This is the weirdest drum set Ive EVER seen. Ben, from the Big Fat Five Podcast, found this on his local Craigslist and as soon as I saw them, I knew I needed them. This is an Impact drum, which there isn’t too much info about them on the internet. Everyone, including myself, seems to quote the same forum post from Jon Bermuda, drummer for Weird Al, whenever referencing these drums. Bermuda endorsed Impact drums for about 20 years and is the only one that seems to know anything about them.
Impact drums have a thin fiberglass shell with a large cutaway and frontal sound hole for maximum projection. These definitely are in the weird drums family and give off north drums and staccato drums vibes, even though they are very different. My kit is a little rough around the edges and could use some work…

In the air tonight lol
hi
When the levee breaks
"Unchained" VH
Wake up by suicide silence
They sound 10x better than I expected. Seems like the “floor tom” would be a better rack tom and a conventional floor tom would be a good addition. Those original Remo PTS kits didn’t even have lugs. They just had clips to hold the heads on.
Agreed, they sound really good.
Yeah, I definitely wasn't expecting that either. Pretty cool! 🤟
A friend in high school had a white PTS set with those clips - and they sounded OK! Have seen a few sets on eBay over the years, but they clearly did not stick with the concept. Interesting for sure.

Very disappointed you didn’t put one of the toms on your head as a helmet, so you could look out the front rectangular slot with your eyes.
😂 Hilarious I was thinking the same thing
I actually came to see if he did this I'm still stuck in the ads, very sad now
First thing I’d have done🤷♂️
@@joelmartin3213 Same. 👊
Seemed obvious to me.
Shocked at how good they sounded. So many modern kits sound exactly the same to me, nice to hear something unique.
Agreed!!
I'm no drum player, but how would some of those "hydro" 2 plus oil filled sound on this?
They look odd, but sound great.
A real 80's vibe, maaan!
Was gonna say the same thing. A real Miami Vice vibe!
Just want to say, while the drums themselves are super cool, I really appreciate the history lessons! I know they’re probably more work for video editing, voice over, and research, but I thought it was really neat to learn about them! (Now I’m kinda wishing that we got to hear the full section at 8:06!)

I thought they would be horrible but they were incredible musical and amazing
Even the floor Tom blended well to me.
Maybe I’m crazy or I just love old sounding drums
Especially the Phil Collins fill you did
@photag216 I have some cool drumming content as well check it out
I was wondering if anyone else caught that little bit of sweetness.
@@youtubeTrole I love Phil Collins.
I always pull that fill out because it always entertains me so much
Dude, that's a good kit. I wouldn't shy away from swapping hardware with modern parts if they fit.
Honestly kinda Shook by the sound. It was like instant 80’s without anything electronic being plugged in. Kinda hope this hits 10k likes now lol sorry Dave!
Kinda wondering how much of that sound is mixing, and how much of it is the drum set itself
@@ahorseinahospital right, if they sound that good by themselves he found a hell of an old kit
Yup. I heard Miami Vice in the back of my head.
@@ahorseinahospital I subtracted the reverb in my head (lol) and they still sound very 80’s to me. Nice sound, tight and projecting.
I thought same thing
You need to play in the air tonight on this 😆
Yessss!!!!
100%
They sound excellent! Surprised at how good they sounded in the mix. Did you try mic'ing the port holes? That kit looks like it wants mics all around it.
They actually sound better than I was expecting. Could see them being used as some sort of auxiliary percussion part.
My first thought was "they remind me of the drums a couple of high school marching bands were using back in the 80's". Yeah, they probably ARE the same brand. Probably the same drums as the marching toms, just with different mounting hardware. The heads are pre-tuned. There is very little range of adjustment possible with them. I remember one of the instructors I was working with telling me about the toms at one of his schools. Kid broke a head shortly before they went onto the field. He didn't have any of the pre-tuned heads available so he took a knife and cut out the broken head. Grabbed a regular head and used the old hoop on it. Tuned up the drum and the shell promptly collapsed. Oops.
