  • She may have thought she was demonstrating how to make her favorite dish, but instead she showed what not to do in the event of a kitchen fire. Kelly Caron, 26, livestreamed making a steak on Twitch. Her cooking caused so much smoke, she set off the fire alarm in her apartment building. She ran out of her apartment screaming for help when there were flames in the kitchen. Kelly says she was in “panic mode.”

One time a fire started in our kitchen on this mini electric grill… the fire started to get bigger and bigger. I was hesitant to throw water on it because the device was plugged in, all of us were just standing there not knowing what to do. My dad… outta nowhere, wakes up. Throws his blanket on top, fire was out instantly. He saved the house that day. I miss my pops.

I’m a firefighter in Canada.. we all laugh because she did this on the internet.. but she isn’t nearly alone.. we get calls like this one all the time.. Even smart, well meaning people can panic and make a bad situation even worse. I’m glad she wasn’t hurt (or evicted).

In the Navy, I was at a firefighting school where they showed what happens when you handle a grease fire wrong. They had a big deep-fat fryer that was on fire. Then the instructor, in full gear while we were all like 40 feet back, threw a 3-gallon bucket of water on the fire. The fireball went up like 20 feet and there was actually a mushroom cloud from it, dead serious it was like a bomb going off. That made a big impression on me at age 18, I joined the Navy right out of high school.
We also learned that if you have a fire in the engine compartment of your car and a fire extinguisher, don't mess with unlatching the hood and all that, all you're going to accomplish is to burn your hands. Spray the extinguisher through the grill, works like a charm.

While buying that many fire extinguishers could get pretty expensive, everyone should at least have one on every floor of their house. Especially one by the second floor staircase so that you can get downstairs if you need to. And definitely one in the kitchen by the oven or stove.

I was embarrassed when she would take pictures for her snap stories, I would always think “Who told you to keep pursuing this”
