If you ask someone else, you might get an opinion that Scotty did play all the muted notes but some of them were simply not captured by the microphone due to recording technics being yet far from what we're used to these days. For me that's not so obvious. Because, first, Sam Phillips was a pretty skilled producer, then I would also expect notes to be quieter but not completely missing. Also, if something was actually played but not captured, would you like to guess the player's intentions or to get close to what you can actually hear? I usually go for the latter, because in the end it's exactly what we love, when it comes to those original recordings.
Absolutely correct, but Scotty always cites Chet, so it's fingerpicking all the way. The move on the 2nd verse g to g sharp and g flat is pure Chet. This is a complex piece and Scotty messes up the turnaround after the 2nd solo, but that's 50s rockabilly ❤️

But you can still teach notes, and it's a prerequisite for the rest.
