The Capitol "Viking" is NOT dressed as a Viking

  • We need to talk about this creature.
He's been described as "Viking" and "dressed as a Viking" by several news outlets, but he's blatantly not dressed as a Viking. So, what do his clothes really signify?
Let's take a slightly deeper dive into the whole affair, what it means, where it really comes from, and why we need to respect its roots.

Thank you for talking about the buffalo cap. It was frustrating to see that hat, half-certainly recognizing it as a misappropriation of First Nations culture, and then having every single person who reported on it referring to it as a "furry viking hat". And, no, wearing the buffalo cap is not considered stolen valor here in the US. Just like all those Victoria Secret models tromping around in war bonnets during a fashion show a few years back (or any number of dubious Halloween costumes) is not considered stolen valor. The laws, to my understanding, only cover the active American military and police forces.

Thank you for talking about the origins of his headpiece. I knew of the feather bonnets, but was less aware of the origins of this person.
The one news story I remember describing it as more than “furry headpiece” referred to it as bearskin, which would have been another layer of old Norse co-op as implying a beserker. But it being an appropriated Native American bonnet is definitely a lot worse. :( and who knows? He could have meant it as an all-of-the-above thing. It’s not like a-holes care about the number of cultures they steal from.

I teach archaeology and biological anthropology courses at a community college in Texas. Your discussion of white nationalism and racism is a theme that is addressed in both courses, from different angles (but the racists don't come out well in either case). I recognized exactly what that clown was doing the moment I saw him, and when he said he was "honoring the Navajo," I was absolutely sick. Anyway, this archaeology prof (lowercase p) appreciates your channel and what you do, and especially this video. Cheers!

Yeah. Thank you for the video and stating as such. I'm always horrified/disgusted at the way Nazi thugs steal the regalia and aesthetics of various cultures while simultaneously stating just how much they hate those people and their entire way of life. I'm just so tired of white supremacists, both in general and also in the way that people keep saying that these thugs are Viking, when they're so clearly _not_ and just...it's frustrating. It's frustrating as someone who genuinely worships Odin and Loki and the Norse gods, and so am constantly being told to be careful about how to display my symbols because of White Supremacists, instead of White Supremacists being told to fuck off and get away from such symbols and all.
I don't know. Thank you for the video, it's amazing as always, and I'll have to look into more of those stories you mentioned. Hopefully we've faced a turning point where more people realize they have to shut down white supremacy rather than ignoring it, but who knows.