Yep. I made the comment above that it's an old set of marching tenors.
If I were a gigging drummer (bars, weddings, etc.), I could be seriously tempted on these just for something that looks unique on stage! I've long maintained that for such purposes, as long as the drummer is adequate, the quality/type/brand of drums/cymbals are almost irrelevant! Your average bar/nightclub patron or wedding/party guest isn't going to really notice the difference, or care. As long as you can keep the beat, and the rest of the band are decent, people should be having a good time!
I wouldn't say the quality of the kit is almost irrelevant, I would say it's wholly irrelevant. A skilled drummer can make even a dime store kit sound like a million bucks.
@@Durwood71 I wouldn’t say it is irrelevant though. It’s really just a misconception that quality instruments make a performance more enjoyable. They really only make the playing more enjoyable. Not that it’s entirely a waste of money, but it is not essential to play on a nice set of drums
@@Durwood71 Yeah it's wholly irrelevant when the quality of a drum kit is so horrible that it's cheap imported bolts, lug casings, and wing nuts strip out, leaving your drums detuned and on the floor for a gig. I'll bet you'd still sound like the greatest drummer in the world no matter, because your playing them 🤣🤣🤣
The only way you could make yourself sound any dumber is to deem yourself as a working drummer, or even a drummer for that matter.
@@soterudsvarten8356 No doubt, I would love to beat on a top of the line drum set just because of how much fun it would be, but I also know it wouldn't make my borderline competent playing any better.
we gotta get to 10k likes FAST i wanna see this kit to its full potential
This kit sounds really good. It’s got that mega 80s pop funk vibe. Kinda that Minneapolis Kit sound.
I'm blown away at how much better these sound versus what I thought they would sound like. Wow...just wow!
Remo PTS Series is the “Pre-Tuned Series”. I actually owned a Remo PTS drum set that had those heads and they did not traditional tuning lugs. The heads were mounted to the shell with a latch because they did not have to be “tuned”. Very low end kit probably marketed as a starter kit. I apologize that I do not have pictures of it (probably because that was almost 35 years ago. Thanks for the great videos David!
I had a PTS kit too. I was 13 year old kid in the early 1980s and it was an inexpensive starter kit, which I outgrew in a year or so. There's actually an instructional video with Louie Bellson using PTS drums.
Ah, the Remo PTS heads! When my brother started playing drums his first kit was a Remo PTS with the latches. Problem was you couldn't tune the heads as they wore in and replacement PTS heads were way more expensive then regular ones.
Thank you for this comment. I am feeling absolutely ANCIENT hearing him say "I never heard of..." all this stuff in the video.
The toms have a nice interval including the floor tom. People usually seem to want the lowest possible tuning but in a mix higher seems to work better to cut through and project.
A couple of great gems in here. Firstly, the drum corps footage of the Madison Scouts that you show your self in the background of features one of my former students in the center of the snare line, Brandon. Secondly, I remember Remo PTS heads from the early 90s. As far as I can remember,I think they were used by the Cavaliers mounted on hula-hoops, but I also remember them being on the marching drums when I was in elementary and junior high school. They were held onto the shell by clips and not even lugs/tension rods.
ha no way, Brandon and I went to high school together.
@@rdavidr Awesome! Great dude!
The craziest thing for me (a Wisconsin boy) was reading that these were made in Wausau, WI! Didn’t know Wausau ever produced drums!
And yeah, the drums sound pretty great! The kick is nice and full, and the toms do sound pretty warm!
I am a little surprised how good they sound, definitely a 70s/80s vibe to them.
You never Cease to Amaze me David! Keep up the Good Work🤘
I just wanna say that you inspire me to repair my drums beacuse they were in bad condition and also to make 6x6 tom-tom and 16x19 floor tom. You are the best drummer/youtuber beacuse you are the most inspiring! Love from Serbia! ❤️

My favorite video you have done to date! They sound great. You really dove into the lore on these drums.
the solo at the end was fantastic!. that SOUNDED AMAZING!
