Avengers Campus: The Worst Land Disney’s Ever Built

  • Wtf was Disney thinking??
Walt Disney Studios in Paris just opened up part 1 of their massive expansion plans to upgrade the park, and it came in the form of Avengers Campus- a large Marvel themed area featuring two attractions. Sounds pretty good right? Except the land shares no resemblance to any of the films, both rides in the area suck, and there's barely any Avengers presence in sight. Surely everyone will still love it, right? ....right?

This is definitely the dark ages for Disney Parks fans. The fact that the parks continue to be very popular despite the relentless compromises, shows how powerful nostalgia is. However, this is a double edged sword because if Disney maintains these expensive, low standards indefinitely and starts experiencing a decline in guests, it might be hard to build interest again. That's not even counting the more affordable and higher standards presently coming from Universal.

Complete agree. A lot of this is people who have no original ideas. All of this is stuff we’ve seen before or just some dumb rebranding (splash mountain).
Disney was best when they created their original stuff instead of just leeching on something existing. Think Haunted Mansion, Pirates, tower of terror, etc. hell, the best ride in *tomorrowland* is 40+ years old.
Rise of the resistance is great, but that’s the one exception. All their new rides are not memorable, at least for good reasons. Guardians doesn’t count, since it’s just a rebrand.

i remember the first i went to disneyland paris and went on phantom manor. i was mesmerized with the effects and even now im still blown away by some of the illusions there and only a few years ago i really understood how they actually worked and even now im still a bit confused about it, if phantom manor or the haunted mansion were built in this era we wouldnt have the stretching room like we do now, we would have a set of screens that show ïllusions and effects", we wouldn't have the pepperghosts in the ball room, we'd have a set of projectors projecting the ghosts or a screen with ghosts. my point is disney engineers spent day and night to make effects that would blow our minds decades later and they spared no expense, in any form to the point that even now for most people its a complete mystery how disney is able to make ghosts appear, and then i look at this and there's no mystery to it cause everything is on a screen and it doesnt even look good. billions of dollars were spent so we can sit in a carridge going from screen to screen. i dont even care about disney anymore so thanks, bobbo, for ruining what so many people loved with greed and laziness.

I guess Disney's feeling is that "people look at screens all the time anyway" - so let's make everything a screen. Theme parks should be a break from the screens! Immersed in a fantasy world. The best dark rides I've been on had no screens in sight (such as Terror Tomb at Chessington World of Adventures..RIP... or, can't remember the name of it, the flat ride/dark ride hybrid at Drayton Manor which appeared to spin you upside down in a haunted chapel. And yes, Phantom Manor). Making everything screen based is an insult to park-goers intelligence.

From what I've seen online of both areas, both Paris and LA, the biggest problem to me is the initial concept of presenting the Avengers (and all adjacent characters) in a real-world environment. That very choice, to make it appear as the avengers are real and you are walking around some headquarters-esque area, means that any building style needs to be rooted in realism as well. The result is that the facades can not make bold choices in style, particularly when concerned with the more "modern" areas. Go all in on Stark-tech and it will look like the future, instead advanced present day. Even building Stark Tower would not prevent that; it would look like a generic sleek tower with an A stamped on it (albe it recognisable from the movies). Basically, the concept of Avengers campus suffers from the same problems that the Studio theme has; by making it look realistic it automatically looks non-inspired.
It is a shame though, because there are a lot more ways to showcase Marvel without falling for this trap. Like you said, any outlandish area from the movies. But you can also go to a former Stark industrial complex in the 90's. Have the brick industrial styled buildings with old weathered posters from ye olden days (like Mission Equipment store currently has) and build on that.
Have a secret laboratory with Mr Stark on pre-recorded messages only for the 'rider' to discover Hydra has laid root and thus they need to destroy it.
You can have Capt. Marvel show up with younger Fury (akin to first Capt. Marvel movie) and build a story on that.
Heck, I'm pretty sure you can bring in the Guardians of the Galaxy with a weird time travel story "Are we back in time? On earth?" Because it's set in a fixed style the Imagineers can go all out with theme and style while not having to worry about continuity of possibly dying characters.
But alas, that is not where we went. It's a shame that after all that money has been spend to upgrade the area, it has improved so little.

