  • Hollywood Studios has thrilled visitors for over 30 years with its incredible rides and experiences, and continues to step up their game with new, immersive additions that keep people coming back for me. For that reason, it is one of the most popular theme parks in the world, and arguably has the best attraction line up at the entire Walt Disney World resort. However that does not mean this park is without its flaws- join us as we look at the pros and cons of Disney's movie theme park!

    Rope dropping Hollywood Studios is wild because you basically have to gamble on which of the big rides will actually be open and it's often only one of them and if you didn't pick right, you just lost your entire advantage to coming in at opening

      @VestedUTuber Před 7 měsíci +4

      I'd argue this isn't really one you'd want to rope drop, especially if you're going to Galaxy's Edge as many of the attractions there are reservation-based. Your best bet is to go during the off-season.

    I've been going to Hollywood Studios every year since 2010, and it really changed a lot. I remember that my family used to buy a hopper to go to HS and then finish the night at Epcot, and it was possible to ride every major ride at both parks!
    Totally agree with you about the theming being not too much consistent, that is exactly why, imo, Animal Kingdom is the best WDW park. Most consistent themeing, good rides (even though there arent a lot), and just a beautiful great park to walk around

      I would love to see them give the Muppets some love. They could bring life to that area so easily and cheaply. Keep Muppet Vision 3D as is. They just did a refresh including new seats and new projecton mapping, so the show is in good shape. Open that huge store again and pack it with Muppet Merch. Turn Mama MelRose's into a Swedish Chef Character Dining Location. Add some walk around characters that play freely in the area - they should still have all of the costumes in storage somewhere. And mostly, they should claim the Star Tours simulator as part of Muppet Courtyard. Turn it into "Pigs in Space" or "The Electric Mayhem's Wild Adventure".It sits right behind Pizza Rizzo and they could easily move the entrace to the other side of the building - like they did with the entrance of Toy Story Mania. And have a "Muppet's Festival of Dancing Lights" at Christmas - it would be fun seeing a light show to Miss Piggy singing Santa Baby. They could do so much so easily to fix that forgotten part of the park. They own the Muppets - they need to use them!

    IMO the park has too many e-ticket style rides, with not enough filler. The balance is way off, hence why most rides have crazy long lines. I don't know if adding new areas would help with that problem, unless they only added smaller rides, but then what's the point in doing that?! 🤷‍♀️😆
    It's like they need to add some smaller rides to the current areas.
    Oh and for me Star Tours is a must ride over Smugglers Run. SR is great for the theming, but I never bother to ride it more than once, even when it's walk on. ST for me is absolutely fantastic!

    Hollywood studios is by far my least favorite park at disney world. Don't get me wrong, stuff like fantasmic or the hollywood tower of terror are amazing, but the lines are so so so so so long its not even worth it. This is definitely most evident in toy story land and star wars land, with toy story land having like 30-40 minute waits for a flat ride w a 2 minute cycle (aliens flying saucers.) Disney has consistently been replacing old rides at this park which means: if you have nostalgia for it, that's gone, the park capacity is horrible, and everyone wants to go to the park because it's all new stuff. Add all this with the lack of shade and generally pretty boring queues, i would only go here if you have parkhopper tickets and i would only go on the old rides (muppets, tower, rock n roll, star tours) so you're not waiting in hot sweaty lines all day.

    Disney will keep the muppet area because they keep renovating muppetvision 3D, and I have some ideas on how to improve the area:
    Add a gravity group style family wooden coaster like Oscar’s wacky taxi and theme it to gonzo the great. They could use titan track if the Florida heat is too much.
    Heck, an rmc family coaster or wild moose would fit, but Disney and rmc partnering up is a pipe dream.
    Use the parking lot behind the park for room for the coaster. Add a parking garage if needed.
    Use the old star tours building for the muppets great movie ride, which was supposed to be a great movie ride parody, but was scrapped in the 90s.
    Add a Swedish chef restaraunt that serves Swedish meatballs. It would be a money printer.
    Add a live or animatronic muppet show. It could be like an episode of the muppet show, just not prerecorded.
    Honestly I’m biased because I love the muppet area lol.

    Have to disagree that this park has gotten better in terms of theming. You said that in its beginning it was a park that was figuring out its identity and what it was to become. I feel like that’s its problem now: it doesn’t know what its identity is. It’s got the Hollywood theming for most of the park, but also Star Wars and Toy Story lands thrown in for some reason. As you alluded, California Adventure suffers the same identity crisis, and I fear that Epcot is heading in that direction too.

    • @sirbossk
      @sirbossk Před 7 měsíci

      Big agree. The park went from cohesive but thin on rides to a mess but with a bunch of rides, just like California Adventure. And they could've easily had both if they put in the work. Really disappointing because having their parks be cohesive experiences is one of the main differentiating factors between Disney and every other park chain. Without that it's just whatever.

