  • Today we are going to take apart the CMMT81749 1/2 inch drive ratchet.
The process is the same for the CMMT81748 3/8 inch drive ratchet and the CMMT81747 1/4 inch drive ratchet.
When these get dirty or rusted they lock up, this video will show you how to clean them up and get them back to working.

Thanks buddy, that worked real well! Mine was so clean inside I had a hard time believing that was the problem, but cleaning it was indeed the fix. I had some STIHL Multioil on hand, that’s workin just fine as a lube. Thanks again!

I have two of the short handle 3/8" drive fine tooth ratchets that kept locking up. I traced it to a too heavy lubricant that was causing the locking pawl to adhere to the gear head on the return stroke. That allowed the spring and its follower to shoot out and jam the ratchet. I cleaned everything in brake cleaner to get rid of the old lubricant, reassembled it and gave it a few drops of 3 + One oil. So far, so good. I had no idea these tools were so touchy concerning lubricants.

Good informative video! Not to mention I like those types of ratchets because you can fix them the new ones you cannot take apart they're all sealed prefer those better if you know what you're doing

I also prefer this type of ratchet. Sure they are cheaper, but being able to fix them on your own is a plus.

Thank you for this video, I have this exact wrench and it fell apart (switch, spring and the 3-prong part just fell out of the wrench) and wasn't sure how to put it back together. I thought the 3-prong part had to be in a specific orientation but after seeing your video, realized mine was just bent.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this but if you get a stronger spring or strech the stock spring it should stop that issue. Thanks for the video.

@@johnhughes3492 I have a cheap 1/4 inch ratchet from O'Reilly that I got second have and it barely worked, it would lock up and get stuck. I pulled it apart and stretched the spring and lubed it up and now it works perfect, like it should. Same mechanism as the craftsman you have.

I have two of the cmmt's and they keep locking up. I open them up and find no debris. I wipe out the excess oil and they work for a short time. I will try the stretched spring trick. Thanks!

Question,: Will grease work instead of oil?
    Thanks for the great content.

I did try a multipurpose lithium grease when I first tried correcting this issue, but because the grease was pretty thick it actually caused the issue to happen with little to no effort. If you have a really thin grease, it may work very well for you over the oil. It's something you may have to play around with a little though. If you find something that works better, I'd love to hear it!

Nope you can not use grease I tried super lube on a simular craftsman mini head 72 tooth and I think the suction makes it lock up and a thick motor oil is even to thick! I used superlube oil and seems to work fine.

I have to agree. I recently bought a Husky tool set that was on sale at Home Depot, and the ratchets so far seem better than the Craftsman ones I paid twice the price for....
