Just came back from two and a half weeks in Egypt. This is the norm in Luxor and near the sites in Aswan. Outside of Giza, you can at least walk around in Cairo without constant harassment. I was polite at first but they really don’t stop and the politeness of foreigners only encourages more bad behavior. Dishonest cabbies are common everywhere but never before have I had a tout grab me to the point where I had to literally push him down to get him off of me. I started acting very aggressively towards them when they wouldn’t take no for an answer and that usually worked. I understand that Egypt is dealing with massive unemployment and overpopulation but the people involved with tourism don’t leave a good impression that encourages repeat visitors or even the present tourists to spend money. Had multiple vendors try and steal change after purchases (this even happens at the archaeological site ticket windows) or try to charge me ridiculously inflated prices for grocery items (80 Egyptian pounds for water, etc.) The authorities do nothing about the scams and even allow begging inside the airports by baggage handlers and security personnel.
Everyone in Egypt have same experience.Hope authorities begin to do something soon because they will be very big decrease on tourism because of this behave.Do you want to visit again?

Best thing you can do from my experience after travelling to many countries like this: Do not say anything. Just make a rejecting movement with your hand and walk. By this, they will not be able to become familiar with you, cannot guess which language you speak and which country you come from, and cannot start any smalltalk which is always the starting point for involving you into something where you pay at the end.
But if that was the case there wouldn’t be a video. The reason most youtubers engage is to get a video out of it. Local people just ignore them and keep walking. For some reason tourists can’t grasp that concept.
I feel really ashamed of these people.... I am really sorry. Welcome to Egypt. I am Egyptian. I advise you Anyone trying to harass you, just raise your voice and tell him I told you no a thousand times!! And he will get away from you immediately. Because these people think that they are smart by doing this, and on the contrary, it destroys the reputation of Egypt's tourism

Hi Jim. I'm so sorry for the terrible experience you have had. I have to say though that this is quite the norm in Egypt, unfortunately. As a solo tourist, life would be much easier if you explore the country with a local guide who can jump in situations like this and deal with scammers. It really is difficult for us Egyptians to negotiate prices in touristic sites, so I can tell how extremely challenging it is for a tourist like yourself. There is never a shortage of touts. Agreed. Transactions are always difficult in Egypt. The vendors change the price and demand Baksheesh (tips). Great video.
I had similar bad experience in Egypt... despite being with my Egyptian friends! The guy pointed at me and asked for money and wouldn't let me go... this is despite the fact that I was travelling with my Egyptian friends! My friends have to apologise but it's not their fault.
I am Egyptian and I want to send you a message and say to you, We as Egyptians do not accept such behavior, and we as Egyptians do not accept such behavior when we visit a tourist place they do something similar. I want to advise you when you visit Egypt, one who accuses you of attacking him with words and threatens to tell the police and tell the police and never be afraid. Egypt is safe and will remain safe. Thank you and Egypt is always a symbol of beauty.
Great content for your channel but really sucks as a tourist. Went from 2 extrems, from Albania where ppl often insiste to pay for you to Egypt where ppl often expect double the price. lol
Yes it is huge difference and this is the reason I believe Albania will grow the tourism industry a lot because is great destination and people don’t know about.
I initially enjoyed this video because I had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with scammers almost every step that I took in Luxor and in Hurghada and Giza. BUT! You decided to give him money and THEN to take the ride offered. In doing that you not only encouraged him but reinforced the fact that his persistence in hassling tourists eventually pays off and he is then so encouraged to continue to do the same with every tourist he sees. If every tourist just ignored these scammers, not saying a single word and continued to walk on, then the encouragement for them to continue hassling tourists becomes less and less. I was so pleased to see you, in the beginning of the video, brush him off and then so disheartened when his hassling worked and you decided to give him money - the worst possible thing to do. You merely encouraged him and fell for his persistence and his scamming lies - and this IS a dirty scam that is carried out with relentless persistence on tourists in all of the tourist hotspots throughout Egypt. Within the space of approximately 20 minutes in Luxor, while walking to the evening market, I was propositioned (and I DO mean sexually propositioned) by three teenage boys! This absolutely shocked me (in a predominantly Islamic country - it was, unfortunately, something that I came to expect throughout south-east Asia, but I was absolutely floored at it occurring in Egypt) to the point that I just returned to my hotel and sat chatting to the barman while I had a few beers. Ali, the barman, initially chuckled when I related this story to him but he became suitably serious upon seeing my stern face and he said, "This is bad, very bad." This was in 2017 - pre Covid, so Covid is not the problem, but Ali went on to explain that because tourism was just beginning to recover in Egypt, the "young men" (they were boys - as young as 14, perhaps as old as 18) were not earning as they were used to doing and because they were not from Luxor had to find a way of earning money to survive. Now, this told me that Ali was well aware that this was going on and, shockingly to me, simply explained it away in an almost "needs must" way. In Hurghada, while I was walking to a bar I frequented in the Port area, a taxi driver kerb crawled me calling and waving at me through the open driver's window. He was even more persistent than the caleche driver in this video and even followed me the wrong way down a one way street. I eventually walked over to him, closed my fist and shaped to throw a right hook through the open car window without saying a single word to him. He got the message then and sped off yelling expletives in Arabic through the open window. Some older Egyptian men were sat outside a coffee shop and they all laughed heartily and beckoned me over to join them where I enjoyed a coffee and a chat with them for a short time. During my time with them they tried to explain that "He no Egyptian man" and "He no from here" but they continued to chat and laugh and mimic me forming a fist and shaping to throw a punch - but it did turn out to be a pleasant change from the scammers and touts that are to be found everywhere. True Egyptian hospitality and they expected nothing and asked for nothing other than mutual company and (in broken English) chat, which was refreshing. Egypt is a fantastic country and I will be returning for a few weeks next month. Please do not let these people put you off visiting or returning to Egypt: you just need to be ready for them and be prepared to be rude, even although this may go against your own natural instincts. Ignore, say not a single word and walk on making a dismissive swipe of the hand - they will get the message and look for another patsy tourist because they will figure very quickly that they will get nothing from you. Whatever you do, DO NOT reply and engage with them - that is the scammer's "hook" and only you can bite at the bait. As a final thought, my aggressive reaction worked for me, but it is not something that I would recommend that people do - unfortunately, I had just had enough of this low-life scummy behaviour and lost my calm demeanour. Anyone who knows me will be well aware that this reaction from me merely shows how bad the unwanted attention must have been. Enjoy Egypt - it is a wonderful country!
Thanks for your comment! Police watch the video and arrest the guy.Definitely Egypt win the award that is the worst country I have visit and don’t have any plans to visit again.Egypt is beautiful country but people make you feel very unwelcome there.
No problem, Jim. I've been to Greece (Agios Nikolaos) 4 times and have always had pleasant experiences with the local people there. It's very similar to here in Scotland where you are considered not as a visitor, rather more of a guest - no touts or scammers; the only thing here is organised begging from economic migrants, which irritates the hell out of us here in Glasgow! But, more and more, locals step in and intervene when tourists are seen to be giving to the organised beggars who are neither homeless nor poor. I look forward to more of your travel Vlogs!@@jimnomas
Its a 2 Years old video.... And Egypt Stands now also as same as this. Very irritating approach by Cab drivers, Horse Carts and Street Sellers.... Will get tired by ignoring and saying No. Terrible way to treat tourists. It is always advised to travel with a tour guide as i don't think a Million Videos like this will make any difference to these people. These people gave a lot of bad impression in our Egypt's 2 week trip. Just avoid Eye Contact and don't speak back to them. There is no other Solution in Egypt to avoid these kind of people.