Really want to see this kit restored! Sounds great!
Remo PTS is "Pre-Tuned Sound". I had them on my first drum kit back in the early 80's. I literally cut the head out of the rim, then placed a "normal" head under the rim, tightened the hook-style lugs, and was able to tune as desired. Not ideal, but it really worked and it sounded way better with a Pinstripe vs Remo PTS heads. Cool video.
I played those once upon a time. Bonham played some drums similar to these once. But, not pre-tuned. McCormick also made some fiberglass drums in the 80's. Yes. These are marching band inspired. Check out the Blue Devil's Drum Corps
Classic early 80's sound. You nailed the application. The toms, floor tom and bass drum all sound great within the context of the music.
This is one of the most creative drum channels on CZcams. You and EMC are the best at creating unique content
Sweet kit! I remember seeing Impact drums advertised in Modern Drummer and sold in “The Woodwind and the Brasswind” catalog in the ‘80s. I had the chance to ask Bermuda about them back in the early ‘90s and he gushed about how easy they were to get great sound from. He was right.
If these are the same drums I saw some marching bands use in the 80's......... you wouldn't be saying that. For a single drum set, they're probably not bad to get a good sound from. They sounded absolutely horrible on the marching field. Not sure if it was the nature of the drums with their pre-tuned heads or instructors that just didn't know what to do with them. If you had a few tom players, getting all of them to sound the same was a nightmare. Snares only slightly less. Tuned bass drum parts, good luck.
@@kmabru I was only referring to sets, and Bermuda used tunable heads, not PTSs, so there’s a difference, for sure. I didn’t even realize Impact made marching drums - interesting. I’ve been a lifelong Pearl guy for marching drums, both playing and teaching, so I’ve never come across Impact. Yamaha, Ludwig, Dynasty, Remo, Slingerland, and even Stingray once or twice, but never Impact. I can imagine they were pretty thin-sounding, though.
@@michaelandcolinspop Figured you meant sets. Though I will say this, the toms here look exactly like the marching tenors. One instructor I worked with had them at one of his lines (not his choice). Kid broke a head shortly before they went on the field. Didn't have any proper replacements so he cut out the head with a knife. Used a standard head with the original hoop. Cranked it up to tune it and the shell promptly collapsed. Can't remember how they got around that! Probably borrowed a set of quads from another band.
I marched with Pearl, Slingerland and Ludwig. Did get to try out a set of Premier bass drums, but I was already out as far as marching. I don't recall anyone using Yamaha at the time I marched.
@@kmabru Man, a collapsed tenor shell would be a nightmare even if you weren’t about to go on! The only time I ever saw anything like that from Pearl was with a set of tenors at a school where I instructed, but it wasn’t Pearl’s fault. They were several seasons old when I got there and the kid or kids who played them before apparently had a nasty habit of hitting the bearing edge too often, which eventually caused a bad delamination and partial collapse. There was no fixing that shell, but it gave me a good reason to push the booster club to invest in a brand new line of Pearls. I did see an Acousticon-shelled Remo tenor spock from The Glassmen (Toledo) completely delaminate and collapse after repeated rain shows back in ‘94-‘95. They were at their truck trying to make it work when an instructor took the drum off and chucked it into the trash. Not even the rim or head were salvageable. When the shell collapsed, it took just about else everything with it.
Those are wild-looking drums! I really liked how they sounded. They seemed to have a really fat, beefy sound, and amazingly the floor tom didn't sound bad with the other drums even though it cannot be tuned.
I wasn't expecting them to sound so great! I've never heard of this brand but I hope you make more videos with these!
Feels like Christmas when rdavidr uploads a video ❤️
Honestly, they sound pretty great as they are. I was totally surprised. I would not not change a thing about them. It is sort of like finding a recording studio with a perfect room. If the sound works, don't fix it. Great video, BTW. Cheers.
true, be careful with the revamp
Man, if I could even remotely afford it, I would make you an offer for that kit right now. I absolutely love the way they sound, and the oddity factor is SUPER cool. Awesome. Damn, they sound cool!
