People often buy these doodle/poodle mixes bc they’re fad dogs, and aren’t given proper care instructions. I’ve had many people tell me their “breeder” said their doodle didn’t need daily brushing or monthly grooming. Also you just don’t know everyone’s situation. I have some very loving owners who are older or disabled, and over the past few years proper brushing is nearly impossible with their chronic illness. They used to be able to brush daily but now it’s very hard to do that. Of course this isn’t everyone, I’ve had a lot of clients with the time and ability to take care of their dog and still choose to be lazy. It does suck to see these dogs this way, and it’s amazing we have groomers and vets to care for them.

I appreciated how you had no judgement towards this owner. We don’t know the situation or how he got this bad, but you mentioned he’s a senior dog and how the owner was unable to brush him so maybe we should all not jump to conclusions about how awful the owner is. Health issues happen at the drop of a hat that can leave you handicapped and broke. It’s not always easy to take care of anyone but yourself when it does happen. I would love to see a family member step up to help care for this big guy if his owner is unable to. I’m sure after having him so long just giving him up wouldn’t be an easy choice for them.

With how accessible everything is nowadays, including mobile grooming, there is no excuse for this negligence towards an animal.

    • @2bit156
      @2bit156 Před 2 lety +2

@@janean3773 yeah well the criticism is, or should be, when someone gives an old dog away when they don’t want to deal with death or when people suddenly decide “dogs are too much” despite being perfectly capable of caring for the animal.
This is different. Also I agree, I think it was a bit dangerous to groom a senior dog like a normal one. Thank God it didn’t slip.

We are dedicated about grooming our dogs, but during this pandemic it has been impossible to get grooming where we live. With a shih tzu and a SCWTerrier, grooming isn’t an option. So we have been learning to do it ourselves which has included a lot of apologizing to our fur babies. The Shih Tzu mats if he breathes. It literally happens in an hour. Using the line brushing technique has helped immensely.

I currently have my second Golden Doodle that has reached senior years. She recently turned 12. And, I had one before there were Doodles. My father brought one home in 1974, who made it to 15 1/2. Grooming these dogs is a full time task. They could use it about every two months, and brushing them, my girl now hides when she sees a brush or scissors, and when the bath or shower water are on. Cleaning the poop from the tush is a must, imo, or it will be in your home, but these dogs require lots of grooming to avoid matting and rarely sit still for it.
I love my Doodles, but they are smart, a handful and only want to do what they want to do. But, they are great dogs. Never met one with a bad disposition.

It must be difficult to keep a big dog clean back there! I have a 10 lb Papillon who sometimes gets poop on her in that area. I check her back-end every time she comes inside. If there's any poop, she goes right into my little sink in the laundry room. It's super easy to clean her off. I use Dawn Dish Spray (not regular Dawn), and spray the area and then spray her off with the faucet sprayer. I towel her off and then have a blow dryer area set up to dry her. The whole thing takes less than 10 minutes and it keeps her clean. She's 9 years old and so she's used to what we call getting her little booty spray, lol.
It would be a much more challenging situation if I couldn't pick her up and put her in the sink though! Before her I always had big dogs (labs), but they are short-haired, so this was never an issue with them.

      @@ripleyrogers224 100% truth!!
Doodle owners are the absolute worst, and the VERY reason I left grooming after 10 years. Literally EVERY conversation I had with a doodle owner went like this.
Doodle owner: I don’t want any hair taken off.
Groomer: You realize he hasn’t been groomed professionally in 6 months. Have you been brushing him regularly at home?
Doodle owner: No, he doesn’t like for us to do it and anyway the breeder told us they are low maintenance. They don’t even shed. We prefer he be long and fluffy, so we don’t want his hair cut.
Groomer: I’m sorry, but it’s very likely he will be very matted next to the skin since no regular brushing has been done. While I don’t mind brushing him out, it will be much less painful to trim his hair short. We can then show you how to brush him out regularly at home so that we can both maintain the length you prefer.
Doodle owner: Well if you can’t do what I’m paying you to do, then I’ll take him somewhere else.
I LOVED grooming and I love doggies, but it was the best decision I ever made. I groom my two standard poodles and the rest is up to everyone else.

Though one time my regular groomer was booked solid so I had to take my dog to a new groomer. He gets easily matted around him bottom so I always get that area shaved. I asked the groomer to shave that area, but she didn't speak the best English. I came to pick up my completely bald dog haha. He looked so different. He is normally 80% fluff so he looked so slim. It was the middle of winter though, so I had to buy him a coat to stop him getting cold until his hair grew back.

As a Doubledoodle (half goldendoodle and half labradoodle) owner it’s up to us to educate people looking to get a Doodle about their grooming needs. People would always stop me and ask me about my dog and if they are good dogs. I would respond and say absolutely. What I use to fail to say is they’re great dogs but, they do require grooming maintenance both professionally as well as day to day in your home. I started seeing doodles end up in rescues and part of it was because of their maintenance. Now I always make sure to tell people about their grooming and daily maintenance as well.

I have a poodle mix and brush him daily and “spot clean” fir a total time spent daily is about 30 mins. I do bathe him once a month and he is groomed every 3-4 months.
This dog was seriously neglected, the poop on his fur that caused a seriously uncomfortable sore is neglect. Very sad. Otto seems like such a sweet dog. Otto looks great. I hope he never has to go through this again.

Yes. We all know Otto is a very good dog, but it is probably his owners that didn’t wash him or groom him for a VERY long time. I’m not blaming the owners, but I think Otto deserves better. @Go Groomer. Also, thanks so much for cleaning Otto, and pretty much saving Otto’s fur lol.

Aww. He looks so handsome! And happy. And looks like he feels so much better. My doodle is going to the groomer tomorrow also. His groomer has worked with him since first groom. He gets so happy when he sees her and looks so handsome afterwards as well. Nice job Otto !