Walt built his park to be something truly inspiring. And for a long time the company continued that. Attractions like Horizons, Spaceship Earth, Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain, Indiana Jones... etc, all proved that the parks could still live on after Walt and do great things. But Eiger decided that the parks only exist to sell merchandise and promote Disney IPs. And Chapek decided that the purpose of the parks was to do that same thing but put zero effort into it.
This company brought us some of the greatest attractions and theme park lands of all time. But their recent work fully sucks. This is really disappointing. I'll stick with Herschend, Universal and SeaWorld for now. I'm not ready to be done with Disney parks forever just yet because I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain (for now) and other such attractions. But this is seriously disappointing.

Avengers Campus highlights pretty much everything I hate about the current trend of management: half-assed attractions that basically serve as ride-through billboards for IPs released within the last 10 years, cutting corners on services while charging exorbitant prices for them, yet people somehow still eat it up and defend it.

The fact that they removed the immersive and charming Bugsland… where you literally feel as small as a bug walking through tall grass/clovers with lush green everywhere and the occasional (oversized) human objects scattered throughout the area… for a boring uninspired area with generic concrete flooring, concrete buildings, and wide open spaces of nothing… I’m heartbroken.
Even the music in bugsland made you happy, because it was the familiar, iconic, and whimsical score from Randy Newman. Now it’s another (admittedly) iconic score… but mixed with generic hero style music… it just doesn’t feel alive anymore.

I especially like how every new Disney coaster is themed to space because having multiple space mountains in the same resort makes loads of sense. The ride so nice they built it twice....except with tv screens of generic action sequences that are the quality of a 00s plasma screen. I absolutely love that the Pym's Test Kitchen here looks in no way like the cafeteria of my high school or one of those McDonald's that tries to look like a hip café. Kudos on the Stark Factory which is clearly themed to Bayonne NJ.

Your take is spot on. Chapek’s continued monetization of the parks will be Disney’s undoing.
The budget cutting is out of control. That combined with the nickel and dime mentality they have adopted in the parks just shows that Chapek is all about the bottom line.
They forced Joe Rohde into retirement. That was the beginning of the end for Disney Imagineering.
The Disney philosophy now seem to he to do everything on the cheap. Copy lands in multiple parks.
Nothing original. The highest quality product for the smallest cost.
Disney is relying on the brand to draw people in. It will work once because after seeing how bad the parks are getting, people won’t come back.

Just because they buy up a franchise or a media company, doesn't mean we associate it with Disney. Disney used to have an animation style, a body of their own works, and all the creative infrastructure in their parks to support those. When you go to Disney you know the songs, the characters, the feeling of the park. Now, they bought up all these companies that are not consistent with their image and they slammed them into their parks as an after thought and tried to make them fit. It was never going to work.

Here's the thing: The reason why Disney doesn't use any of the Spiderman villains or the more marketable characters from the MCU in Avengers Campus is because they don't have the rights to them. Before Disney bought Marvel, Marvel entered a perpetual licensing deal with Universal Studios to use the Marvel characters at their parks. So the only place you can see Captain America or Thor is at a Universal park, not a Disney one.

Now I understand, needing to have IP every now and then, but honestly, let’s take a look at some of the best rides that were made without an IP like the haunted mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean, the jungle cruise. Instead of making marvel land, or even Star Wars land, they could’ve easily built, something different and new that didn’t have necessarily all IP.

The thing is, despite how lackluster these new Disney changes have been, Disney is still recording record profits. At this point they know that they can do anything and no matter how much people complain, they'll still visit the parks. And it's true, Genie+ is a total cash grab that requires immense planning to use, they've stripped away most of the perks of staying on property like extra magic hours, watered down many attractions, they got rid of the Magical Express, and raised the prices again and again. And despite all this the parks are filled to capacity to the point where there is no longer a slow season. As long as Chapek can bring in money, they don't really care what happens to the overall experience.
