  • The Rules Girl takes a look at Xia: Legends of a Drift System from Faroff Games.
    In Xia, players are space captains, carving a name for themselves in the vast reaches of a star system. Players will explore the system and complete missions, while collecting resources and combating other players around the table.
    The goal of the game is to win, and you win by being the first to achieve the required number of fame points.

      It seems like there are a lot of die rolls determining your fate - which I'm not against if there are ways to mitigate the randomness by getting bonuses or rerolls to certain kinds of rolls. Is that the case?

    • @markvallis5431
      @markvallis5431 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Daniel-Strain I'm just starting to learn this myself, but I think there's house rules on BGG to help. Many Xia players roll 2 dice to move and choose the highest one.

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan Před 2 lety

      @@Daniel-Strain Well, there are powers that let you reroll certain things. Or are bonuses to rolls. And missions can be rerolled as you do more of the same type. Also, you have four actions you can use for ship Outfit actions. So if you don't move far enough with one, you can spend more to move more.

    • @pixxelwizzard
      @pixxelwizzard Před 2 lety

      @@Daniel-Strain Yeah, there's a lot of ways to mitigate the die rolls. For example, there are mods you can install in your ship to augment abilities that require a die roll (such as movement, absorbing damage, and blaster attacks). Additionally, ship abilities can give you all kinds of creative ways to circumvent the limitations of the dice. That being said, you can't mitigate every roll in the game all of the time, so if you don't like any levels of unpredictability in your games, Xia probably isn't for you. On the other hand, space is dangerous and unpredictable, and the variables of the dice do a good job of simulating that unpredictability.

    I think it's a little too fast and brief for teaching new players the rules, but it's a good supplement to a verbal explanation of the rules and it's a great refresher to anyone who knows the rules but just wants to brush up. Good video.

    Thanks for taking the time to do this. I needed a quick overview as I hadn't played in a while and this served very well thanks. I did notice something however that doesn't seem right. At 10:20 you explain about the initial setup but your explanation isn't quite the same as what appears in the rulebook. The 'dealer' shouldn't have any advantage or choices to make so I believe (and I also verified on the BGG forums) that when placing the tiles, both the shape AND the symbols that match up should be identical to the pictures/symbols used in the rulebook example. So for example tile 1 should connect to tile 2 with the spanner looking symbol. Then tile 2 to tile 3 with the triangle symbol. In a 4 player game, tile 3 connects to 4 with the circle symbol and 4 to 5 with the square symbol in a 5 player game.

    There is a mistake in the rules explanation. Selling 2 cargo doesn't get you a fame point you need to all cargo and it must be at least 2.
    "Trade: Selling all the Cargo Cubes in a ship’s Hold is worth 1@.
    However, you must sell a minimum of 2 Cargo Cubes to receive the
    Fame Point."

    • @drone9
      @drone9 Před 5 lety +1

      According to the Rule Changes section of Embers of a Forsaken Star you no longer need to sell all cubes, just all that the location will buy (minimum 2). ("Trading: You do no longer need to sell all your Cargo Cubes to gain a FP; instead you must sell at least 2 cubes and all of the cubes in your hold that location will buy.")

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan Před 2 lety

      @@drone9 Well, he's not wrong, though. What you're saying is only true if you're playing with the expansion. And the point is without this clarification and with the base rules, you could grab 8 cubes, then keep selling just 2 every round and get 4 fame from 8 without running an actual route.

    When it comes to "how to play" rodney smith is 5he leader. He goes through all subrules and exceptions. RTFM also. they teatch TI3 in 30 mimutes. Here it's only an overview of the rulebook(not the rules) as so, some things are left unexplaiend as in the rulebook. No extra clarification. No extra work here... sorry ...
