
I still see many village idiots from the city skidding off the road, stuck, blocking traffic. The only time I am stuck is when the road is closed. My 2019 Subaru with winter tires gets me there safe.
Some of this stuff really takes me back--check the water level in your battery (I haven't done that in decades), winterize your car by putting antifreeze in the radiator (not just plain old water), get the snow tires out (I get by fine with all-seasons now). I never used chains and I remember seeing cars driving by that had loose chains, they used to bang around in the wheel well. They didn't mention in the video that it helped to have someone heavy in the back seat for extra traction.
@Mark P I still see people using them now. I should say I hear people using them. When I'm out for a walk and I hear a car with studded tires drive by grinding up the dry asphalt, I cringe.
In Finland a winter driving course is a part of you being able to get your drivers license, they should teach these things everywhere.....

I remember my dad putting the snow chains on our ‘65 Chevrolet in the pouring snow.
They forgot to mention that wearing argyle socks with brown shoes will help tremendously when driving on ice.
Those fancy shoes and sox wont do you much when you ditch the car and end upto your nuts in snow!!!

growing up in Michigan this all looks familiar. my dad would change to snow tires after the first snow. we never used chains. if you didn't install them right, they would tear up your fender wells. studded snow tires came out and made driving on ice and snow much easier.
My Dad told me he remembers him and my Grandpa pulling out the studs in the tires sometime in the 70's as Minnesota banned them. I dont understand why the roads are junk and have to be resealed every year or two anyway around here. I would take the added security and traction of studded tires vs a small amount of road wear.
@@ricochetey They outlawed studded snow tires in Michigan too. It was because the studs were wearing out the roads leaving grooves in the tire tracks. In turn the grooves would fill with water and freeze causing a real problem.
We never used chains in Detroit because they salted the roads, but I also had family that lived in Northern Michigan and they never used chains either - you just got used to driving in snow because we used to get so much of it back then. It was 53 degrees in Detroit today and it's January 2nd. The times they are a changin'.

during the winter months i always buy another set of tires and put the chains on them and keep them in the trunk and when i,m up in the mountains and driving in snow i put the other tires on and i,m good to go ,i even had a CHP ( California Highway Patrol ) officer pull up behind me and saw what i done and told me that was a real original idea.
You are doing it the hard way.
Just put the chains on when you need them, it’s a lot easier than jacking up the car on each side and changing the tires.

I grew up with the cars shown. They all had one common characterisic... bad brakes. Some of the Chrysler products with Lockheed brakes n the '50s were downright suicidal. Today's cars are infinitely better in.braking performance than these finned boats. The change toward better brakes started in 1963 with the first four piston Bendix disc brakes on the '63 Studebaker Avanti. Ford followed with the same brake in 1966. GM followed with their Moraine dual piston units in 1969.
While braking systems have greatly improved over the years, driving skill and, even more important, common sense still apply in bad weather driving. No vehicle, no matter how it's equipped, can be made idiot proof.
I rarely use the brake in snowy driving. Much better to take the foot off the accelerator and let the weight of the vehicle and gearing slow you down :)

Many cars had cable operated brakes, power brakes were an option in the forties and early fifties some cheap compact cars had cable brakes up into the late 60s, most notable the beetle has cable operated drum brakes
Fords and Chrysler (Rootes) in the UK had discs front and in some cars at the rear such as 1966 to 1971 mk4 Zephyr and Zodiac much earlier than US cars. These brakes were by Girling which has been rebranded as TRW.

3:57 Opening the rear window a crack is no longer necessary because all U.S. market cars since 1971 are required to have continuous forced ventilation with one-way exhausting vents in the rear of the car. Some 1971 cars, like the VW Beetle and Cadillac Fleetwood had visible vents on the outside, though such vents are usually hidden in the wheel housings now. Before 1971, it each automaker had its own approach to ventilation and even some early models with air conditioning needed the window opened a crack to keep the air moving.

I am from a country with snow from Oct thru Apr. I hereby totally confirm the content of this film relevant.
Iwant Anaivanovic when I was growing up it was snow from November to late March. My father even convinced me to wait until winter was almost over before I got my license and the first time it snowed, he came and picked me up so I wouldn’t drive home in the snow. Now it’s February and we’ve had 5” all season. I won’t be long before I could drive my camaro all year around on its summer tires. Just keep my Jeep for off-roading only.

I still wonder why people insist on driving at least 50mph on an icy interstate in 2020, when, in 1965 we only drove 25mph on that same stretch of interstate highway. Laws of physics haven't changed.
Right?? I own a 2011 Crown Vic and in the winter with snow packed on the roads I go about 30-35 on the highway. And I’ll have douchbags behind me, tailgate me or hit their flashers on me thinking I’m going to pull over. Sorry it’s your fault you decided not to leave a extra 30 min - 1hr for work. Best thing iv witnessed is a idiot in a 2019 Silverado ended up getting impatient and passed me going 55 on bad road conditions, as he was attempting to merge over he lost control and go thrown into a ditch and got stuck.
Tyler Allen years ago I was driving home from college in my old Buick and it had snowed 6”. They plowed the highway but only one lane. The plowed lane was icy so I drove on the snow covered part as traction was better. I’m puttering along and a Dodge Ram was flying up behind me and was trying to pass me. I just kept my steady speed and paid no attention. He then tried to pass me in the plowed lane. I saw his headlights out the corner of my eye and then they were gone. He didn’t pass me and there was no exits. I glanced behind me and saw that he had spun out and hit the median. Just because you have 4wd or AWD doesn’t mean you can drive like a nut in poor conditions. You have a little better traction but good winter driving habits still apply.
Tyler Allen a few years back I was driving my CRX in a bunch of freshly fallen snow as it was still snowing on a rural freeway in Northern Arizona. I was going slow as traction and visibility were both bad. A lady in a Mercedes kept tailgating me and flashing her lights. She managed to get around me, and I passed her about a mile later stuck in deep snow on the side of the road. Couldn’t help but laugh.
Have studded snow tires on steel wheels for my Crown Vic. After end of bad weather scub clean, Armorall, put each in a plastic leaf bag & tape shut them label. Then put on tire rack in basement till needed again.
Hell, when the snow starts flying, I just stay off the interstate. People are too stupid. I take the back roads the weatherman tells you to stay off of. A lot less idiots on the back roads when there's 10 inches of snow on them!👍

