It did NOT go as intended... 👀

  • It should have been 31 days of using oil pastels.. but it didn't quite work out that way. `here are the 'results' of my March Daily challenge, which I consider a success despite the small amount of work created.
    Why? Because I learned something really important. Personal challenges using one type of art supply are all very good, but if you don't have the interest or time to really learn them, it just isn't going to work.
    So, moving forward I will be much more mindful of both the amount of time I have available each day and the level of interest I HAVE in learning / using a material before setting a personal challenge.
    Anyhow, all that to say, hope you enjoy this video and do pop back for the April personal challenge video!
    Hugs,
    Eve

    Well you did more than I did. My sum total of work with oil pastels was to take a picture of my collection 😊

    One cool pastel technique I've seen is laying down a contrasting ground in watercolor. You can go over it with the oils and it makes the art so much more vibrant. Imagine hints of bright orange peeking through

      Oh, this sounds like something I could definitely try, the amount of watercolours I have! Thank you for sharing, I'll definitely try it out! 😘

    Well, this made me feel better about my #100DayProject. I have done more artwork than I've been posting, but "keeping track" of it with a post each day is apparently more than I was able to manage. And I have missed several days, too. But it's okay.

      Yes, it’s is absolutely ok… we shouldn’t be forcing ourselves to ‘do’ every day - it’s not healthy in the long run.. but I do like to challenge myself to aim for everyday, just so that instead of sitting and doom-scrolling when I have a spare half hour, I can actually pull out a sketchbook and know I have a ‘plan’ if I need it. 😍
      Im so glad that this video also helped you to feel better about your 100 days Miranda! 😘

    In my opinion, you did well! My favorite was the bookcover study. 😍
    Your previous month challenge (the acrylic one) inspired me to rotate my art supplies. March was water-soluble graphite, and I only managed to get 3 small pieces done before I went back to my watercolors 😂
    I'm having fun watching these kinds of videos, and I'm excited to see what your next art supply challenge will be.

      Oh, this was so fab to read, thank you for sharing! It really is a struggle isn't it to 'force' ourselves to use something that doesn't light us up. I'm taking a positive from the experience though - I can revisit in a few months or just package them up and sell them. There's aways someone that wants to buy used art supplies right? 😉

    I don't use pastels but I know a professional artist, Dan Gray on Vancouver Island in Canada, that uses boards with a grey base. It makes sense, as you would then be able to have better creative control over light.

    Ah, I haven't really gotten into pastels either. Did one or two paintings with them, bought some pencils for finer details, got some fancy paper for them...and barely use them. Well, most of us have one or two media that just don't mesh well with us. Still, I think it's cool that you tried it for so long. Hope stuff will go better in your life and everyone's health soon! 🤍

      Thanks Nell! My family have been saying, 2024 so far has been a really duff year for us... here's hoping it improves... 👀 But we are in total agreement - gorgeous for the color and coverage, but nope. Not my thing! 🤣😘 xx

    I work in oil pastels a lot my Daler Rowney in encaustic because they are so hard you have to use them on the first layer if you are going to use them then sennelier oil pastels who are soft creamy and so easy quick medium to learn

    • @EveAshford
      @EveAshford  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Lora! I think it was you that suggested I use a harder pastel underneath, which is why I got the Pentels. I think ultimately I just prefer to use other mediums.. but I am not against trying with oil pastels again in the future. Perhaps just as a ‘grab and have a go’ though rather than a full month… thanks so much for watching and your guidance! 😘

  • @crystalipock9725
    @crystalipock9725 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I have the pentel set too, and I also am so challenged by the oil pastels! I am still trying to get the hang of it. (a total novice though) I want to upgrade but not until I have worked with the pentel set a QUITE a while longer. 🤣I loved that tree with all the orange in it as well! and the Cezanne would be so gorgeous to do--in my dreams.

    • @EveAshford
      @EveAshford  Před 3 měsíci +1

      You’re far more sensible than me Crystal. I should’ve spent the small amount on the Pentels to begin with, and left the senneliers until I knew whether I really enjoyed working with them. 😆 But, I still do have ambitions to copy the cezanne.. so stay tuned! 😉😆😘

    • @Iwanttodrawachicken
      @Iwanttodrawachicken Před 3 měsíci +3

      I'm so glad I didn't start with the pental set. I started with a much creamier oil pastel and it was like magic. After I was completely in love with oil pastels and wanted to make larger art, I bought pantel set and wow! It's nothing like real oil pastels. Talk about fighting my supplies. Completely incompatible with my learning style.
      It's getting donated to the local charity shop and I am sticking with the creamier oil pastels.

    Hmmm too bad you stopped with them but of course I understand... they are a messy thing to get the "control" you want... apparently Mr. Picasso had something to do with their invention... I have some very gooey ones but not yet... I'm In Groningen tomorrow!!!! At the place I sent you... I don't even know... and I don't think I have any time which is a drag... I'm in the car from noon... maybe we can chat...

      @@EveAshford In the plane…. going to the US New York for 10 days. Hope to see you one of these days. I brought two small drawing pads, two small sets of tombows (greys and pastels) and water colours Sennelier in a small palette, 2 poscas (blk and wht). It was a whole thing to decide on these.
