- Hundreds, possibly thousands of pounds of birdseed have been dumped around Glen Park over the past two years by the "Birdseed Lady." The excessive birdseed has attracted rodents and caused thousands in damage to local business owners - who even tried to take matters into their own hands.

I once worked at Petsmart and you would catch women like this arguing over how much food they leave out for animals and what kinds of animals would come to eat. They try to top eachother like it was a competition on how insane and out of touch they were. I always wanted to tell them that they were the problem but I also needed a job.

I have lived in San Francisco and the Bay Area for 34 years. There has always been a rat problem. At 2 am you can see rats as big as raccoons on Clement street. At 5 am in Bernal Heights I’ve seen hundreds of rats run down the street. Thanks

Ham town is only a square mile and it's surrounded completely by Detroit. Ham town at that time didn't have those bins. So the rats infested the small city. I had seen them at night knocking over small round tin garbage cans. They were as big as cats. Wouldn't doubt they could get as big as a 🦝.

Months ago my mom wanted to feed the sparrows with oil less sunflower seeds. One day I see the strangest looking squirrel on my porch, I go to check it was a huge rat. Then seconds later another huge rat. A day later 7 huge rats. I got a few trapped and poisoned I was about to get a high power air rifle and deal with the problem myself but we opted for the humane route so we cleaned the porch and used rat repellent in the garden. After 3 days of no return the rats vanished forever and we were officially rat free. We went back to feeding the blue jays and squirrels peanuts designed for outdoor critters and skipped feeding the sparrows. After months no big rats have ever appeared
We have people that feed peanuts to squirrels and they destroy all our gardens so we shoot or trap them secretly lol I wish we could just have the 'feeders' fined.

I had a rat problem, but it came from a nearby hoarder actually. Some rats came to my patio cuz they saw that there were seeds. But I killed them all with rat traps and no more has returned ever since.

It's illegal to feed the pigeons here in NY. When I was a kid I always dreamed of dropping so much food on the ground to summon a legion of pigeons and animals to causr havoc. This lady is living my childhood dream. Such a simplistic yet elegant way to cause chaos and I love it!

I mean sure pests like rats are every where but she is the problem. Animals like rats experience major population booms when they have in increase in food and the resident predator population can't keep up.
She's providing so much food that the rats are breeding like crazy and having bigger healthier litters because of the abundance. Female rats can start reproducing 8-9 weeks after birth. They can have 8-18 pups per litter and they breed all year round.

This happened to us when some new neighbors moved in next door. They were putting out old rice and since we live on the coast there would be the slaps of 100 seagull feet on my roof (my room is in the attic). Early mornings of seagull yelling and all sorts of urban wildlife showing up (rats to racoons and possums to rabbits). I think someone finally told them to stop and it hasn't been as bad since.

We used to have people come and dump huge bags of bird seed, broken up loaves of bread etc to feed the pigeons that hung out at the end of the supermarket parking lot. Needless to say there was millions of rats around there also. People really don't think.
The lady must be spending a fortune on bird seed. The money must be coming from public assistance and Social Security disability. In every city you find a few people who decide it's their mission to feed stray wildlife, rodents, birds, insects, and whatever, regardless to what a nuisance it creates and disease it spreads.
Some lady does that in our town been going on 30+ years.

We need a strong mental health program. These are our neighbors and family members.
I’m a clerk at the ordinance department for my hometown. We’ve had ladies leave out entire rotisserie chickens for the feral cats but it draws rats and raccoons. We have an ordinance against outdoor feeding, but our cases were thrown out because the wording does not directly include the feeding of cats. So, we reworked the wording. Now we have national organizations accusing us of trying to kill cats, but these people fail to understand that irresponsible feeding can lead to unexpected consequences. I would say the majority of our residents are opposed to feeding like this, but very few show up to meetings pertaining to this new ordinance so the only people who show up are those against it. Then I get thirty calls a day blaming the city for causing the rat problem. It’s a wonderful cycle.

I feed birds and it hasn’t created a rat problem in my neighborhood. I’m definitely not completely covering my yard in birdseed either. That’s ridiculous.
My condo used to be nice. When they marketed it to us originally they had a pond at the entrance stocked with fish and a mated pair of ducks in it. They were actively marketing to people from more urban areas who maybe wouldn’t notice a few more trees missing. Soon they were lax about the rules about big parties, about fireworks, about campers in the yard. The opioid crisis hit, then the pandemic, then more recently the rents went through the roof. More people than ever camp here now, and because they keep moving them out of more urban areas they have brought new species of rats with them. No more do we see ducks in the pond because of the people urinating and defecating outdoors.
They try to blame a bird feeder that’s been there twenty years for a more recent phenomena brought on by all these other causes.
Do these bird haters even know rats eat at night? And if they dislike the rats so much maybe they can try not moving them from place to place with their poor excuses for housing programs anyway!

I feed my birds and squirrels. Once in a while I get a rat trying to move in on the action. The good news is rats are nocturnal, and squirrels are not.
Owls are also nocturnal. It's a good system. The rats don't seem to last very long.
Just call and ask your local pest control which yard is more likely to have rats. The one with all the trash or the one with the bird feeders. No matter how clean the bird feeders yard is that the yard more conducive for rats
This is a problem all over California. Middle age bleeding heart women that leave cookie sheets full of cat food in parking lots, many valley towns have huge feral cat 😸 problems on top of rats. Well fed cats don't chase rats. There are direct correlations between the prevalence of rats and feral cat populations.

Don’t like like it don’t live dwell in the rat’s habitat. It’s our their city now
I started feeding the garden birds and have noticed an increase in rats. Sucks though. The most beautiful birds pitched up here.
I guarantee that lady who is talking like as if she’s an angel sent from god to save the planet… I bet she approached the birdseed lady acting like a straight up lunatic with a “YOU CANT DO THAT ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR THIS OR THAT THIS IS MY BUSINESS!!!! IM A BUSINESS PERSON BLAH BLAH BLAH!!! Instead of being cool and sympathetic towards the animals and trying to communicate at her level. Because I also guarantee that the birdseed lady does see herself as a business person who’s business is to protect the animals. But yes I know people like to act all nice and saintly in front of the camera. I’ve had an exwife and exgirlfriend who have wanted me dead to inherit certain things but anyway I bet most will know what I’m talking about. This lady just looks straight crazy with her nice monotonous voice and smile…
