Lentil pro-tip, pressure cooker. Then you can make even more with lentils, and cross over to the side of dal. Since getting a pressure cooker a year and a half ago, my consumption of lentils went from occasional to all the time. You can even make the best hummus in the world if you use dried chickpeas, soak them overnight, and then pressure cook them for 40 minutes with a natural release, freeze some of the cooking liquid into ice cubes and blend those into the hummus, it makes an absolutely insanely velvety smooth hummus that holds its shape, perhaps blender dependent, I have a Vitamix and it works great, others maybe not so much.
Lentils, brown rice, diced carrot, and soy sauce. Maybe some spinach or diced tomato. Hello sustainable low budget/college meal prep.
I absolutely LOVE lentils and there are so many delicious types to choose from and so many great ways to prepare and cook them.
Linsen (Lentils) und Spätzle is the national dish in Swabia in the Southwest of Germany. We love to eat it with a healthy splash of vinegar, some sausages and pork belly. For me it's the best food in the world.
Thanks for the suggestion. I’m going to try it.
We love Linsen und Spätzle among other things with lentils. And we make our Spätzle from scratch! Lecker!
I have to have red lentil, grated ginger with brown rice soup, easy, high fiber and wonderful served with yogurt and mixed fruit chutney, YUM!
Thank you for the tips on the different colors of lentils. I didn’t know there were so many different kinds.
I really appreciate this tutorial. I'm clumsy with lentils. This will help.:)
This is the advice I needed to start cooking with lentils! Thanks
Best lentils I ever made: I didn't have any mint, but I had some mint tea. So I threw a tea bag in with the cooking lentils. So good!
I’ve been vegan for five years and I got these bad boys to thank. Lentil bolognese, sloppy joes, soups, protein wraps, etc so much you can make!
First time I cooked lentils, it was the recipe on the back of the Trader Joe's red lentils bag, and I was hooked. I also give lentils as a side dish to my toddler around 5 days a week (they keep in the fridge)
Even haggis based on lentils.
@@BobGeogeo that’s a new one. I’ll have to look into that
We are not vegan or vegetarian but lentils have always played a huge part in our diet.
Lentils. Where cheap, tasty, filling & healthy intersect.
More lentil recipes, please.
They actually do periodically, I know Becky Hays has done lentil soups on the channel before for starters. Why not to to the main channel page, click on videos and peruse? Or, better yet, subscribe to ATK/Cooks Illustrated and get their recipes?
@@johnhpalmer6098 Hi, you assumed incorrectly.
@@Phoenix016 Did you even look? I have, just now, and here is a link to a bunch of lentil based recipes.
czcams.com/users/results?search_query=americas+test+kitchen+does+lentils
@@johnhpalmer6098 more means in addition to what is already there. Why do you assume I am not familiar with the recipes they have?
@@Phoenix016 OK, so I misunderstood, then again, you could figure out how/when/where to use them, take a recipe, any recipe and then riff on it if you must and there are other sources besides ATK/Cooks Illustrated and Cooks Country for lentil recipes. Just sayin'.
I've noticed recently that it's getting harder to find those French green lentils. They used to have them even at Walmart and other supermarkets around me, but recently they've basically all but disappeared. Now the only ones I can find cost like 4x as much at Whole Foods or resellers on Amazon.
Do you have an Aldi in your area?
My fav lentil dish is lentils and rice cooked in chicken stick garnished with salsa picante and caramelized onions.
More demos and receipts for lentils! Didn't know how to deal with them! Thanks! 🤓
Why not Google recipes with lentils in them and see what comes up? They ARE a legume so are good for you and while they don't require as long a cooking time as most dried beans, they are a good source of fiber. Check out the Mediterranean diet for ideas as many regions around the Mediterranean Sea use much the same ingredients and have similarities of cuisine.
Thank you.
The thing about red lentils is that they lose their salmon colour as soon as they hit boiling water. That's why turmeric is usually added to them to return some of the colour.
I think turmeric is added for more reasons than colour
Thanks for the tip!
Mmm, love lentils! Lentil sausage soup is the bomb
I love lentil soup! Unfortunately not many other people do and you never see it in buffets or restaurants.
Thai, India, France - and many other cuisines ....all heavily use lentils - make your own, it's SO easy !!
@@suzannes5888: Yes however unfortunately not here in the U.S.
@Robert Telarket I was born and raised in the US...and even small towns have Thai and Indian food these days. There are also TONS of easy recipes on CZcams that you can put together very quickly. The US is the most ethnically diverse country in the world...especially when it comes to grocery market diversity and cooking at home.
I don't know. The bar has been set. Do you have a jingle? Check out the Kale episode. 🙂
Thanks for the Lentil intel.
We love lentils!!!!
Oh thank you
I took the green lentils and some green soybeans, mixed them together, made what I have dubbed ... Soy-Lent Green oddly it tastes like ... people.
I haven't ever eaten people. But I notice you admit you have. 🙂

The best soup I ever had was called Continental Lentil at Soup Plantation/Sweet Tomatoes Buffet which unfortunately closed all their doors about 2 years ago.
Thank you the Lentil class
Just stopping by to say hello! ATK is the best way to get the right info On everything!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH❤
I like lentils but am not a fan of the skin that separates off of brown or green lentils when I cook them. Yes, I have quite hard water which I’ve learned affects bean skins. Would soaking the lentils in the described salt water address that problem?
Why don't you get one of those water filter pitchers? I have a Pür water filter on my kitchen sink tap.

