A funny character, for the most part....but poignant in his own way. In the final scene when the train reached New Orleans, Sledge was asleep, and Snafu didn't want to wake him just to say goodbye. He just looked at him for a moment, down at a guy who had been his trusted friend and loyal comrade through all the fights they had been in.....and then stepped off the train at the station, where no one was waiting for him. In just a few seconds, you come to realize just how lonely he was, and how little he had of family and friends outside of the Marines he had fought with. Of course, all this is implied, rather than stated...but it made for one of the more touching moments in the series. A great role, played by a damn good actor.
Snafu contacted Sledge years after the war when his book was published... they became close friends from that point on. No one knew what became of him before that letter he penned to sledge.
Hmmm. Good catch! Just my 2 cents, talking about getting off the train, he was alseep, why wake him up? I mean... like what you just said. I don't know, I think id do same thing. No one ever awaits me in the airport or wherever I go. Though I had little of family and friends, if any. At first I though there was something wrong with him, in a way. The way he speaks. I don't know :) Kinda familiar to me, but on the other part, Lacky is also a character that i'm kinda with, BUT, I'm shynear woman. The other guy, Doctor son, I'm almost like him. Exactly like him. Exactly. 100% that's me. With some characteristics from Lucky perhaps. I mean, a combination, but the Doctor son, I'm like him, and you can add the no friends and yeah. I think I need to re-watch the movie some time soon, or whenever, just watched all of it in two parts. 1-3 then 3--10, but there is more to pick upfrom the movie, as I cleary missed these parts, was more focused on therir emotions, the way their character wasbuild and transformed and their life. And such...
In that situation, it is. Shows what kind of person you are if you have to be drafted during that time period. Even Major Dick Winters said he volunteered for the 101st Airborne so he wouldnt get stuck in a foxhole with a draftee who would likely get you killed.
Old post I know but Major Winters said the same thing to Compton in BoB. They’d rather have the best next to them in a foxhole and not some draftee who’d probably get them killed.
SNAFU Merriell Shelton was my Father, Norwood Shelton's youngest brother. They were very close. Rami captured his character brilliantly. I knew him well and loved him very much. He married had 2 sons, and owned a heat and air conditioning contracting business in St Franssville Louisiana, about 20 miles from Baton Rouge. After Sledge wrote his book that much of this information came from for the series Merriell heard about the book and contacted Sledge. They had a reunion in which Merriell's wife Gladys, a sweet lady indeed was amazed at their stories. All that she knew was that he was in the war. He never spoke of it. He did suffer from PTSD but he lived a full life and was a happy man. Sledge was a poll Bearer at Merriell's funeral in 1993.
That is amazing, my absolute favorite character of any series ever. To know that he was like that in real life makes me even happier he is so funny in this series
i love the way snafu and sledge solidified their friendship over a cigarette and little smiles. they almost never left each other's sides after that. beautiful friendship.
This leaves out a particularly telling scene, I think around near when Snafu is chucking pebbles into the skull of a dead Japanese machine gunner. Snafu is a disturbed character, somewhat manacling at times, but when Sledge goes after some gold teeth, Snafu gets angry at him and scolds Sledge over some made up concern over what disease Sledge might catch from doing something Snafu had had no qualms of doing, almost as if Snafu knows thats out of character for his friend to be doing. As if to say "Dont become like me". That was an interesting scene.
It’s a very good scene for sure. Sanfu knows at that point in time the Eugene isn’t completely taken/consumed by the war. Later on on Okinawa you can see that it’s the latter however.
I know what youre talking about; it was the scene when they finally got atop Bloody Nose Ridge... but Snafu mistook that Sledge was cutting out gold teeth and warned him against it but then found out that Sledge was only going to cut out the emblem off the dead Japanese soldiers uniform.
Yeah that was a powerful scene. It was the moment when you realize that crazy as Snafu is, he's actually a good dude who looks out for his friends, even if he's too far gone himself. It really changed the way I saw the character. Might've been a bit too grim for CZcams though. Especially with how ban-happy they've become lately.
It's an interesting scene However if you read sledgehammers book it was a medic who told him not to do it not SNAFU. That is the old Hollywood taking a little bit of liberty with the story for dramatic effect.
It was the one line that broke the ice between them. Snafu seemed to be a dick to everyone, especially the new arrivals. I think it was to protect himself. Similar to what is said in Band of Brothers, you shouldn't get too close with the replacements if you know they are too green and will die soon anyways. Then it's better not to get attached to protect you own mental health.
If they were in the Vietnam war he'd be MORE than stoned, considering other narcotics like heroin were easy to obtain there. Worst case scenario he'd might end up fragging someone by accident.

When Sledge sat down reading the letter from his parents about his dog dying is an important scene. This scene shows how well these Marines knew each other. Just the look on Sledge’s face told Snafu something was really bothering Sledge. Then Snafu talked about 7 years for a dog for every one year of a human. Snafu was attempting to comfort Sledge. This scene shows how close these Marines had become. They knew more about each other than their own family members did. Combat brings out the best of each and each Marine knows how much each needs each other. I think this scene should be added to your compilation.
