- The Hollywood Hills are peppered with several architectural wonders from pre-war Austrian and German designers. However, none lay quite as enveloped by its natural landscape as the 1947 Rudolph Schindler-built home of Pamela Shamshiri-the interior design maven whose client list includes Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and musician Beck.
Austrian architect Rudolph Schindler built Shamshiri’s Lautner house-named after the original proprietor-in the weeks following a visit to the prehistoric masonry dwellings of the Pueblo native Americans who built their homes into cliff faces. Wedged in a V-shape in the side of Laurel Canyon, the Lautner home captures the same spirit of the earthenware masonry homes that were both a part of nature and voyeurs on it.
Shamshiri has frequently commented on how her home resembles a tree house; endless glass walls provide uninterrupted views of verdant nature in the valley beyond and below. Clerestory windows diffuse light throughout the building and sliding doors honor Schindler’s intention to create rooms that invite nature in.
The LA-based designer spent eight years restoring the modernist building back to Schindler’s original design, aided by early black-and-white photographs, plans and drawings diligently archived by University of California Santa Barbara. Half a century and eight owners later, Shamshiri sandblasted 17 layers of paint to reveal the building’s natural grain, and tore down marble, drywall and black granite to showcase Schindler’s stainless steel fireplace and brick columns.
Shamshiri also reinstated key furnishings such as built-in asymmetric sofas, a mirrored bar and a pull-out dining table. However, not all the renovations were beholden to the spirit of Schindler’s master plan. The galley kitchen was extended to fit more people and an entirely new Onsen-like bathroom was built, boasting a cedar tub and plywood cabinets. Shamshiri has matched her own design eye with Schindler’s philosophy of using low materials for high design to create a truly modernist family home, one which has been revealed as a gift to architectural history.

This is one of the best houses in NOWNESS. I love NOWNESS In Residence so much! Please do more videos.
This...THIS...is why I work. Not even sure if I'll ever get to a point in my life like this, where I can shelter myself in a place like this, but I'd be damned if I don't work towards it.
if this is what you really want, first do everything you can to find out how you can get it, and then to everything you can to stick to your functional plan. don't hope for it. find a way and work the right way, and you will have it.
Good luck!
The only way to have one similar or in an smaller scale, is to buy a plot in a cheap area then starting the building yourself and no more than couple of other workers at a time. Design is everything. Mine looks nicer due to the hours that I put thinking in this or that. In that way you can do the best for the intended budget
Great Aunt Adele lived near this house in the 70's. A colleague of her husbands lived in this gem and wanted to sell it. He was the one who "updated' the facades. He would say, " looks like you're running on empty", if your wine glass was low. Believe he got that from a current song then by Jackson Brown. Adele knew the integrity, Felix knew the expense and being a German knew who Schindler was. They moved to Sedona Arizona and tried to copy what this house was about, but the local architect was not wise to modernism and they ended up with a suburban dumbed down dwelling, even though they took him to this masterpiece. Congratulations, this was amazing to see.
If this is my house, I’d throw my phone and forget about all my social media platforms. I’ll gasp in awe every morning and make a sigh of relief every night.
nofirstname nolastname do it anyway
P K I need CZcams though. Everything but CZcams? Please?
CZcams is a streaming platform not social medium, at least for me
P K then it’s settled. I’ll keep CZcams 😋
I've done it, it's fantastic! I recommend it to everyone. And no, it is not necessary to have that beautiful house (although living in Barcelona helps a lot hahaha 😉😘)
This house is so elegant that if I lived here I don't think I could ever have a one-night stand here out of respect for the house.
If you took a girl back here she would dump you and start dating the house
'Lets have a relationship out of respect for the house'
If I came here for a one night stand I would think about this house for the rest of my life.
😹😹
My friend has a lovely place in New York and I told him not to bring any woman back too early or she would pretend to love him just for the house.
This is the most beautiful home I might have ever seen. I see so many homes that are supposed to be architecturally special and they simply aren’t. This was.
This house is like a love poem to living. I’m so grateful to them for restoring this masterpiece.
Even her voice is relaxing, just like her house.
"Nature reveals itself to a house"
"High design, low materials"
"Spacial-caves to view nature"
"Architectural lampshade"
Obsessed with this series... Always makes my day when I see a new In Residence video.
me two . some how it' has the ability
to take me far away to experience place and vibes this show helps me cope with quarantine
The overall design is insane.
Such respect and understanding of the architect's vision and intent. Beautiful artwork throughout in harmony and with nature. Truly a home that one word describes it all... Wow!
This is a complete evolution of Wright's vision of organic architecture. The house truly looks as it is a part of the landscape. This is a sanctuary not just a home!
Wow. Perfect. "When your house sings and is incredible and gives back to you.." Selah
She has this air to her voice that's so moving
This house really is a huge tree house, stunning.
This is one of the most elegant and beautiful houses I've ever seen.
The idea that something like this exists somewhere gives me a lot of joy ♥️🎈
I adore what she has done with the place. The quality of design after the remodel is just sublime!
Beautifully designed house!! Love the bathroom. A soothing place.
This house hits me right in the heart. Idk but there s something special with this architecture being with nature. I feel like at peace just watching. Damn..
Schinder was one of the greats of the 20th century, it was reassuring that this house ended up in the right hands.
This series brings me so much happiness
The soundtrack is perfect
so grand yet so calm...so rich yet so humble..kudos to the architect.
I seriously rewatch the residence videos for the serotonin boosts. Bless.
I could listen to this woman speak for hours. Gorgeous house too

