I use to put my children to bed listening to Toto. No one else. I told them to follow the player. The people who's names are on the credits, recorded for time and life. Cutting edge studio musicians individually and collectively. It is more a case of who they have not recorded or worked with.
My kids are now aged between 26 and 36.
Happy to report my grandchildren are put to bed listening to Toto in 2023 thanks to my kids.
Porcaro, Hungate, Paich, Lukather, have been household names here in NZ with my family.
This 60 year old man is super blessed to have known their music, names well before Silk degrees Boz Scaggs.
I certainly have followed the players and I am glad I did.

What I really love about Toto is just what Luke mentioned in this clip.....they are not political, not religious not anything that is outside of their music....they cater to their audience and fans and not to satisfy a specific entity....they just love music and to play it and to entertain. That's it, pure and simple.

It was Steve Porcaro. Coincidentally i had a self-made 'Africa' Version on SD card. i cued Africa up and we put the windows down, and cranked it up sitting at the red light. I shouted over the the outdoor seated Steve......'Is this Steve??????/..........Steve is this you????..... he smiled and nodded. what a Moment to see one of your Porcaro heroes reacting to you .......i parked and grabbed my 5 year old son (Drummer) and i dared to chat with him . and Steve was Gracious. Toto is a great, great band but it's even more than that : people often forget that those musicians were behind 80% of the albums from West-Coast music during the 70s / 80s / 90s, they CREATED that great melodic rock, that specific sound. And every artist in the world wanted THAT specific sound. The true genius of the band is to create high-melodic, almost symphonic production, adapted to rather simple songs. In short : sophisticated production, but never pompous.

Toto IMO is beyond above talent wise that I don’t think any band has come close…maybe Queen. Rosanna might be the most prefect song ever put together. I can’t say one single bad thing about that song and Africa. My goodness. The musicality that EVERY instrument gets a chance to shine in background parts, forefront, side vocal harmonies.CRAZY GOOD.

There are so many "musicians" who seem to be primarily driven by fame and $$, less into the music per se. Back in '08 my wife and I and a bunch of friends did a month of touring around Africa - every time the group needed a lift, you can guess what we played in the truck! Alway brought a smile. Many thanks for this - really made my day. Love and peace from Sydney - Dave

We were not part of the Paich or Porcoro family. Soo many of us musicians were not as Lucky as they were. They were SOOO incredibly lucky to be in the circle of the LA scene who got exposure and family connections . Ok, so good for them. I hope they know there are SOO many of us out here in mid America that are as good of musicians as they are, but never got the chance or exposure.

Every town has a fellow or two with enough talent to shine above his peers. He may get praises. He may think he's all that. But should he go to LA he'll face s harsh reality that his light does not shine so bright there. Everyone there is super talented and well connected.
We do not get a choice where or to whom we are born but everything after that is our responsibility.

I watched this feature for the 2nd or 3rd time. And always I have the impression music scene in the late seventies in LA was a kind of village stuff. Everyone knew everyone ... Weird in a way.

Listen to the most-sold album, Thriller, and you hear Toto playing. Especially the song Human Nature is basically a Toto song. I got my first girlfriend while dancing to that song as a teenager in the early 80s.

The level of musicality in this band is just ridiculous. And even though Africa might be the least "Toto llike" song as Luke said(and i can see where he!s coming from) I would argue its still the best song they ever made from a musical perspective. Like they say its a song that they can do in soo many different ways and still it has the same atmosphere and keeps the same level of musicality regardless.THAT speaks for a masterpiece of a song!
