  • In this episode Kettlebell Master of Sport, Mike Salemi (kettlebellllifestyle.com) breaks down the art of the kettlebell snatch. One of the most complex kettlebell movements can be divided into two types of drops.
How should you let the kettlebell drop?
The first relates more towards a hard style technique
    hinge based movement
    - Kettlebell flipping over the top
    - Little less technical
    - If you're using this technique it can also go wrong in a lot of ways
    - The further away from the body the more problematic
    - If the timing is off, a lot of torque and pull on your back
    - Shooting a basketball but keep the follow through close to the body
    2nd type of drop
    - Efficient as possible with the movement
    - Corkscrewing the hand
    - Unraveling vs finesse or soft cast
    - Deflect and lean torso back
    - Keeps the kettlebell closer to the midline
    - Turn your palm up
    - 45 degree angle into the heel of the palm
    - Transition to the fingers
    - Allow the elbow to bend and allow contact from upper arm to torso
    - Before you feel any weight in the hands the arm should be fully straight
    - With the snatch often the most limiting factor is the grip
    - Common mistake is grabbing the bell too tight
    - Make sure wrist is neutral, the elbow is fully straight and you've absorbed it with the torso at the right time

Bought this for my youngest to develop basic form for single hand kettlebell work. czcams.com/users/postUgkxtaDAl93XF8wxJhssTtjIFjzid82wglva It has a nice grip on it, just a little rough so it isn't slippery. I was doing a few rotator cuff exercises to test and worked well for those movements I'd been doing with a regular dumbbell. Cool thing you can do is hold it in your hand for door-knob turns to work the forearm and grip. Note: it's small, almost all handle, but that's what I expected given the weight. Smallest I've worked with before is 15lbs, so it was kind of funny to see the difference 10lbs makes.

Excellent vid, there was one piece I was waiting on to see if you covered it and that was the pop into the fingers this helps the hands from calluses which usually get ripped of in the snatch also as you pointed out the way you demonstrated is the most efficient way to snatch like the kettlebell sport guys, on the flip side you also have panels hardsytle but the pop from palm to fingers is even more critical as that style isn't as efficient.

I feel like close to the body drop is a much more of a yank on the arm because the weight is dropping straight down. Outward in an arc seems to put less stress on the shoulder and other joints, but yes the timing needs to be on point with the hip snap backwards.

Learning how to do the clean and press without bruising your forearm. That you've learnt how to flex your wrist and put the bell correctly on your arm. Teaches you how to do the snatch properly. You'll instinctively know how to do the second technique shown in this clip.

Everytime I try to do one of these when the kettlebell nears the top and flips over in my hand it slams into my forearm...I have to use bells that are under 25% of my max, otherwise they'd snap my forearm. I don't get how people are doing these without that happening

  • @jlushefski
    @jlushefski Před 5 lety +1

This is pretty good. As he mentioned, the usual limiting factor for snatches (at moderate-high reps) is the grip, so any techniques that spare forearm/grip energy are useful. At my gym I have a 100lb-er with a high friction thick handle and a 100lb-er with a lower friction thin handle. I'm up to 17 snatches each arm, but I can do only ~35 with a 24kg, because of the forearm fatigue. I have no idea how people do 200+. We need more videos that help people who are already accustomed to the movement and are actually looking to improve performance. Almost everything is targeted toward old ladies who don't even break a sweat.
Also, I don't know why anyone would use that first drop technique; it's straight inferior. What's the point of teaching beginners or whomever a sh*t technique? Teach them right, and maybe they won't be stuck swinging toddler toys forever.

Look at Pavel Tsatsouline's body, compared to the common CZcams fitness body now days. Steroids much? I'll admit that maybe some of these guys are just big. But it annoys me. I been a Personal Trainer my whole life. I know what is possible, and what is not. You can see that they either can't afford enough gear, or are deliberately trying to hang just above what is normal. But you can't hide steroid use.

Michael Clark that’s the difference between a physique developed primarily by conditioning through kettlebells and one focused on strength and hypertrophic. It didn’t take me long with mostly squats, bench, pull-ups and dumbbell rows to look far more muscular than Pavel. I can’t move anywhere near as much weight in kettlebell movements as he does seemingly effortlessly in his videos.