In certain provinces of Canada it’s law or a ticket is issued for not having snow tires I have my sons put them on every winter in Michigan
Would like to add: the accumulated snow should be brushed off the roof because it will end up blocking your vision down the road as it slides off, or you might end up with a fine.
In New York, it's illegal to have snow on your roof. I don't know how many other states have that law.

One thing i notice missing from alot of "winter driving" films is the fact no one explains how to use the throttle to get yourself thru a turn. It wont work on todays front drive/awd shitboxes, but in the big rear drive cars or pickups it works well and has saved my ass a few times
I dont know if you have ever driven fwd but if driven properly, you can somewhat save it with throttle. But yea, good point otherwise
@ because you dont know how to drive. Ive had to use throttle traveling at 10mph to get thru a turn. Ive spent many michigan winters driving RWD cars and 2wd pickups. Only been in a ditch 1 time, and that was in a 4wd expedition being stupid.

I wanted to give a shoutout to ABS and front-wheel drive.
I have driven thousands of winter miles on Canadian roads. I now drive a fifteen-year old KIA mini-van. It has front-wheel drive, ABS and modern all-season tires. A huge and calming differences between driving now and decades ago is that even in icy conditions, when I hit the brakes the ABS kicks in and even if I skid I still face in the direction I was formerly travelling. If things are icy enough I might slide to far and even leave the roadway. BUT it is ever so much nicer to not worry about my backend flipping around.
In real life, in the situation where the car is trying to punch through a foot high wall around its parking space it would likely to end up with the front end high-sided on the snow while the rear wheels spin uselessly. A snow shovel is the most important thing to carry when travelling in snow country.
Tire chains? Generally if the roads are bad enough that snow tires aren't enough, then you probably should have stayed home and waited a few more hours until the snow plows to clear the roads.
Today i park my in my heated garage and have 4 wheel drive. Drivers back then had to be super skilled

Never was able to put on A set of chains that fast!
One time the snow was up near the doors of the car. I even rocked it back and forth to get out of the parking spot.
When I was first driving, after the first snow (ice conditions) I'd find a large, open parking lot and practice controlling skidding so as the car suffered ware I would be prepared how it would react.
This and growing up in central Washington and a few winters in North Dakota helped a lot. ;-)
Practicing skidding and recovery is the best thing you can do to improve your winter driving skills. I used to do this on company parking lots when I was a delivery driver. In the end, I could slide sideways through the gates and into the plant roads with full control. Quite a sight for the security guards...:-)!

I encouraged my nephew to do this when he was starting to drive about 10 years ago. He took his car to an empty high school parking lot at night, skidded around a bit, and someone called the cops on him. Times have changed. I used to get the old rear-wheel drive family car out in the snow and do donuts in any vacant parking lot I could find. I wasn't bothering anyone and no one bothered me.
Only once did the Police show up but luckily after I explained what I was doing they agreed with my thinking and left.
I live in the greater Seattle area where there is little snow and if it does, I stay home. ;-)
@@TairnKA That's about what happened with my nephew, he explained what he was doing, the cops could see he wasn't drunk, but they made him leave. We're in Colorado and we get more snow than Seattle so he needs to drive in snow regularly. Me, I'm retired, and like you, when it snows I stay home.

No one has ever seen this yet where I live. Look at all the new technology on cars and trucks today, antilock brakes, traction control, back up camera, self parking, on and on and people still can't drive. We supposedly have smart everything today but it seems like the people are getting stupider.
People are lazy, stupid, and they just build stuff to let idiots still drive. Doesn't matter how many safety nancies they put in vehicles people will still get into accidents in great weather throw a couple snow flakes into the mix and it gets even worse. They really don't teach any driving anymore, they just hand out licenses to everyone that wants to buy one. Doesn't help that many people have no driving experience until after they get their license, then suddenly they think they're the greatest driver because they got those dozen backup cameras, and all those safety nannies to get them around.

Im a CDL plow truck driver for my DPW. It is awful these days vs even ten yrs ago out in the snow, im in new england. No one has a clue what to do. At least back then people had common sense and problem solving abilities. And its funny, u never see capable vehicles out in the snow storm that arent actually clearing snow. Its always the prius, camry, accord, hyundai, etc. When i was a kid in the 80s it was the 74 caprice wagon with chains and loaded with sand bags motoring through, my mom had one! The prius with bald street tires... stay home
I've had quite a few cars but only 1 car without AWD or 4X4 it was RWD and it was fun AF 😂😂😂 rarely drove it in winter tho. Also thank God for ABS brakes too 🙏🙏

@@hallucinatedovens8414 one of the best cars I ever had in the snow was a 57 Oldsmobile. I've had six of them. Having reverse right underneath low is great for rocking it out of being stuck.
