I viewed college the wrong way

  • College isn't for everyone, but we will never know truly unless you truly asses your values, your goals, and what you want out of your experiences. In my case, college is worth while, but for you it might be different.
it took me a couple years to learn a lesson that had been laid out Infront of me, but I learned it, thankfully.

My suggestion as a graduate: DON’T GO TO COLLEGE WITHOUT A PLAN!!!!!
Seriously, don’t just pick a degree on the fly and hope you’ll end up liking it. College is supposed to prepare you for the rest of your life, so make sure you know what you wanna do before throwing thousands of dollars at your school. Consider learning a trade, consider interning, and only go to college if you’re SURE you’ll be happy with the path it leads you down.

I wish I was able to take like a year before I went to college, felt like it would've helped me tremendously to have taking a second to really think about what I would end up doing as a career but in California if you have decent grades you get a perry good sum of money for college but only if you right after high school and like 6 weeks into college life I fell apart in every aspect. And now it feels like I'm scrambling to figure out what I'm gonna do.

i feel like college’s gameplay is a bit bland, but the characters are amazing so far, and I’ve only been playing for a few months.

(for context I've been threw 2 yrs of community college and after this semester 2 yrs of university, I need an extra year here to get my degree here tho bc I was in a general tech degree at community college so a lotta classes didn't count to the degree after transferring like film classes)
I feel that as an it major I just have no social life bc autism. I went to community college for 2 yrs and that was fully online bc covid and while the academic experience was much better bc prof care about you and what they teach more (like even a boring class like math will have profs who did that thing for a living or still do so they are really passionate about it) whereas in uni it's in person bc the college wants on campus housing money regardless of the pandemic. I don't like that kinda greed but the social experience is SO much better than high school.
profs here at uni also suck. They either don't care about what they teach or don't know what they are teaching. Lotta times they feel straight outta hell. Getting a good professor here is like finding a needle in a haystack. Idk if it's bc I go to Towson, cheap uni in Maryland or if this is a universal thing.
My it classes are easy while comp sci is really hard so I'm glad for my choice there but I hear other students say they love their classes and have a blast but I don't care for mine. They feel like average boring college classes with assignments, midterms and finals just less stressful and more chill. Kinda wish I was actually doing something creative (like around 8:00 this was mentioned) like graphic design, film or game design with projects and a lotta hands on time but I get scared I don't have the skills to do that as a major.
I mean each one has their issues. Film, I don't like movies but I like CZcams content. I like narratives and writing stories even if difficult I just don't like the long nature of films. I like video editing but more for yt videos not films. I feel like the difference in mediums would be an issue. I used to dapple in broadcasting. I have a crazy good influencer like voice perfect for hosting things and public speaking class was a blast. I just have really bad anxiety which makes it difficult. I also feel that getting a film degree for CZcams is dumb since you can do CZcams without a degree. You don't need one to blow up. You just need the right video to pop off randomly. Yeah you can learn some things but you can get the same info in CZcams vids that are more tailored to the media here compared to film where your making movies. unless u wanna make short films ig but then u prob want into the film industry too.
Game design is a degree I've heard you feel like you have to be good at everything with making games so your better off getting a degree in something specific. Although with the industry issues with layoffs and corporate greed it's really not a good idea.
Graphic design I really enjoyed doing in high school. I wasn't good at drawing or a lotta hands on art mediums but I never felt really good at graphic design where it's a thing I should pursue. Just kinda meh. So I feel like it would be hard bc that.
I picked it bc I looked at the classes and thought "this seems like stuff I would mostly like and doesn't seem hard" never picked a track, I'm doing electives but idk if I made the right choice.
(For job context I'm lucky to have parents that would rather want me focusing on academics then having to also get a job on top of that so I've never worked in my life yet, this also makes college feel like I have to be here mentioned around 9:00, little late on that timestamp btw) No clue what I wanna do but I don't think I wanna be a cog in a corporate machine that does the same boring office job thing every day. I can appreciate the consistency tho but for the rest of my life, Nah. I like hands on projects like the things with art stuff I talked about earlier. That plus the job market feeling impossible to enter bc entry level jobs require 4 yrs experience that I get through jobs, make that make sense and feeling like I have nothing for a resume bc how college went bc I'm sure I do. Makes the transition outta college to the job world after next school year really scary for me. Although transitioning is hard with autism. Going from middle school to high school was rough for me when it was easy for everyone else. I try to focus on the degree and classes in the moment to help but it also feels like there's no motivation here at the same time.
The one thing I found similar in community college and uni is advising sucks. In cc they don't know what classes mean or do so I never found them helpful although my advisor was also my accommodations specialist so maybe that's why. While at uni they feel like they are trying to get you to stay longer and waste more money than actually help you. Like they would say you need 3 electives to graduate when you actually need 4 hoping you never notice, walk across the graduation stage to find out you need one more class to graduate, but to live on campus bc u live so far u can't commute conveniently, you need 12 credits minimum so BAM! they just got a lot more money from you. uni loves milking you for money and all the unnecessary fees. Cc actually cares about you.

As someone who has dreams of being a filmmaker but didn't listen to their gf and go to college this year because I didn't think it was going to be worth it this video hit close to home hard and came at the perfect time. Hell I even played splatoon myself while listening to this.

This video showed up right when I started thinking of dropping out because I was thinking the same things. I think it’s a waste of time and I don’t think anything would help in wanting to do youtube. Now I want to look into what majors could help me that I didn’t realize before

Nothing made me appreciate what you can get out of a college education more than missing out on it. I'd be too powerful with some calculus.

I think that college in general, is more general than "is it good, or is ti bad?"
I find it is a little bit of both. While getting a degree may not be for everyone, the upside of college is that you can learn things regardless of whether you want a degree or not. An example is that in college, I relearned the basics of piano. I feel it was the most useful class I had ever taken, but I'm not the kind of person who can stand going to college for years to get a degree. I would say that for some people it is more worth it than others.
Also, never feel ashamed if you never really know what you want to do, becuase wanting to do one thing for the rest of your life is what boring, bland people like doing. Many of the most interesting people I have known hardly ever know what they want to do the rest of their lives, if they had to choose only one thing. Many of them switch careers eventually.

I understand how the channel host feels, college mostly isn't needed depending on the field. Most things can be self tough or can be learn from CZcams. College is mostly for individual who want to preform that profession for the rest of their years.
College is mostly for degree that are tangible such as, law, dentistry, doctor / pharmaceutical, etc etc. Trade collage can also be a option if the union is something someone would like to go that route.
Personally I do not believe that being a CZcamsr is the correct way to make a living as a full time job, unless one has something to fund what the individual is doing such as traveling, self improvement videos, or how to guide such as building / manufacturing.
Plus even the massive Splatoon players that you can think of does not play Splatoon full time maybe Dude but I believe outside of him I do not believe there is anyone doing Splatoon content creation full time.

    • @pie_718
      @pie_718  Před 6 měsíci

This. This is the main reason why I haven't decided to drop out yet, yt varies so much between different channels and it isn't always guaranteed. Even a game like Splatoon isn't profitable because it's not really main stream. So I need to find what else I could do with the skills that I have for professional work.

Yeah college isn't supposed to be a end all be all type of deal. You have other opportunities other than college.