Amazing sound
Outside of what a banger of a video this was, the editing style was super sick on this one, keep it up!
the end was great lol. great playing and I loved the 80s feel of the filming/ editing.
Ok I love this high pitched concert tom sound apparently. Didn't think I would be into it but they sound great in this context. Imagine a hybrid of another grey, 4 piece kit with the addition of the two high toms from this kit.
really dig the style of music that you pick for the demonstration fits great with the kit.
The production quality on this video is insane, nice work dave
The definitely personify the 80’s drum sound. Maybe it’s because of the way you tuned them. But definitely as soon as you started the song and started playing, I went thru a Time Machine to 1985!!! 👍🏼
I LOVE this sound! It would be perfect in some Phil Collins stuff.
That was my first thought, a drummer in a band that covers Genesis or Phil Collins solo would love these.
Those sound a lot better than I thought they would. Thanks for showing us them!
Dude! Rad drums! Glad you mentioned North, because they just made me think of them too. Dave King (12 Rods, The Bad Plus, Happy Apple), my favorite drummer, played a North kit the first time I saw him play.
I played something like this some years ago (I think it was the staccato), it was really fun and it had a HUGE live sound. I would be curious to know how this kit sounds on the drummer side and front viewer side.
They sound actually surprised me. I had a Pearl kit a few years back that took me hours and hours to tune to sound halfway decent. Went from the original heads to Remo to eventually settle with Evans heads. Kinda like the set, would be a cool set to convert to electronic drums just for the looks of them.
I was floored when I saw these were made in Wausau, WI. I live there now and never had heard of this brand, which apparently still exists today making drum cases and is only a few blocks away from my house. Thanks for featuring these drums, David! Would love to get my hands on an Impact Marching Snare one day.
That drum fill you played at 10:58 was sick!
So, you received OVER 10,000 likes on this kit video. HAVE YOU DONE THE RESTORATION/MODIFICATIONS?
Thank you for the video and my condolences on you purchasing this drum kit. I made a similar mistake many many years ago purchasing a north drum kit.
Honestly sounded so much better than i imagined lol. thanks for digging up the info on these, super interesting!
definitely has that 70-80's tom sound. for being older and not in great shape they sound really good! ive seen these kits before but from what i remember, i never actually heard one being played past a simple beat. cool to see and hear
Sounds great. 👍 You mixed them in the music well too !!
That brings back memories. At the 4:40 mark, you can see McCormick's on the sticker (not a badge, a sticker). McCormick's was founded by Larry McCormick of Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps fame. I worked at McCormick's for a summer in Arlington Heights (suburban Chicago area). I was the grunt in the warehouse that shipped marching band products such as flags, flag poles, as well as drums. I also repaired drums that had been returned. These were made of fiberglass and had almost no rigidity w/o the hoop/head combo. Thanks for posting!
Totally reminded me of my first kit. Was an impact, same exact style but was white. I remember being beyond confused as to the shape of the shells, and could never find anything as to why they were like that. Love the videos man!
I cant wait to see the revamped kit lmao, love your stuff Rdavidr
The amazing thing with all your videos with strange and weird and possible dead drums is that finally you can did them sound amazing!!! I think you take very fun playing at this kit even same as and with your vintage Tama kit!!
