Hi. I used to use a black and a brown (either burnt umber or burnt sienna) but I have settled on just three primaries. What I like to do is set up my palette with white - raw sienna - scarlet lake - Prussian blue. Then mix up a load of green with the blue and the yellow to get a close viridian or emerald green and put it behind the blue at the edge of the palette. As soon as you mix the red and the green you are instantly into gorgeous gray territory. The whole colour harmony is effortless and instantaneous. Just thought I’d share my thoughts 😀

Thank I enjoyed your thoughts. In college I spent alot of time using a Rembrandt inspired palette raw sienna, venetian red and indigo. It was very insightful how much color could be achieved. As you know there are all kinds of ways to approach color. I have worked with over 20 different palettes over the years. Anywhere from very robust over 35 colors to very limited 5 colors. Most without black of any kind. However I have found over the years of teaching workshops that this palette is great for beginners and works very well to ease students into painting with oil.

@@KevinMcCainStudios You probably noticed my choice of pigments is close to (sir) Henry Raeburn’ s but I find it can achieve quite a sufficient array of colours. I salute you sir 🤩
