    How afraid are you that your ideas will be stolen? What do you think of Kaia's answer on the topic?

      I'm not scared. I'm constantly generating fresh ideas, and I know my voice is one-of-a-kind. But I do protect my scripts before sharing them, 'cause I put a lot of work into writing them.

      Ideas are cheap and worth nothing really. Story, plot, structure and characters are much more nuance. And can be protected quite easily.

      Well, they can steal it anyway... according to most Courts, it on'y takes 20% to make an effective change to pitch it as different. That sucks. So, three things you can do: 1) Copyright with LOC, 2) Register it with WGA-w/e or the old fashioned way, 3) Poor man's copyright by printing out your script, yes that old dusty printer, then mailing it to yourself and NOT opening it. But either way you choose, be ready to defend against the theft. My biz partner and I had a script we worked on stolen by a guy who did it as a job. He optioned it around town for some chump change, then finally sold it to a Finnish Company. My partner caught wind, checked his emails, which he kept ALL emails ever... contacted a Cyber Security Co (Palo Alto) and they proved the theft. So the Finnish Co honored that by paying him 1/2 the script sale, original screenplay by and a co-Exec Prod credit. The movie got made and did fairly well. It was night 'n day our version, but because the Idiot who stole didn't change all of the character names (6) that we had established, it gave him away! So also be ready to fight for your stolen story as well! See, those who steal don't think you can afford to fight! They're banking on it. So, find a way! It's a shitty way to get a credit, but it was yours to begin with!

    I quit trying to write for Hollywood and instead started making indie games from screenplays. Movies are just too monopolized, the indie film industry is full of folks inspired when they were 13 to make the next Star Wars, but then making indie films for 30+ something's, just don't see a point unless you're trying to make the next big thing for the kid that you were, and there's a huge missing middle in film, either it's for toddlers or it's for 'adults' and no ones actually in the west making any entertainment for young adults anymore, yet that's where the mainstream will always be, as you become inspired at that age and carry the characters and stories with you as you grow. Kids aren't watching films these days, there will be no next Star Wars or big 80s ips in the mainstream like they were. Games are what's now for the young ones and so they're in the mainstream. You can write screenplays and turn them then into games for them.

      In terms of Hollywood, a couple of smaller movies made each year to win oscars aside, I don’t think movies feel like they are made for adults but for young adults max. Take all those blockbusters, the MCU etc. those aren’t for adults even if a lot of adults go see them.

      @mabusestestament I guess....the artists I knew who went to Hollywood and worked on indie films, seemed to work on political documentaries, or maybe a drama/tear jerker here and there, usually about trying to make some statement about some political subject or 'create the change we need' etc..., either that or they worked on commercials for Kellogs. They beleive it'll build them up and give them credits, but over decades of doing it it seems to me like they start to get a little more comfy in Hollywood and forget why they actually went there in the first place. I mean, it's one way of doing it, but it depends, do you want the role of being a director, writer or producer, or does one actually want to listen to what viewers are asking for, where the markets are. Is it about ego and comfortability or about the audience.

    When a bass line is stolen in music, that is grounds for a law suit. The law doesn't require the whole song to have been stolen. Sumilarly, when the specific details of a character are stolen, that is grounds for a law suit.

    As I understand it, Me possessing the tangible video... has me safe?

    • @mabusestestament
      @mabusestestament Před 3 měsíci +4

      If a book is published it is automatically copyrighted. You don’t have to copyright it anywhere, it just is. Your published book is more than an ‘idea’ it’s a full book.

      Your book is your intellectual property right now, and was from the time you put pen to paper, so to speak. Fairly ironclad legal protection is gained by *registering* your work with the US Copyright Office. You may register it in unfinished form but must re-register it upon completion/within 3 months of publication to have the law behind you in a tangible sense. Best of luck with your book!

    Personally I’m okay with pitching, but I think it’s a shame that producers put so much emphasis on how well a writer can sell their idea. Hate to think how many great stories are left untold because the writer has anxiety. I think producers should be less focused on the pitch and more interested in the idea. Maybe even asking for the pitch in writing instead, It’s then their job to enthusiastically pitch the idea to investors
