@davidpeistrup2892 that's correct but there's even more to the story. Mac complained bitterly to Andre Agassi, who was then friends with MacEnroe, about Graf pulling out of the mixed when they had a real shot at the title, but what Mac didn't know was Agassi was secretly dating Steffi Graf at the time ( they kept it secret to avoid the media) so Agassi bit his tongue while Mac went ballistic

Steffi said later that while she had always dreamed of playing with John, it was much too intense, along with her singles commitments.
She said she never would have done it again.
I mean she retired 3 months later.
Her body was finished at top class tennis.
On top of that John went on letterman & called her out. Called her a 'blanking blank'
Steffi was very private. This was a low blow.

Steffi was an incredible player but not a great person. Her behaviour towards Seles after a Graf fan stabbed her showed her lack of empathy. She was also considered coke and arrogant by other players. Novotna said that unlike someone like Hingis (who she had her own issues with) Graf never once in her life would admit her opponent was better after she lost. I always admired Steffi for her immense skill - perhaps even the GOAT? - but never liked her as a person.

@@gentlemanjim480what a load of crap. Steffi visited Seles immediately after the attack. Where were the rest? ie Maggie and ASV? Did you expect Steffi to crawl and kiss Seles’ feet? She spoke in her press cons about the stabbing and denounced it, she dedicated half her US Open speech to the drama Queen and made numerous attempts to contact her but was turned down. What did you expect Steffi do so that your moro.ic brains would be satisfied? Retire? Slash her wrists? Become a nun? Hide? Grovel in front of Seles? What an idiotic and nonsensical comment.

I too wish Steffi hadn't withdrawn. I recall that Steffi twinged her back and asked the officials to put off her late doubles match until the next day. They refused and she withdrew. But as a player with back trouble, I know that often if you just play, the back works out. Of course, Steffi had professional advice and, of course, it appeared she would win the singles and the mixed doubles was still a long shot. I think John's disappointment and her back led her to retire just a few weeks after Wimbledon.

I remember how much McEnroe was angered by Steffi withdrawing from the mixed. When she asked him to play mixed at the Big W, he agreed, on the proviso that she not default from the mixed tournament, as she had a history of doing in doubles matches. I don´t know the exact daytime, but he DID play a tough five setter in doubles just the day before his singles final against Connors in 1984.
Also, he played the 1980 doubles semifinal on the same day (!) as his semifinal against Connors!
And of course, his 1983 doubles final also took place just the day before the final, like it always did in those days.
So I don´t really see the difference, to be honest.