How about red wine vinegar next?
I wish this video included some nutritional information, such as fiber content, protein content, etc. Otherwise a nice short video to enjoy. Actually I am amazed that a channel dedicated to cooking technologies and techniques can publish so many videos that are completely devoid of any nutritional information, as if nutrition is not important. I hope this feedback is well received.
Furthermore to your comment, I wish all their recipes had a nutritional profile attached.
Well, I fixed myself a big pot of Rancho Gordo lentils just the other night. They were good.
I can never find the French lentils. Any suggestions?

French lentils stay intact much better. My favourite.
Greetings from California 😋
Lentils, pennies from heaven
Lentils are great. I can never find those French ones. Even the black ones are hard to find
Amazon!!
Are lentils and split peas the same thing?
I love lentils but never make them at home. Why? This is dumb. I bet ATK's recipes for them are great. :)
Question. I wonder how Lentils would work as a substitution for chili instead of beans.
That sounds delicious. I just wrote another post about the Indian dish dal makhani, which I’m told shares some key ingredients with refried beans. To me, it almost seems like you could call it refried lentils because of the shared qualities between the two dishes.
I’ll bet you would need to cook your chili meat longer than the lentils, since I think lentils turn to mush a little more easily than beans do.
I've used them and they taste great in chili.
also, lentils are part of the legume family so are similar to beans in many ways, though they typically don't require as long a cooking time as most beans do.
👌👌👌👌💥💥💥
I like a lentil!
Great info! I get major gas from eating Lentils. Is there something in the lentils that is causing that?
It's just an added benefit of lentils. Who doesn't like a good gas bomb while sitting on their couch watching youtube videos?
You could try gas enzyme pills like Gas-X. They usually work pretty well.
Bean-O liquid or Gas-X pills will help with your flatulence problem. Bean-O goes in the cooking pot, Gas-X by mouth after eating.
Fix your poor gut health. Then keep adding fiber and lentils slowly in small amounts everyday, 10-14 days later a lot of that goes down or away. Fiber takes a small time and incremental approach, as your gut adapts the gas goes down.
@@jcools310You know about FODMAPS, I'm sure. I have significant fodmap issues. I like lentils but the oligosaccharides in them give me such gastrointestinal grief that I have to avoid them. I also avoid onions, garlic, celery, broccoli cauliflower, apples, stone fruits, and berries to name a few.
How to cook yellow split peas?
You mean hulled and split lentils ? Yellow lentils and brown lentils are the same
Similar to the red lentils
Lentils
Lentils have some of the most-nutritious vitamins, minerals and calories vs the majority of all other vegs, legumes, tubers - running alongside beans and sweet potatoes.
Lentils are part of the legume family so will be high in fiber, an important part of them, and beans and is a great substitute for any meat you ingest.
Sorry put lentils are not rich in vitamins. Lentils are mostly rich in minerals
@@kevinwilson3337 Quit being a troll. Lentils are also a good source of vitamin A, thiamin, folate, and β-carotene and also contain considerable amounts of riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, vitamin K, and vitamin E. The limited availability of these vitamins in common food sources makes their presence in lentils highly valuable." Quote the National Library of Medicine.
that outro was so off the cuff lmao
Who does the repair/maintenance on your kitchen aid mixers. Or do you guys just Chuck them in the dumpster.
This video and the information contained within are Angel-approved 😇
Honestly I’m still confused about lentils and they really did guild me…
Inexpensive @ $ 10 /Lb, LMAO.
$1 per pound here in NE Ohio
At Walmart.
lentils destroy the testicles
DESTROY THE TESTICLES!
Lentils were one of the first plants to be domesticated. Human population has gone up by BILLIONS since agriculture was invented. Seems what youre saying is BS.
Explain why please
Lentils will make you fart. A lot.
yes, so does any other bean as they are a legume. You can reduce the fart issue by properly soaking most beans, not sure if needed with lentils, drain them off, use fresh water and then cook, with some taking several hours until done.
while it won't eliminate the farting, but it'll reduce it by quite a bit.
To soak, cover them with water, let sit covered overnight, drain, refill with fresh water and cook. OR, you can do the quick boil if you forgot to get them soaking the evening before you cook them and that is, cover them with water, bring to a boil, turn OFF the heat, put the lid on and let them sit in the hot water for an hour, drain, refill with fresh water and then cook.
Sprouting or soaking them reduces the “music” a bit.
These people are telling you ways to get rid of it, but I enjoy farting lol. Especially if you live alone, it's a nice pleasant little butt trumpet toot.
Noooo, don't tell clue the people in about lentils!!
This was the whitest lentil presentation I've ever seen.
-J"ust put them in salads....and oh, brown people do some stuff with them too" Was my takeaway.
they also give you diarrhea in large quantities.... trust me I know lol
Sounds like a personal problem with above normal intake of fiber.
One of the worst movies ever!
lol
Why eat lentils when red meat exists
Why eat red meat when lentils exist?
Just sayin…
@@h2hcamey exactly!
One good reason is they may contain fiber, like most legumes do as well. Most meats have some, but likely not enough to compensate for eating beans, so are often combined and I think lentils are part of the legume family.
Why not both?
There are atleast 200 different varieties of lentils
