Tennessee Titans MUST FIX the Middle: Best Linebacker Fits & Top Defensive Line Options in NFL Draft

  • The Tennessee Titans have big needs on defense including linebacker and defensive line and while they shouldn't be drafting those positions early in the 2024 NFL Draft, it would still be smart to add at those spots at some point. First, the top linebackers could be options, but taking them so early could be risky. Also, there are linebackers later in the draft that could fit the profile of what the Titans' defense is looking for. Finally, there are different types of defensive linemen available and the Titans should look to add one of each.

    Trotter ran a 4.6, similar to David Long but actually bigger. If that guy isn't a mid round pick something is wrong with your analysis. An athletic guy who can cover is EXACTLY what we lack. He is the opposite of Murray (who you would draft again since you are enamored with an extra 10 pounds and speed) because he has great instincts. Gibbons might be our best strong LB and despite his 4.8 speed also has instincts and is actually decent ni coverage as well as the run. Gibbons was the 30th ranked LB per PFF and equally good in run and pass.

    Are there any top level teams without at least one high level LB? My description if strong adn weak LB is the weak is the cover guy who stays on the field all the time. Thumper guys are easy to find. Guys that can do it all and stay on the field are not. ou usually DO NOT find those guys in the 6th round. Our need isn't just a decent body, it is finding a guy who is instinctual and solid in all phases (run, coverage and pass rush). You give him the green dot. I did think he was very quick between the hashes, good functional speed. He was slippery against blocks and was very instinctive to boot. It's a situation that could happen again where a guy doesn't look like a great athlete at least on the surface, but the deep dive showed there was a lot to work with.

    Here we go with the explanation of 0 tech, 3 tech and such. Only problem is teams use a NT on what, 25% of the snaps? So you DRAFT another "3 tech" to play on passing downs who would be out there 75% of the time. Insane lack of awareness of situational football. Autry plyed inside on PASSING situations. Was he a NT? Unreal! Yes, if you can get a DT that is a pass rush strength YOU DO IT. Klug played 7 years in that role. Oh, Tart was as good if not better rushing the passer but since he came to the team Tyler has referred to him as a run stopping NT. In fact, the Titans have always preferred a "0 tech" that is more than a blob run stuffer. NT are not 2 down guys, more like one down guys and don't see the fieold in critical parts of the game except to stop the run.

    • @LockedOnTitans
      @LockedOnTitans  Před měsícem

      Autry is a DE. He played outside on early downs and kicked in on passing downs. But you didn’t know that obviously.

    • @mikegustafson58
      @mikegustafson58 Před měsícem

      @@LockedOnTitans I do know that but you are clueless and still think teams have a NT who plays like a NT did decades ago. The ignorance is astounding. My point on Autry is to get a DT that can line up there ALL THE TIME. Who can stop the run AND provide some pass rush and on top of that Simmons is a beast against the run as a 3 tech. Your whole perspective is plain ignorant. Teams might have some blob immovable NT like guy on the team who they utilize in short yardage and such. On top of that you seem to think having another Simmonsis a bad thing for some ignorant reason. Are you really that ignorant?

  • @mikegustafson58
    @mikegustafson58 Před měsícem +1

    Not to belabor the point but this is such a poor recognition of how DL is played I'll point it out. The Steelers had one of the best NTs in NFL history in Hampton for years. Wilfork for NE was another. Who played there for the Steelers ((2016-2019)? Hargave. A 6'2 300 pound guy, who was a PASS RUSHER (86.5) NOT A run stuffer (51.4). Hayward who is their version of Simmons. Then he went to the Eagles and played alongside Fletcher Cox (2020-22). So yea, the "NT" might normally be the better run stopper, but they aren't guys who just do that and come off the field all the time. Not to mention we ARE NOT a traditional 3-4 defense. We spend 75% or more of the time in a four man front. To make thigns even more ridiclous is Simmons isn't some light weight gap penetrator. He is a beast against the run.

    • @MrCorner21
      @MrCorner21 Před měsícem +2

      A lot of 3-4 defenses spend plenty of time in the nickel, but when you have Simmons and Autry then nickel pass rush is taken care of. We don't need our NT to be Hargrave...yeah it would be nice lol, but as you said, Simmons excels in both areas. And ideally, we find a Nico replacement at the DE spot

    • @mikegustafson58
      @mikegustafson58 Před měsícem

      @@MrCorner21 You know 3-4 means you have 4 LBs right? So it is basically impossible to be in 3-4 and nickel (replace a LB with a DB). And my point is we DO NOT HAVE a NT. People call the guy who who is the better run stopper the NT but the four man from alignment doesn't always have a guy as a zero gap (75% or more there is no zero gap guy). Not to mention the GAP concept, of taking up blockers for the LBs is antiquated. We don't have a 5 tech either. We basically use two DTs and two DEs. Strong side DE on early down is a guy like Autry for more run support. 3-4,is actually a bigger alignment overall with DEs as OLBs and is horrible against the pass.

    • @MrCorner21
      @MrCorner21 Před měsícem

      @@mikegustafson58 lol I played football in college, 4 year starter...I know how a 3-4 front works my guy. This isn't 2003 anymore where you prioritize the NT position. As you said, we spent the majority of the time in a 4-man front...it was still 3-4 personnel, but we went with 4 rushers so our backers could focus more on coverage than on blitzing. Maybe that changes with the new regime, but regardless...we have found suitable NTs in the past from off the scrap heap. We'll be fine my man. I agree about 5 technique... I'd love Robinson from Mizzou at that spot

    • @mikegustafson58
      @mikegustafson58 Před měsícem

      @@MrCorner21 no, it isn't 4-3 personnel and Landry and Key are not linebackers they are pure edge. They drop back in coverage only to confuse the QB and allow others to blitz which confuses blocking assignments. Best explanation is that NT is no longer a position but a geographical location your best run defender can play in special situations. Tyler is so focused on 1,3,5 technique, which is obsolete. He was arguing getting another stud DT which is insane. That same lack of awareness had fans not wanting to draft Aaron Donald because we had Casey. Except this is even worse logic because Simmons is an immovable object against the run himself. Either way we rarely are in 5 personnel and play a four man for 90% of the time. We might have a DT "geographically" located on the 0 or 1 but even that is rare. Tart wasn't a flipping NT. Sure when we ran a legit 3--4 under Dick LeBeau we had a slug NT. Later under Pees DeQuan Jones. But the defense has changed almost to a full 4-2-5 for the vast number of snaps. So you don't calibrate your personnel on only 25% of the snaps and maybe you keep on large DT for those specific situations. .Now if you were a team like the Steelers running a full 3-3 you would have depth at NT. Not really a priority today. Not to mention teams that do use big guys want guys that can actually move well for their size so they are not a one trick pony.
