    Tried Jaming our sony's like this but they do indeed drift apart by more than a couple frames over a half day shoot.
    For some people this is "close enough". But we ended up buying the 3-pack of the TC-1 and also got the Deity TC23 instead of using Sony's BNC adapter.
    Now our FX6, FX3 and ZOOM F6 are all EXACTLY sync'd for an entire shoot day. The set I have I tested - they dropped apart by 1 frame after about 36 hours. Pretty good!

      Dear Envisage Studios, yep, as I said the loss of sync is very light but there is some... as I see you shoot very long forms... If you have budget, of course, go for the safest solution.
      And OK the TC23 was not available at the time of recording of this video (at least in Europe) but it's a great solution overall!

      It would be interesting to see when that setup would experience a drift. If you have a slate, you could set all three to record the slate while displaying their own timecode and see when the drift starts to happen. That way you’ll figure out your max shoot length before you’d have to re-jam sync your cameras.

      Hi "Hard is Easy", on the A7SIII you will need to keep the TC-1 connected at all times and you will loose one audio channel to record the timecode signal. Ideally if you are looking into an upgrade you should go for FX series cameras and, once you have "paired" the FX cameras you will still have the TC1 available for your A7SIII. Hope this was useful for you. Have a good day and thanks for your support to the channel!

      Good question but I think because Bluetooth is not consistent in terms of lag and delays. Only devices from the same brand can successfully sync by Bluetooth I think!

    • @brodtkunst
      @brodtkunst Před rokem

      @@impromptuvideo Correct, delay also arises because a high data rate has to be sent. Only in this case it is quite low. Ultimately, it is sent again and again, which means that a constant is calculated. I use Atomos blue sync, it accesses several devices at the same time and there are no problems here.

      Any one should work (e.g. tentacle). However, sony / tentacle say that there will be a slight drift on their cameras that do not have a dedicated timecode port, so use this tip with those cameras at your own risk I suppose.

    Thanks. Just subscribed. Great tip as I want to move to multi cam capability for video. Is this just limited to FX3 and FX30 or can it also be set in other cameras like the a7iv?
    I have just bought a Deity TC-1 triple kit. Plan eventually to buy an FX3 then maybe a FX30.
    Currently I'm using an a7iv hybrid camera. Was initially planning to use with my MixPre-6ii field recorder for off-camera sound syncing later in DaVinci Resolve. Specifically TC-1 box plugged into audio jack on a7iv (scratch audio right track and audio-timecode on left track) so that Sony's a7iv can also be TC synced at expense of recording high quality sound direct to camera. Audio version of TC is then easily converted into meta data timecode for easy auto sync with metadata marked sound tracks, ex MixPre-6ii.

    • @impromptuvideo
      @impromptuvideo  Před rokem +1

      Hi Ricky! THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT!
      Cameras without internal timecode (such as the A7iv) will work but they require the TC1 to be connected to the camera at all times, plus you will loose an audio channel. If for example you will have: 1 FX3, 1 FX30 and 1 A7iv... all you will need is always only one TC-1.
      You first connect the TC-1 to the FX series camera and then, finally, you keep it connected to the A7iv.
      In other words you may have 1 non-fx camera for each Multicam setup without the need to buy more TC1s.
      If you need more help please just ask!

    I realize that this video is a few months old, but I just stumbled on it while looking into cheap solutions to synchronize a field recorder timecode with a Sony a7 iv. This is very interesting information. Thanks a lot for taking the time to make this video.
    I do have a question: Did you try it on other Sony cameras? I am asking because I looked into the Sony Camera Remote SDK, and there is a set of functions to control the timecode remotely, but these functions are available only for the A7R v, A7 iv, and ZV-E1. Surprisingly, these functions to control timecodes aren't available for the FX3 and FX30. Since the VMC-BNCM1 seems to be a trivial piece of engineering from a conceptual point of view, I was wondering if there would be a chance to make it to work on the A7R v, A7 iv, and ZV-E1.

    • @impromptuvideo
      @impromptuvideo  Před rokem +1

      Dear Come Raczy, thanks a lot for your comment and support to the channel! You may be absolutely right, even if there's no reference to timecode for those cameras it may work anyway if Sony has not "stripped" the functionality out of them. I will try to have it tested but for now I didn't have this chance... I promise I will do my best to have it tested with at least one of these cameras since this can be a big big breakthrough! Thanks for the hint and have great bu$ine$$!

    • @impromptuvideo
      @impromptuvideo  Před rokem +2

      Dear Nima, we should say to Deity and Tentacle Sync to stop producing their devices! Heheh, Joking here. Timecode allows a "scientific" synchronisation not based on audio: you may have different audios on different cameras (see a wedding or ceremony) where cameras go on and off randomly and generate many clips that require a long time to sync manually or using automatic functions based on audio. This is why you want to use a Sync device and a timecode enabled camera.
      Hope this clarifies the thing!

    Can you sync audio mixers as well?

    • @impromptuvideo
      @impromptuvideo  Před rokem +1

      Dear Jesus, thanks a lot for getting in touch!
      I try to give an interpretation to your question: you want to sync not only the camera audio but also a feed coming from a mixer?
      In this case I would connect the mixer to the XLR or TRS of one of the cameras (if your cameras do have timecode internally).
      If not you can either use a timecode enabled audio recorder (like a Zoom for example) or, if you don't want to invest on this, and your mixer can record multitrack audio (anyway you have to record audio somewhere !!!) you may attach the TC-1 as audio input in one of your channels/track and record the timecode signal to it (a mono track will be enough).
      In other words on any non-timecode device you will need to connect the TC1 or other generator and record a sync track.
      In your case I would buy a Zoom F6 and connect the mixer to it and you are pretty safe.
      Hope this helps,
      thanks a for supporting the channel and have a good one!

      @@impromptuvideo so I am looking at zoom f3, I own fx3 and fx6 and after 3-4 hours on youtube, timecode wont work because it only syncs with atomos. I saw someone use the line out of it and send signal to camera with rode mic go but I own dji mic for run and gun and that might be an option. I still wont have timecode thiugh just a safety on f3
      I also wanted to see if I can work around the no top handle fx6 = no audio by syncing timecode and recording on another device. (Just a thought not be necessary since im already working around a simple put on the grip on camera)
      Wait so I can get zoom f3 and 1 timecode generator, sync both cameras and leave it inserted into zoom f3 channel?

      Hi Jesus! Happy to help... hope I got your issue properly... each of your periods will be a progressive number 1,2,3 4:
      1) I would send the out of a digital recorder to a camera only if the camera accepts line signals and not only mic (i.e. XLR handle on a Sony FX)... if you use a digital recorder it would be ok sending scratch audio to the camera through any wireless mic system... but I would consider the Zoom as "main" and the camera one only to sync with audio (rather than timecode).
      2) I don't know if it will work: you need to have very similar audio recordings from 2 cameras to sync through audio.
      I would record everything you can on the Zoom and using timecode on the FX6 and recording there just a scratch audio track.
      3) YES, the timecode track works on anything that can record multitrack audio or video/audio. It only needs one channel so you can still record some mono audio for monitoring / backup sync purposes.
      4) OK, if you give me the exact situation, what you have and what you want to achieve I may be more effective. Send me an email if you want: info@impromptu.video
      Have a good one!