      @@JakeTerch I somewhat get that, but the whole theming, at least of Galaxy's Edge, is not that you are in the *movie* but rather you are actually in the world of another planet. One of the most interesting things about Hollywood Studios is that Michael Eisner stole the studio tour idea from the group that pitched and had started building Universal Studios with the idea. Disney/MGM tried to kill Universal with their own idea before they could open. But no one liked MGM’s studio tour, and it quickly died and gave way to this weirdly arranged and somewhat poorly planned park.

    I finally got to visit the Sci-Fi restaurant on my trip back in September and not only is the atmosphere really fun, I thought the food was pretty good too. Its not anything super fancy food wise but it was tasty (the milkshake was AMAZING) and I had an awesome time there. The service was very good too! You guys should try it out on your next visit but make sure you get a reservation early because that one does fill up pretty fast (I worked with a travel agent for my trip and she was able to get me a lunch reservation). I agree with some of your points here but I've been to HS several times over the last few years and I've always had fun there. I really enjoy Toy Story Land and think Slinky is a cute little coaster (I love the Swirling Saucers and Toy Story Mania) but I don't usually spend a lot of time in the Star Wars area as I'm not a big fan. I have ridden both Smuggler's Run and ROTR and while fun, I don't really need to ride either of them more than once on a trip (I didn't even ride Smugglers on my last trip and I actually got lucky and caught ROTR when it only had about a 20 minute standby wait!). I would rather the park keep more options available for those of us who aren't big SW fans than for them to make that land even bigger or have it take over another area like the Muppets area. I also visited the One Man's Dream exhibit on my last trip and thought that was SUPER cool and fascinating (wish I could have seen the movie that went along with it but I didn't have time). I don't know...I enjoy HS and have had fun every time I've gone there so I'm fine with them not changing things too much for right now. It does get super hot in that park though so I make sure I have my wetting cloth thing with me so I have a way to cool off if I happen to be there in the afternoon (I tend to rope drop this park and then leave before it gets too hot). =)

If you add half of the back stage are between the Launch Bay and Rock’n’Rollercoaster, you have an area about 80% of the size of Toy Story. So that entire area could have a very nice area that I think could house the premier stage show for the park and a ride. So I definitely see that area in the cross hairs of the next IP infusion of the area. Any IP could work and I could see it having an East coast “Pixar Pier” area so any other Pixar characters could have a dedicated location for meet and greets. But I do see Hollywood Studios getting a new land in the next decade.

They own the Muppets - they need to use them!

    when I was there in 2019, I rode Tower of Terror, Rock'n Roller Coaster, Millenium Falcon and saw the Indiana Jones show. Theming is amazing of course, highly immersive but then I was like "Wait thats it? Those are all the interesting rides? (rise of the resistance was finished yet). For a guy who usually just interested in the thrills and coasters, its a bit of a letdown. Also for late summer on a weekday it was terribly crowded and everything was at least 50min. I liked the star wars area (main reason to even visit it) and tower of terror blew me away, but sadly thats it for me. Slinky Dog's line was crazy (over 80min) in full sun, for a family coaster I thought the long wait wasnt worth it.
    The car cinema restaurant look dope, too bad I missed it

    I’m sorry, but Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is in no way shape or form worthy of replacing the iconic Great Movie Ride which truly embodies what Hollywood Studios was originally meant to be(a park for the movies). That ride was badass and featured a ton of cool scenes from all time Hollywood classics that blow the doors off of any pointless crap on Runaway Railway.

