Have you ever taken the time to learn John Mayer's hardest song?! Extremely frustrating!
Battle Studies overall is super under-rated. "Assassin" is probably my favorite Mayer song.
Oh my god that solo. The whole song is pretty solid, but I think it's one of his best solos; it feels very SRV
Just listened for the first time. Absolute banger.
I would have never guessed that people underrated it... until last year when I heard people rank it really low in his discog. From the minute I heard that album, I figured it would be universally acclaimed
Love that song, I've been singing mayer since he came out and everytime people say I sound just like him, it's an emulation gift
Assassin has been one of THOSE songs since the first time I heard it.
The hard part is actually singing while playing the arpeggios 🤯
it's like you spend a week of your life learning, neon, start playing it comfortable, start trying to sing while playing it, and then give up on music altogether
I’ve practiced Edge of Desire so many times now it’s actually gotten to the point where I consider it “easy” for me
Could you sing it? While playing XD
@@SrinivasanChakravarthy that’s an absolute not. I’ve tried to learn how to sing and play it and it takes another level of mastery. But aye at least I can play the guitar part pretty damn good
That's the point of practicing over and over again, good job man
@Angel Perez Yes mate: i concur with you. Playing it = you're really good. Singing it +playing it = dude is from another world
Agreed
I can play Neon, but I can’t play Edge of Desire. So I concur! Also, as a Les Paul player this makes me very happy
No wayyyy... i don't believe you. stop being so modest! You can absolutely play edge of desire
You can definitely play it, I didn't know much about this song till a friend asked me to play it right after I'd finished learning Neon and I could play it in under 15 mins. You can definitely do it!
Edge of desire is easy, just use your thumb for the left hand e string notes, just how John Mayer plays it.
Don’t be too happy its actually played on a gibson SG😝
I think as just a riff neon is harder by quite a bit it’s just that singing neon is more natural as it goes well with the rhythm and bass line while edge of desire is more of a mayer deep cut so people won’t practice the song as much or play it as much, plus singing while doing arpeggios is really hard. It feels like singing while soloing almost.
I dig the more analytical style; you have a knack for explaining things in interesting ways while drizzling a little theory on top for tab jockeys like myself. Would love to see another video like this!
I second this.
Edge of Desire has always been in my warmup routine since it was released. The acoustic version of it is great too!
Personally I found Neon much harder to learn but nonetheless, this riff is still so cool and one of the best from John Mayer
Neon is really difficult because of the right hand, this is really difficult because of the left hand. Personally I consider them equal because of that
@@nicholasberends7751 naw honestly edge of desire imo is WAY easier
@@connorlee9242I agree left hand when using the thumb isn’t too bad and right hand isn’t really an issue
Agreed. It's easier to learn Neon INCORRECTLY, than Edge of Desire, but it's easier to learn Edge of Desire than playing Neon CORRECTLY.
@@connorlee9242i learned edge of desire in an hour and im still working on neon after years...
That was one of the first songs I learned when I seriously got back into guitar a couple years ago; took me forever to get it down… very frustrating
It's easy if you just use your thumb and practice enough :) I can sing and play it too.
God this song is so powerful for me.
It was my first John Mayer song. I wanted something that would challenge me as I felt like I wasn’t improving. I didn’t even know who John was but I knew he was a legendary guitarist, infamous for his incredibly difficult songs.
I now have John’s entire discography on vinyl and I’ve seen him twice. This was the song that introduced me to my all time favorite musician. I can’t listen to this song without getting emotional.
Great video! I've been watching for videos for a while now, and I really like this format. Long enough to explain the ideas, but short enough to easily digest.
Mike, this is top notch content. I love the memes, but the deep dives into specific songs and what makes them unique while maintaining your dry brand of humor is what you were born to do. Keep it up.
Loved the way you explained and broke this song down. As a big non-guitar playing John Mayer fan it was cool to understand a small bit of what makes the song so impressive from a music theory perspective. Keep doing more!
Great video! I’ve been trying to learn this song forever, loved hearing your thoughts on it
Great lesson! Loved how simply you put theory in it and explained such a finger twister of a song that has so much resonance & emotion. Teach the solo next!!!
Ahhh, one of my favorite Mayer songs, from a criminally under-rated album! I worked out an “easier” way to play this that sounds super close, but I’ve never sat down and tackled the way he actually plays it. You killed it, great video man!
Fantastic video Mike, thank you. Enjoying this style of video as well as your more humorous videos. Hope you have a fantastic weekend.
To see the growth of your page over the last several months is so, so satisfying. I love your content, man. Super inspiring, interactive, educational, and humorous! Keep it going for the culture!
You, Sir, have produced an excellent video here. Thank you! I subscribed as soon as you stared talking about the jazz chord progressions and intelligently explained the corresponding triads.
Great video! Big JM fan and long time guitar guy and i appreciate the in-depth look at how he did it with the terms I am familiar with. Thanks!
I am so thankful to the algorithm for blessing me with your content. Love your humor as well as this more in depth look into a song. You actually have gotten me to take another look at John Mayer and dude is legit asf. thanks for that! You are fuckin awesome dude! thank you for the content.
I’m so glad you are covering Battle studies! Edge of desire has been my favourite song of his for sooo long and it seems like it goes unnoticed most of the time
Loved the vid, brief, informative, effective and you had a unique way of analyzing the song and providing references to other tracks. Would love to see you do an acoustic video similar to this one for stop this train. That song is a challenge. The chords are simple but the rhythm and picking pattern is a doozy!!
man this was a really cool breakdown of that riff, id love to see more man!
Loved this, great breakdown! 👏🦖
Awesome. Loving the lighting, chill vibes too.
Loved watching this, a very different style to usual but learnt a lot! Keep em coming!