Sounds much better than I expected. Fits well with your backing track
So, that is only the second set of "Impact" drums that I've ever seen. The first being the kit that I have owned since late 1986. There are quite a few differences between the two sets. First, but not all that important, is my shells have solid black wraps with the same white interior. Now, for the fun stuff....my set consists of 10", 12", 13" and 14" inch rack toms. These toms, however, mount on stands that are specifically made for that purpose, so they do not mount on the bass drum. This allows the user to move the toms to any location that they wish (the down side being that the shape of the toms doesn't work well for left-handed drummers). The bass drum is 22"X18" and stands alone, as it has no mounting holes/hardware for toms at all. The floor tom is 16". The set also came with a 14" X 6 1/2" snare. It sounds good, but I always opted for my Pearl, as I just liked the feel and sound of it just a little better. I did use the Impact snare as a back up if needed. I use "pin stripes" on all of the toms and a "super dot" on either snare. I never experienced the head attached to hoop thing, and don't understand that either. All of my shells came with soft cases, so even after all these years, they still look decent. When I purchased them, my intention was to get another kick and an 18" floor tom, but couldn't afford them at the time. By the time I could, the company as you mentioned, weren't making drums any longer. :( So cool to see another set of Impacts on the planet!
Great unique tom sound. Please consider making and selling multilayered round robin samples of this kit.
I loved the drumming at the end. So musical. He is a fantastic drummer.
Hey that song was really good!
Would be glad to hear a full version of it!
When you started playing those toms - instant Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight' hahaha
Here's another idea: As a non-drummer drawn more by the tinkering and home improvement part of your work, I'd appreciate a video where you explained your preference in drum sizes, which you mention every now and then, and where it comes from, going a bit into the general differences and fundamentals made by size. I could search for that elsewhere on youtube but you have that special skill of preparing your thoughts and packaging them neatly in a nutshell so people can understand it, so besides your personal take, it would probably come out better in terms of didactics than from most other creators (with the possible exception of Daniel Glass or Rick Beato.)
That kit sounds great and your mix is awesome
That song at the end!!!! Perfect for those drums!
10k+ can’t wait to see the restoration video!!!
I had a blast watching your video, with all the little references and memes it was certainly a great time and very interesting too, I wish the remo part was on but anyways was a great joke xddd. Much love man
Super sound combine with the tune. Nice play too. Bravo!!!
Great video! Love the history part! Is that my Ming snare in there?!!! 🤘🤘🤘
My first kit in 1983 was a REMO PTS 5 piece kit. The heads looked the same as what are on this kit. It did have flimsy little wire clasps to hold the head on to the shells and after a year of playing, my parents upgraded me to a Pearl Export 7 piece kit with Japanese Rising Sun wraps. If you ever see those for sale, I would be interested in buying at least one as a memento.
Better start wrapping the drums, and making look epic! Cant wait to see the video!
Ill make you a deal i'll sub and follow when you do! Looking forward to it!
Wow, you actually got a killer 70's sound out of them bro! Nice tom work too 😎 I'm sure you hit that 10k 👍 Looking forward to the upgrades! Keep being awesome bro!
Sounds awesome. Good mix! Love the A Custom FX. Such a great sound.
And level with us--out front of the kit do they sound good? Carved up in the mix they're amazing!!
That song is perfect for them! They sound better than expected…throwin’ us back to the 70’s!
This was super dope bro, that sound was so clean
They sound pretty good! I love the fill at the end ala Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" lol!
WOW!!! What an incredible sound!! 100 x better than I expected 👍
man i think they sound great. in fact way better than some of your other drums in your videos !
This would make a cool project kit! They sound awesome and would totally be worth working on and making more content with in my opinion
They actually sounded really good on that recording! Loved the tom-sounds.
Although it seems way to non-flexible with the pretuned heads, cool kit to have in a collection:).
I did not expect the sound! Whaaaaaat, how unexpectedly good sounding!
Keep it up man. Love the videos!

Guess you're revamping the drums 😅 great sound in the end and great bit of drumming history! Like others have said, those parts of history are really interesting, so keep those up! Cheers! 🤘
That drum got very nice 70’s/80’s sound. I pretty sure you will be getting a lot offers on that drum very soon. That kick drum is pure punch

That music track sounded like it came from the chase scene of an episode of "Hunter," but your drumming was perfectly suited and very entertaining. Plus, you made those toms sound quite amazing. (I'd be tempted to affix some eyes above each tom's "mouth". LOL)
thats like most 80's sounding drumset ive ever heard :D instantly reminded stuff like Knight Rider theme and stuff
