  • The Penn Lung Rescue program provides our region with expanded access to Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), a lifesaving treatment option for patients with acute respiratory failure.
Many patients with severe respiratory insufficiency may be too unstable to transport. The Penn Lung Rescue team was specifically designed to be mobile -- meaning they can come directly to other hospitals to initiate ECMO for a safe return back to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia.

From Sydney Australia. We invest a lot in ECMO here, and I just so happen to contract PCP PNEUMONIA about 6 weeks ago now. It is a very nasty pneumonia and must be treated promptly. I waited 3 days to go to hospital, and my chances of survival were slim. My oxygen saturation was down to around %85, whilst receiving oxygen. Doctors told me that I would sedated and go on the machine next room. Turned out to be ECMO. I deteriorated, and doctors told my family to say goodbye. I fought and made a comeback around day 4, and as slowly weaned off the machine and drugs and placed in a ward in a week. I was so depleted and weak. Still am somewhat, and rehab will be a day-by-day process. Without ECMO this post would not exist.
