    i use this song as my warm up every day and I think it sounds different every day which is crazy..I have heard this played so many ways, so many styles, recognizable, but different...I guess if music is a language, then as with spoke words, we all have our own accent that makes it our own

      Absolutely! I hope this vid gave ya something new to work with too! One of my favorite things to do is learn different live versions of the same tune from the same artists. It really helps understand their “vocab” and spill over into mine.

      She knew keys/pitch just fine probably.. Singing it in C is harder. People tune down to fit their vocal range .I know I do. Most blues guitarists tune down..Nashville guitarists tuned down also for many reasons - one being to sing easier.@@kostringworks

    There are hundreds of videos on CZcams using the generic label "Travis-Picking" which is a complete joke; Elizabeth Cotten (and a host of other Folk/Blues players) played finger style (inc alt-bass/treble picking) long before Merle Travis. Also Merle Travis only ever used one finger, so it's ludicrous to refer to finger style/fingerpicking as "Travis Picking" - how did the myth ever get started I wonder?

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Dude I have had this EXACT idea for a video. It baffles me how far the “travis picking” thing has gone from how he played. My guess is melbay called some exercise in a book that and then the fire spread. Total guess though. I should make this vid.

    • @Lowdenjim
      @Lowdenjim Před 8 měsíci

      @@kostringworks It is testimony to the sheer power of CZcams, the internet and social media generally in the spreading of misinformation and so many lies. When I started playing guitar and then soon wanting to play finger style based on the wonderful players I knew back then I'd never heard of Merle Travis and certainly would not have wanted to use only one finger. Freight Train was a favourite song of mine when I heard it back in about 1955 (before I heard of Elvis even!) and at school in the early 60's a friend taught me how to play St James Infirmary Blues - he could play that style. Another friend was steeped in the music of Black American Blues singers and somehow got hold of records not even released here in the UK! So many of them came over from the US in 1962 and influenced members of the Stones, Beatles, Animals etc. We had live bands performing locally every week - doing blues and R&B covers - of Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Brownie McGhee, John Lee Hooker, Howling Wolf etc. I wonder if Travis appeared on something like the Ed Sullivan show and the phrase started out life on Black & White TV to a mass White American audience - who knows? It's a mystery myth.... yeah - make that vid! Good luck.

      @jmorrisey79 Před 4 měsíci

      @@Lowdenjim that stuff happened long before CZcams and social media. Those coming into the equation certainly does cause information to spread quicker.. but it's not the cause. It only worsened an existing problem.

    • @Lowdenjim
      @Lowdenjim Před 4 měsíci

      @@jmorrisey79 You're right. I've been watching the excellent coverage of "Ain't Nobody's Dirty Business" by Fretboard Confidential (which is a great example of alt-bass finger picking) and thought how ludicrous it would be to refer to it as Travis-Picking given that Mississippi John Hurt pre-dated Merle Travis by 25 years! I doubt that Tim Berners Lee could possibly imagine how the WWW would become a vehicle for propaganda, misinformation often extending to even dangerous lies on such a large scale.
