  • Product review of the Camelbak Podium Chill. A great bottle but falls short on the most important part: thermal insulation. The comparison shows just how little the difference is between a regular bottle and some insulated bottles.

    Haven't done any real test but bought some cheap thermal bottle bags off ebay and they definitely kept our 2ltr bottles of pop cold for the best part of the day.

    What a great review! The bottle was properly tested and in return the review was really informative and helpful. Thanks!

    Main issue with this valve - even when it is looked while riding on harsh road the liquid is splashed on you frame and legs. Really annoying if you have sugar in it. All around area became sticky. Hate it. So i prefer elite insulated bottle with classic valve. At winter time I used regular steel thermos.

    Dumb question: what if you add ice to the CamelBak Podium Chill just as you did with the regular bottle, does it perform any better over time?

      Yes it does. That is what I do. The original poster of the video really missed it in his conclusions.

    Great review. On thing i would have liked to see is how the chill keeps the water with ice in it as well. Does it keep it from melting longer than a normal bottle? Or same results. Thanks

      Thanks :) Ice wasn't included since the tested Alfi Eco insulated bottle explicitly mention not to use ice in it and it's also not that consistent in testing. The ice can make the starting temperature lower, depending on the water temperature and amount of ice you add. After that it will follow more or less the same temperature curve. The bottles don't give you a noticeable difference in melting time, since the ice and water can freely transfer heat/cold inside the bottle. Also, heat transfer from the outside to the inside (between the Podium Chill and Ice) in the first 30min is only about 1,5 degrees in water temp. In my experience the ice cubes are already melted by that time.

      MTB.guide thank you for the very prompt and detailed reply. I just ordered one these chill podiums so I was curious about the results. Thanks again.

    Do you have a link to where or what I look up to get the bike mount or one that would fit it thanks

    Hi thanks for the Test, nice test, I 'd like add that, in real life outside there is also wind blowing to the bottle and accerelate the temperature losing as we ride, and may be Camelback will have more adventage to keep the temparature. Thanks

      Thanks, you have a valid point there that I didn't address in this video. I keep that in mind for future reviews ;)

    How about keeping the water warm and frozen free in winter?

    • @MTBguide
      @MTBguide  Před 3 lety +1

      Simply speaking, water cools and heats at the same rate. You can invert the charts to get an idea. I've never had frozen water with this bottle. I don't really ride below -10C for long periods of time for that to happen. Hands, feet and face hurt before the water has a chance to freeze.

    But.. for this test why not put cool water in.. i mean that is what the bottle is claiming. Keep cool water cool twice as long, not lukewarm water.

    Chill is not needed.