“Eugene, I’m sorry about your dog” He really meant it too. I love how this Mini series shows how close men become when they go through traumatic events together. “Trauma bond” I think it’s called
Not to mention the value of a life. They mow down hundreds of Japanese, see countless of their own getting killed, but somehow a dog still holds true value. It’s touching in a disturbing way.

So important they don't ban this from You Tube. The message is more important than the dollars. Be it Europe, Pacific, genocide, etc. it is about remembering the courage of the brave and never forget the atrocities of the time, so they hopefully are not repeated. God speed.
Snafu is a great character, that ending though damn, yeah no matter what year you served , you just lose contact with people you served with over time, and that look he gave sledgehammer at the end is the look I felt I had after ending my enlistment and leaving base for the last time. Semper Fi Devils!
My sons name is Rami. My great uncle was actually there in Guadalcanal. My uncle made it all the way to Tokyo Bay. He was messed up in the head but had one hell of a story to tell. He was from Baytown Texas.
I like how Eugene appreciates Snafu's combat experience despite Snaf not being the most Godly man himself. It shows a deeper level of humility in Eugene that he can admit not every moment can be prayer time.
Timothy Summers it was TV drama added by hollywood. That actual moment it’s based on has sledge in a fox hole with him and he asks sledge if he wants to see the picture. If you wanna hear the about what actually happened I suggest reading “With The Old Breed” by Eugene Sledge. The Pacific was great, but sadly there was a ton of extra shit added or changed to appeal to tv audiences.
@@steiner4864 Uh yeah, the Japanese savagely surprise attacked Pearl harbor and killed thousands of Americans. I’ve been to the 101st landing, been inside the 4th bunker in “the first line bunker” to add a little sour the those croutes, Carentan, the bloody gulch, and at mere eglise. Absolutely LOVED Band of Brothers, but I have to say The Pacific blew my mind. Maybe because I know so much about the European theater, but I did a whole bibliography on John Basilone, Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa. There’s no end to how many amazing stories are out there to learn from.
Had two of this type in my company. Great entertainment when they aren't all over you and busting your balls. Twist is that when you fail to hold your laugh, they will come for you next.
Sledge said in his book Snafu saved his life... On multiple occasions. Taught sledge alot.. Sledge also saved snafu.. War brothers... They always shared the same fox hole.. They could wake each other up with a whisper... The Japanese where very close and could hear loud voices. They often attacked soldiers as they slept in their foxholes or when they had to piss.. The Japanese would take an American prisoner and torture them slow so the americans could hear the screams... Years after the war... Sledges wife whispered sledge hammer in Eugene sledges ear to see if he would wake up... He did... That was an amazing story to me...
Rami Malek as Snafu Shelton and Joseph Mazzello as Eugene Sledge are superb in the HBO Pacific series. These are unforgettable performances that will last a lifetime and throughout a career.
Vivian Amador not weird! he’s really attractive - he’s got such striking eyes and his jawline is super defined. and the curly hair really tops it off, he’s such a cutie
Of all the roles, I've never heard Rami talk about this one, and to me this is the one that defined him.. . Mr.Robert & Freddy Mercury is what is mostly heard about
The final scene is some of the best acting ever i think, this is my all time favourite scene at least, like all the pain, the rare down time, the grieving moments & all the good times just come flooding through your mind all at once with that look at his sleeping brother. (I know they're not siblings, you know what i mean)
I know the ending of this is true, because in my 20 years of the Marine Corps, we never said "good bye" to the ones we loved (as friends). At most it was until next time. It is a small corps of Marines.
Army was the same way. Today's world of social media makes it easier to stay connected. Still haven't heard from or talked to most of the guys in years.
The incomparable Snafu...great performance by Rami...great versatile actor; one of his generation's best. Perhaps his best scene in this series is the last scene, when he doesn't wake Sledge up to say good bye. He seems regretful, but decides to leave and head in to a new part of his life. Reminds me of Band of Brother's Major Winter's remarks about Easy Company, after the declaration of the war's end, about each member having to rejoin the world as best he could.
John Dana, what the hell are you talking about? My son, a Marine, has been waiting months for the VA to help with a problem he has. The President made it where he could go to doctors outside the VA and got his problem taken care in one doctors visit. Keep your ignorance to yourself. Call a Marine a moron to his face, you little puke.

So important they don't ban this from You Tube. The message is more important than the dollars. Be it Europe, Pacific, genocide, etc. it is about remembering the courage of the brave and never forget the atrocities of the time, so they hopefully are not repeated. God speed.
Private John Deacon and Private Freddie Mercury 1944
Another One Bites The Dust seems more hallowing now eh?
OzKangaMate Yep
They were both Corporals when deployed to Okinawa. Burgin was their squad leader.
Who knew that Rami & Joe would end up together in Bohemian Rhapsody
Best char on the show hands down!!