This is a great presentation of the architecture! I especially love the shot of the lamp in the window & the framing of the homeowner. Great video!
Amazing house, beautifully restored, huge time and effort must have went into that restoration, Kudos to Pamela for doing such a good job, and the furnishings and decor really enhance the house.
Just wow! This house is serene.
Magical. Special. I’m in love with this place.
I stopped breathing for the entire video. Amazingly beautiful building.
takes my breath away.
This is not house ..this is meditation ....soooo pure...
Love the bathroom. The objects in this house are perfectly chosen.
I don’t think I’ve awaited anything like the drop of an In Residence video.
I am so glad you returned the house to itself :)
What a stunning house ! But the library/den at the end ! ! ! I could spend the rest of my life in that room !
Yes, I'm in love with this house. 💘
Not my style of house but I have great respect for how lovingly they restored the house. Love the windows and trees.
I like the asymmetrical floating roof with the glass inserts between it and the walls.
I wish the Nowness videos were longer. I don't think 3-4 minutes are enough to appreciate all the beauty.
Beautifully done. Refuge. Yes.
this a lovly house.thank you for sharing.its such houses which make plp like me follow my dreams of building such houses.thank you.
Gentle harmony. Thx Nowness.
Designer did a great job letting the external elements invade the dwellings privacy which is nothing but a very pleasant perpetual connection thru all seasons and times of the day
Surely the owners inhabit within a true sense of soothing calm and weightlessness
Love this. Explained and presented perfectly.
I can watch these features the whole day 🧡

Wow this is an incredible home
Wonderful. It really feels like a home.
Her last name means "of the sword" in persian. So basically her name is "Pamela of the sword". Pretty cool.
Awesome video,as always!!Love th3se posts!!
Breathtaking❣❣❣
I want to live in a place like this
Her hair is soo lovely. And her house.
Very glad this owner restored the original lines of the house. It looks vintage and modern at the same time. I would have used some colors though. It feels restful and Japanese in its natural tones of beige, wood, steel, but I like colors on walls to make spaces more lively and playful. This interior sort of fades away, such an absence of color. Love the fireplace! One of the hardest things to do in interior design is to use restraint. This she has done.
Lass-in Angeles, She chose the muted tones to recover from the garishness of the outside world with its glaring hot angry neon palette. Perhaps you are young and not yet world-weary. That’s a good thing. Eventually you will want calmness and simplicity.
@@sarahloffler1872 Oh my. How patronizing! I'm not dead yet. In my coffin I won't see colors so I will make an effort to be surrounded by color at all times. Nature is not devoid of color. Only death is. Sunsets are vibrant, yet calm. Blue lakes are bluest when calm. A lawn is bright green yet is calm. So your logic is illogical. Anyone who decorates in sepia tones is already dead, just waiting for a coffin. Like you.
What a bombic beautiful house!
Props to the owners and well done story by nowness
Such a beautiful home
I love the music too.

It's built really well right? Great music, great shots and scene editing. They really work with some awesome artists. I just wish they'd credit the people well

Nowness: Please edit your text to show the correct client name: Richard Lechner. ((John Lautner, like Rudolf Schindler, was a LA architect who designed a number of modernist residences in the area after spending time in Frank Lloyd Wright's studio.)
Thanks for bringing us this video. It is good to see the Lechner house revived...
Yeah they really need to improve their credits🤔
Love this design! Are the trees noisy in the wind though?
wow!
Schindler meets Shamshiri, could there be a better dance!
Ok Oberg! I see you!
my goal in life is to have a house like this
WoW 💥
