  • Hello everyone and welcome to Hollywood Insider, where we bring you the behind-the-scenes stories of the stars and legends of the silver screen. Today, we have a special episode to explore the life and legacy of Cary Grant, one of the most iconic and charming actors of all time. We will also address the rumors and controversies that have surrounded his personal life for decades, and hear from his only daughter, Jennifer Grant, who has recently spoken out to set the record straight.
Cary Grant was born in England in 1904, and moved to America in 1920 to pursue a career in show business. He started as a vaudeville performer, and then became a Hollywood star in the 1930s, appearing in comedies, dramas, thrillers, and romances. He worked with some of the greatest directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, and George Cukor, and co-starred with some of the most beautiful actresses, such as Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Ingrid Bergman. He was known for his handsome looks, his elegant style, his witty dialogue, and his charismatic screen presence.
Cary Grant was also a complex and private man, who had a troubled childhood, a turbulent love life, and a quest for self-discovery. He was married five times, to Virginia Cherrill, Barbara Hutton, Betsy Drake, Dyan Cannon, and Barbara Harris. He had one child, Jennifer, with Dyan Cannon, whom he adored and doted on. He retired from acting in 1966, to focus on his family and his philanthropy. He died in 1986, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of cinematic excellence and a mystery of personal identity.
For many years, there have been rumors and speculations that Cary Grant was gay, or bisexual, or had sexual relationships with men. Some of the sources of these rumors were his close friendship with fellow actor Randolph Scott, with whom he shared a house for several years; his use of LSD as a form of therapy; his ambiguous comments about his sexuality; and his portrayal of a cross-dresser in the film I Was a Male War Bride.
However, these rumors have been challenged and debunked by many of his biographers, friends, co-stars, and family members, who have insisted that Cary Grant was heterosexual, and that he was not ashamed or secretive about his sexuality. The most recent and authoritative voice to deny the rumors is his daughter, Jennifer Grant, who has recently produced a TV series based on her father's life, called Archie, which will air on BritBox later this year.
Jennifer Grant, who is now 57, has also written a memoir about her father, called Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant, in which she addresses the rumors and defends her father's reputation. She says that she never saw any hint or evidence that her father was gay, or that he had any romantic or sexual interest in men. She says that he was charming and friendly with everyone, but he was not flirtatious with men. She says that he was proud and comfortable with his sexuality, and that he enjoyed being a ladies' man. She says that he loved her mother, Dyan Cannon, and that he was faithful to her until their divorce. She says that he was a wonderful and loving father, who taught her many valuable lessons and gave her many happy memories.
Jennifer Grant says that she wrote the memoir and produced the series to honor her father's memory and legacy, and to share the truth about his life and personality. She says that she received some hate mail and criticism for denying the rumors, but she says that she had to speak the truth, and that she does not care what other people think or say. She says that she loves her father unconditionally, and that she respects and supports anyone who is gay, but that her father was not.
We thank Jennifer Grant for sharing her insights and memories of her father, Cary Grant, with us. We also invite you to watch the TV series Archie, which will give you a deeper and more intimate look at the life and career of one of the greatest actors of all time. And we hope that you will enjoy and appreciate the films and the legacy of Cary Grant, who was not only a star, but also a legend.

Gay men always try to say every man is or was gay or dabbled. I think it's more wishful thinking.
My gay guy friends always do that.