Rami Malek is a great method actor. Love him in everything
"Wow"
-Sledgehammer
Wow
Snafu is a great character, that ending though damn, yeah no matter what year you served , you just lose contact with people you served with over time, and that look he gave sledgehammer at the end is the look I felt I had after ending my enlistment and leaving base for the last time. Semper Fi Devils!
From Marines to Rock stars !
That last scene kills me every time
My sons name is Rami. My great uncle was actually there in Guadalcanal. My uncle made it all the way to Tokyo Bay. He was messed up in the head but had one hell of a story to tell. He was from Baytown Texas.
Texas pride
I like how Eugene appreciates Snafu's combat experience despite Snaf not being the most Godly man himself. It shows a deeper level of humility in Eugene that he can admit not every moment can be prayer time.
The subtitles can't get snafu's words right
Seriously can't believe he talked to that Capt. that way. Even in the 90s Army, a Pfc would never have talked to a NCO, let alone an officer that way
Timothy Summers what captain? peck was a private.
I think It's hard to try and pull rank as a fresh guy versus a bunch of grizzled veterans.
What captain?
What officer are you referring to?
Semper fi brothers, it was you that made us free.....
Old Dog they went to japan to free america?
Ya .....u freed americans...by enslaving others
@@steiner4864 Uh yeah, the Japanese savagely surprise attacked Pearl harbor and killed thousands of Americans. If we didn't fight back against the Japanese and we let their conquest go unanswered then the Japanese would have invaded mainland America. I wouldn't say that they made Americans free, rather that they kept us free.
@Hermann Dec. 7th 1941
@Hermann Because they were in China and Manchuria, what history book are you reading, Doctor Suess ???
finally a long video. not some BS 2;50 min one
Thought it really sad when snafu got off the train and never said goodbye to sledgehammer it must of been heart breaking for all the boys saying goodbye to there Brothers in arms
It always serms like he‘s high but I love that. They couldn‘t have found a better actor to play Snafu
I've had a moment like the one at the end where he doesn't wake up sledge, hit me right in my feels
Use to work with a guy who acted like Snafu
"Yeah?!"
yeah people say i acted like snafu were usually from Texas Louisiana and Michigan lol
lotta psychos in the south have that detached affect lol
Lucky
Had two of this type in my company. Great entertainment when they aren't all over you and busting your balls. Twist is that when you fail to hold your laugh, they will come for you next.
love rami malek fantastic actor
5:12 mickey from shameless
You mean Hamm from The Pacific?
Season 11 soon!!!
"Aren't captains the first ones to get shot?"
Explains why he didn't want Ian in the army.
I think this guy might win some awards for his acting some day.
Are you their agent?
1:41 when no one laughs at my jokes
😂
Rami,Congratulations on winning the Oscar!👏👏
From this to queen, what an actor
Snafu sounds like Towlie from South Park.
Southern accent and constant nonsequitors. 😂
"Always remember to bring a towel. Wanna get high?"
This is my favorite role he played by far.
Why am I weirdly attracted to him?
Vivian Amador not weird! he’s really attractive - he’s got such striking eyes and his jawline is super defined. and the curly hair really tops it off, he’s such a cutie
it's hard not to be lol
Everyone is😂
He has that something. Charisma. He oozes it.
Don’t worry hun....you aren’t the only one😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
he’s so handsome 😩😻
Rami Malek's portrayal of Cletus, the Slack-Jawed Yokel is simply exquisite.
I love him in this, he nailed this Louisiana boy!
Of all the roles, I've never heard Rami talk about this one, and to me this is the one that defined him.. . Mr.Robert & Freddy Mercury is what is mostly heard about
FREDDIE BACK IN THE DAY..this snafu actor is awsome
"What do we do now?"
He's asking the question every soldier never really has an answer to when they go home
"I'm thinking about going in a band, or doing something with computers. Maybe both."
"What do we do now?" You live with it.
The show is beautiful in HD!
The difference between sledge at the start of the series and at 4:20 is like night and day.
Those boys were some fucking hard men.
I love the emphasis on how its a no smoking zone
Great actor rami!
One of my favorite series. Malek shows his talent for sure
You better get mean
The scene where Snafu gets off of the train without getting to say goodbye to Eugene breaks my heart...
Phenomenal actor
4:45 i never noticed when I watched this but those 2 marines lose control and fell off xD
private snafu
What kind of Marine gets Drafted
John Dana not like the VA has been giving their medical benefits
John Dana, what the hell are you talking about? My son, a Marine, has been waiting months for the VA to help with a problem he has. The President made it where he could go to doctors outside the VA and got his problem taken care in one doctors visit. Keep your ignorance to yourself.
Call a Marine a moron to his face, you little puke.
@@Miami1991go back and watch your my little pony
Barry Maynard LOL.. Any sombitch was a Marine, you better know when to stop.. For your own good..
@@Redmow51 And then 200k VA applications were purged
If this show was an anime there would be so much fan art of Snafu.
exactly
Snafu strikes me as a stoner. He seemed baked all the time.
"...guess I wont show it to them then."
Snafu's little grin is priceless.