I know my comment will be a bit unkind but the truth is that Egypt is not worth visiting. The country itself is interesting, it is warm when we in Europe wear winter jackets and hats, but the mentality of the people there has not changed and will not change. The same applies to other countries in North Africa such as Tunisia or Morocco. Besides, the coronavirus has destroyed the tourist industry, so countries which make their living from tourism will change their economies, which will be less based on tourism.
I am in Morocco now and I visit last year Egypt so I understand what you say. Both countries are very beautiful and warm during the winter but people don’t understand how tourism industry works.
Come to Tunisia We receive tourists well,,,, Money has no value. The important thing is that the tourist be very happy to get to know our culture. This is what we love, which is spreading the culture and civilization of my country. 🇹🇳🇹🇳🇹🇳🇹🇳🇹🇳
You should not have paid him at all, that only contributes to the problem. By hassling you, not only do they hope that you'll pay for their service but they also know that there's a good chance that you might also pay so that they leave you alone. It's part of their ploy, you pay so that they stop hassling you and that's actually how they make the bulk of their money

You should not have paid him at all, that only contributes to the problem. And you guys care about your pockets more then humanity and respect. the money they get out of scamming is unlawful but they don’t seem to care which says a lot about their truthfulness in their religion as well, since the religion teaches it it’s forbidden. And then using it to scam people is even worse..
I wouldn’t of given scumbag nothing at all
Yes I know
I notice his brown leather shoes, they are ridiculous
Good job,I haven’t notice this😂
Do you judge an entire continent for one swindler?

He tell me the price for the ride and after charge me more.
I can't believe you jumped in his carriage!!!!!
Why not?
@@jimnomas because of the irritation you would get from them, they triple the price, they have a way of topping your money,.I wouldn't want to deal with someone, who his primary goal is to take my money,by any means neccessary!@!@
@@rasmuhamednasr4621 if come as tourist in Egypt is your daily life
@@jimnomas yes,but that is very uncomfortable. I was in egypt ,25 years ago.i saw 2 European a man and his lady,to prac8my language, start talking to them, the Egyptian young man who was showing them the area ,refused.and ask me to give him some money, in order just to make a conversation. The people who was around us agreed with him and said, yes,he has to benefit from their company!!!!
@@rasmuhamednasr4621 the sad is that they teach them to take advantage of any person visit the country as tourist and is really bad
At the end of the day, his tactic worked and you went on the horse. This will only encourage him to push harder against more tourists. It's not about the money, even if it costs 10EP I will not get on their horse or camel.
For sure I don’t plan to visit this city again
Go to Iraq and you will notice the difference (Iraq welcomes you) 🇮🇶💗
Thanks for invite me!
@@jimnomas you're welcome

I am sorry for this bad experience. I am upset with what these people have reached you everywhere. They are really annoying during the era of President Mubarak. Such actions were not.