  • @kevinbhieey9188
    @kevinbhieey9188 Před 7 měsíci +1

    It opened as Disney-MGM Studios, not just MGM Studios. And, man, was it garbage! Michael Eisner stole the original plans for Universal Studios Florida hoping that building all the attractions Universal was going to build - tram ride, sound effects show, stunt show, etc - would kill the new competitor. It almost did because Universal had to scrap most of their plans and fast-track new rides. But it almost killed Disney as well because the park literally opened with only two attractions - The Great Movie Ride and the tram thing. (I went for the first time two years later WHEN THEY HAD SEVEN ATTRACTIONS!!!) Because of the Tower of Terror, Sci Fi Dine-In Restaurant and Prime-Time Cafe, I've always had a soft spot in my black little heart for this place... and a really big black hole just knowing how little effort Disney has put into this park since 1989. It's going on 25 years and it's STILL not a full park (unless standing in line is how you want to spend half your day).
    While I agree with the comments on Sunset Blvd and Animation Courtyard and the general ride lineup, I need to STRONGLY disagree with the thumbs-up given Toy Story Land and Galaxy's Edge. All I see when I look at them are budget cuts. Both were meant to be far more elaborate and I notice that everywhere I look. The theming in TSL reminds me so much of It's A Bug's Land in DCA, but probably worse. Yes, it's better than Paris's version, but that doesn't make it good. It's just so cheap looking. The theming in the Toy Story Mania queue looks more expensive than what they did outside. And Galaxy's Edge doesn't feel like Star Wars. It feels Star Wars adjacent. And both have areas where all you see are trees! WTF is that???
    I did actually laugh when Taylor talked about doing "a loop" while still in the Sunset Blvd section. You CAN'T do a loop from there, and it's one of the worst design choices in any Disney park. Yeah, other parks have dead-ends: Disneyland had both Critter Country and Toontown for years. But they were/are fairly short dead-ends. The distance between Hollywood Blvd and the entrance to Tower of Terror is about a quarter of a mile! Part of the reason for this issue continuing is Toy Story Land's budget cuts. The land's original entrance was supposed to be via Animation Courtyard, with a Woody's Roundup-themed area between the Courtyard and the coaster. (Early concept art showed three better-defined themes: A Woody section near Animation Courtyard, a space-themed Buzz area near Galaxy's Edge, and Andy's backyard between the two.) The Roundup courtyard would've replaced a backstage building, but they still would've had to demolish at least one of the buildings in Animation Courtyard. The Little Mermaid/gift shop seems like the obvious choice, but I swear at one point they were talking about dumping the guest area of the former Animation building - which it still was at the time - so they could connect the Courtyard to the RnRC courtyard (now called Gower St). With the addition of the completely unnecessary Racing Academy nonsense, it certainly seemed like this was going to happen at some point - why add ANOTHER attraction to this ridiculous dead end?
    There's a little ray of hope, though. You know Imagineers desperately want to connect Star Tours to Galaxy's Edge - Star Tours is NOT going anywhere. Taylor's right otherwise, the New York section is on borrowed time. But just getting rid of Muppet Vision is questionable now that it just got a major update. Considering the big rumor for this park right now is a Muppets Mayhem retheme of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, it would make sense for Muppet Vision to just take over that Cars atrocity. Would it be the best thing to move an ancient 4D movie attraction? Of course not, but how often does Disney do something that's in its guests' best interest? Retheming these attractions will be seen as a cheap way to get new attractions - and a nice new themed land. The Hollywood theming here is a much-better fit for the Muppets, and Disney is FINALLY realizing that people love them (Muppets Mayhem has a 95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes). PizzeRizzo will probably not make the cut, but it's about time they got a Meet 'n' Greet.
    Taylor probably also inadvertently nailed the future of Galaxy's Edge, in Orlando at least. This version and Anaheim's both have expansion pads behind the Millennium Falcon ride, so that space is ready for some cloning. But Orlando has far more space, with not only New York, but also the large forest north of Galaxy's Edge's main path. Perfect for a dueling Speeder Bike coaster. This sequence of events - rethemed ride, moved show, lightly-themed outdoor roller coaster that trades on Tron's popularity - that's a Bob Iger wet dream. "New land! New coasters! We'll claim we're going to spend a lot on it but we won't!" The Imagineers will be excited as well because expanding Star Tours' Endor theming will give Star Wars nerds the "real" location they've always wanted. They can even call this end Endor, which keeps Star Tours outside the Galaxy's Edge theme. Could they do better? Of course. Will they? Doubtful.

    I have a very different take on this park. I don't like the direction it has taken because the park just isn't about anything. This is the ultimate random hodgepodge park now. Calling it "Hollywood Studios" is being a little loose with the language.
    I'm personally very bitter that The Great Movie Ride is gone, it's my highest ranked defunct attraction of any kind. I find Runaway Railway is poor replacement and uses the annoying version of Mickey and friends. Tower of Terror is definitely the best thing at the park now and it makes more sense for this park than anything at Galaxy's Edge. If they get rid of TOT orv retheme it to Guardians then I think I'll be done visiting this park.
    I know this is just my opinion so everyone is free to disagree. I feel the same way about EPCOT and definitely prefer that park as it was back in the days of Horizons and World of Motion. These two parks (as well as DCA) seem to be parks that Disney simply doesn't like the idea of their themes. They don't like the idea that a park is about something other than just being a poorly organized advertising fair for their IPs.

    I just got back from going to Disney World for the first time. I can honestly say it was the most disappointing experience of my life. I'm a huge fan of the Tron franchise so I was beyond excited to experience the ride at magic kingdom. Surprise! You need to sign up for a queue at 7am that morning which fills up after 15 minutes. Or, you could pay $20 for a lightning pass which also requires another $20 for genie+, for each. This sucked considering I paid $300 total for admission tickets for my wife and I. Disney World is a joke. I spent a fortune just for the privilege of walking around through gift shops.

Where the original ideas for that parks are mixed with random IP and it just does not work for me. Rant incoming..... Hollywood Studios (Forever MGM), used to be the movie park, which was to directly compete with Universal Studios right down the road. Now though, ALL Disney theme parks are the "ride the movies" park because that's all they do now. Create rides based on Movies or retheme rides that were once original creations into movie based rides, Like Buzz Lightyear, Frozen and Finding Nemo did to Delta Dream flight, Maelstrom and The Seas pavilion. Disney literally took Universals tagline of "ride the movies" and that's all they do now. So, having a specific park dedicated to movies doesn't even make sense at Disney anymore. The Disney theme parks here in Orlando should just be called "Walt Disney World Studios" at this point.

    I also think Rise of the Resistance is overrated. I was so excited to ride it, but more often than not it has issues….it’s also a very ‘clean’ environment….which I guess fits for Kylo and friends….but I find it too bland. I’d love to see a ride like this loaded with animatronics and set pieces and special effects.
