In this week’s episode, we discuss the best fall landscape photography advice I've ever heard! Advice is one of those things that everyone receives, some good & some bad, but I wanted to put together this video compiling all the best fall landscape photography advice I've received over the years into a single video. All of the advice in this video pertains to the actual on-location photography process and not the post processing and editing workflow.
In this video, I break down all the best on-location fall photography advice I've received throughout the years. Some of these pieces of advice I'm sure a few of you have heard before, but my hope is that you'll uncover at least one helpful piece of advice that you can apply to your fall landscape photography moving forward. I hope you enjoy this week's video & as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

Great tips Mark! Living in PA, I’m definitely going to be intentional with planning my fall shooting trips…Also wanted to give you a shoutout. I’ve only been a photographer hobbyist for a little more than a year having recently retired from a marketing career, and your channel is my favorite. For me, I think it is because you have not been a photographer your entire professional life. Your passion and fresh perspective on photography comes through in your videos. Thanks!

Great tips. I think the best advice is just to get outside and make the most of each trip. You may go with one purpose in mind but be mindful enough and open to those unexpected possibilities - the key is to get out, use the gear and try things. Be creative while the Fall season is passing because it goes quickly and colors change from week to week.

You are so right about that weather. I get excited when it's going to be cloudy all day because I can always find something to shoot weather it be wildlife or landscapes. When the sun gets to high it can ruin it all. I'm going to New River Gorge N. P. the third week of October to shoot some waterfalls after a few days in the Smokies , I hope to get some of those cloudy days then. Great video!

I think the best advice from this video, which many amateur photographers seem to be unaware of, is "Bad weather is good weather." My favorite lighting is in the late afternoon/early evening when the sky is moderately overcast -- not solid gray, but overcast enough so that there are only slight shadows. I leave the color balance on auto, and in Photoshop a custom color temperature of around 4800 to 5200 usually seems to work well. If I use cloudy or shade, the resulting colors look way too warm.

hi Mark, thanks for the vid, as I have been watching for some time I have built up a calendar of events and changes within the landscape (mainly on your advice) for now in the U.K. its fungi season, lots of the stuff coming in as the weather changes and the trees are not replacing but losing foliage, So after fungi its waterfalls in the Lake District within the next two weeks to grab the colours and due to the rain a decent flow rate. you are a great inspiration, once again Thanks.

I used to set my WB to auto, but now I set my white balance so that my LCD matches what I see. The histogram is based on what the LCD is showing. If your LCD doesn't resemble something close to the actual scene, you could be blowing out one the RGB without knowing. This is specially true for the Red histogram. It's usually not critical unless you're shooting in places like Bryce Canyon, Fall colors, sunrise/sets, etc. Great video as usual!

Go local. For me this is the strategy this year. I checked a forest all year round and now I have a pretty good idea where and what can be shot. So my plan is to go to that specific location every couple of days.
Have no clue if is going to work (which is not really an issue as I am not a professional) but at least will give me a good amount of time outside. 🙂
The best thing about this is that the forest is 10 minutes from home.
Anyway, great one Mark. I have a pretty decent polarizer but actually I did not include it in my photography routine. Usually I simply forget about it.

A lot of good advice in this video. I live in NW Wisconsin, the lake effect from Lake Superior makes for color changes a different times and not just one big wave from north to south. So I go to State or more local color forecast websites for stages of color. Also, I don't use auto WB anymore, I now set my color temp using the Kelvin scale and get closer than auto white balance.

I think you can wing it if you live right next to a great location that you don't have to travel to. Then you can just wake up every morning and see what it's like at sunrise or just go there every evening and see what it's like at sunset. If you are travelling somewhere specifically for fall colors then planning it to make sure the foliage is right at the time that you go is important.

Thank You for the great checklist to plan and visualize before going. It is a great time to have a camera in hand at anytime. Not to cause any lack of sleep but with some cameras the night is as bright as day (almost) but on a clear or whispery cloudy night you get a vertical Milky Way before midnight just a few nights after a full moon to just a few nights before a full moon and the fall colors at night can make a foreground pop. Also with some moonlight a valley of fall colors and stars above are stunning. PA Grand Canyon is awesome with the contrast but bring bear spray!! Sometimes fields will be full of deer at night and the contrast of colors I have seen in the smokies while at campgrounds with people all in bed. LED light color temp is the same as moon light shining off the moon and a cloudy night is a natural softbox.

Hey Mark, thanks for the great advice! It helped me this year for sure! Especially on the “Not winging it” and the “Frame it up”. Makes a big difference. I did have a question though. There are certain compositions i love, where the main subject might be the stream by a set of trees in peak color. Is it ok to not get the full tree in frame? I struggle with this because i think you should, but then i would have to do a really wide angle and the subject, i feel, gets lost. I would love to get your take on that. Thanks again for all the great vids, keep em coming 😎

Leaving Friday to photo and fish in Northwest Ontario. No roads, no trails, all by boat. Foreground tends to be water, and the photos can get repetitive.
I used a similar app to plan our Oregon coast / Cascades trip in about a month.

As always I found your video very entertaining and informative as well. In my City, Kolkata, during Autumn and Winter, beauty comes in a different way, and in these two seasons are my favourite for photography. In autumn we celebrate our Biggest festival Durga Puja...If you can come to Kolkata at the time of Durga Puja you will witness the celebration...

All about the composition. Do we need to gather & put the leaves on the rocks if need be?

Thanks for the great tips, Mark. I would never have known there was a fall foliage map - no could here in Australia, but useful to know nonetheless when we get the chance to travel again.