Great breakdown man. I finally got the neon riff down earlier this year. His hardest riff for me is the intro to In Your Atmosphere. That hammer-on to vibrato is tough.
Great video. Your channel is always fun but it gets better and better. Keep it going!
I love the more serious video! You’re skits are fun too but it’s nice to hear you break down stuff seriously
Bro this video was so short, I wanted more! Lol keep up the awesome content man, think I foudna new binge
I dig breakdowns like this, gives me ideas for chords that I could add to my own riffage.
Love this vid as well as the funny ones. Keep 'em coming!
Love love love it! Keep these coming!
i love the serious/theory kind of videos. keep 'em coming!
Just heard this song for the first time last week and it’s become one of my favorites - and the whole album is fantastic. Thanks for this insight!
Subbed, love the serious approach! Keep the skits but I dig dissecting songs!
Loved this style of video, hope to see more.
I loved this video, this was one of the songs I fell most in love with after the complete continuum album.
Really cool video, you explain this stuff really well
Really neat breakdown. Need more of these
I love this style, please keep it up!
Broooo i just found this channel!!! Keep the educational type videos coming!!!!
Killer tone man! Sounds great brother!
Dat Toan Bone Brugh!
Nice! Love this style video!
Wow that’s a really cool breakdown, I just started picking up music theory too. Now I appreciate JM songs even more!
I like the way you explain, good sir. Keep ‘em up!
Bro, continue to upload vids like these. We love stuff like these and we learn more and we're entertained too.
I love that LP neck tone clean! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Yes sir loved it great info and teaching ❤
I love your stuff man
Loving your style mate. It’s clear from your satire as well that you’re very in tune to the cultural aspects while also having a clue about the technical side of things!
Love the non-meme content from you man. You’re such a talented player and it’s great to see an informational breakdown from you
Ngl i actually like this, you should do more!
Very Underrated song! Agreed! Love these videos too!
Love the way you broke this one down for us, man. 🤘
Cool vid and love your tone!
Well done says this former music major who’s had JM in his set list since about 2 mos. After his first album came out! Love the funny stuff AND love seeing you branch out into the more serious stuff. Keep doin what you’re doin!
This was really useful, I personally have not seen Edge Of Desire broken down like this. A breakdown of Lenny by SRV or Mayer’s cover of Ain’t no Sunshine would be dope to hear. Great work man!
great job, please keep on doing what you are doing :)
love the style of the video
Great video! Very instructive and concise.
My two favorite Mayer deep cuts… Edge of Desire and Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey. I’ve been fortunate to see both of these played live during 2 different tours… edge of desire during the Born & Raised tour and Whiskey during The Search for Everything.
JM is GOAT
love your vids!
That’s a gorgeous Les Paul!
Edge of Desire is one of my favourite songs as well. I only discovered it at my first John Mayer concert. Before that I was just a huge Continuum fan.
Your great at explaining!
I loved this video, subscribed.
Great video. I’ll take all of the theory and tutorial-esque videos you feel like dishing out
I like these little bite sized lessons there pretty chill
Keep doin these kinda videos I like this !
You're killing it bro!
This was great. You had a lot to add to this!
Edge of desire is such an underrated song! Beautifully explained!🔥🔥🔥
I love this content !!!
I dig these more serious videos. You can totally pull that off too Mike!
Absolutely would love these kinds of videos. You're sense of humor is marvelous my friend but I'd love for u to "teach me seymour"
Yeah that is an incredible song. Good job playing it. Looks tough.
bro at the start of the video i was like, nah, edge of desire is basically an exercise, but by the end of the video I subscribed. I now very much like your channel
Great video, I subscribed!
Loved it!
I like this analytical style you're shifting to, it's nice that a knowledgeable person shares his wisdom
Very professional, thank you.
The part where you told us how to make an A major7th chord by going down a half step I don’t know why I never saw it like that but man you made something click in my brain! You’re awesome!
the cheeky mixup in the second verse 👀 Bridge is amazing too!
Great video!
Great vid man! As the Mayer nerd I am, I’ve been trying to nail down Edge of Desire for the better part of a year. But I’ve reached the conclusion that I’m just not good enough yet. So I really enjoyed your Jazz breakdown of the song.
Don’t forget the simple, yet beautiful solo!
Would love to see you do one from “Heavier Things”, like “Wheel”, “Only heart” or “Come back to bed”
I like the serious stuff👌🏼
Hey bro, I’ve been following you for a while. You played really well. I’ve been playing for about 15 months, I’m at the beginning of my journey, and I’m a huge John Mayer fan. I’m starting to get the hang of this guitar thing, although I have a long way to go, keep the content coming, this was a great one. PS, battle studies is one of my favorite albums out of all of the JM collection. It’s amazing.
Great vid I like your more informative content too
Awsome vid bro
Sorry fam but neon is much harder
I have been listening to this song almost every week ever since it came out, i never get tired of it! For those who don’t know, there is an acoustic version of it titled edge of desire apartment session
You're a great teacher dude
sounds so similar to every breath you take!
It's pretty similar to Andy Summer's style
Agree
Love the lesson, perhaps doing a Pino Palladino groove mini lesson?
Your tone is so nice, makes me want to buy a gibson
I love this!
Thanks for teaching us another JM classic, my guy! Today I learned how to play the Amaj9 and Dmaj9. I'll be using those two chords more often because they sound 🌟 H E A V E N L Y 🌟!!!
Love it! Do more serious/analysis videos!!
You are one of the most talented intelligent individual I’ve ever seen
It’s a real tongue twister for sure, now imagine signing it at the same time, OMG 😱. Nicely done!
I haven't even attempted that hahaha!! Love the pedals btw
