Because she had the experience of vision growing up. She learned body language and facial expressions. They are ‘normal’ to her, like talking with her hands and turning her head towards him. It also probably matters that she has some vision still. If you’ll notice he never turns his face towards her nor does he gesture much. Also his facial expressions are kind of blank....almost without nuance. Like a baby. That is because he grew up without vision at all. He never had a reason to learn these things. His body language and facial expressions are very much like how I remember my grandfather, who lost his sight as a baby. He used to turn his ear towards whoever he was speaking with, never his face. I hope that makes sense and answers your question.

Not being able to watch foreign films with subtitles is such a good point. There's this hot debate about subtitles where people disparage voiceover dubs, for inauthenticity or whatever. But people forget that dubs are accessibility tools. Beyond people being "too lazy" to read subtitles, not everyone is able to use subtitles, and they need an audio component instead.
It's really weird to think that Tommy has NEVER seen anything, so he doesn't even have a concept of colour or sight, he literally can't see ANYTHING, no sighted person can imagine seeing nothing, because when you try that, you'll always just imagine grey or something, but Tommy doesn't know what grey is so he cant imagine it. Him trying to imagine sight is like us trying to imagine a new colour.

Sounds like a myth to me, lol. People who see frightening things usually see what they fear. If people heard about the shadow man before they started experiencing sleep paralysis, that could cause them to think they're "seeing" him. Idk though, just my thoughts. My mother never saw anything scary during hers, only beautiful things. My brother saw something terrifying once, but no shadow guy and I've suffered A LOT from very heavy and complex sleep paralysis (was part of a sleep study because of it) and while I've seen, hard and felt a lot of horrifying shit, I've never seen any shadow guy. Not saying that means it's not common for people to see, just saying that people in old times saw a mare during their sleep paralysis (hence the term "nightmare". The creature that people saw while being paralysed appeared to be riding their chest, causing their difficulty breathing while paralysed, which also inspired the Danish term "mareridt". To be mare-ridden). Then when aliens became a big hollywood deal, people starting seeing aliens during them and suddenly it's a shadow guy. Just seems like the fears change within cultures overtime and sleep paralysis hallucinations change accordingly. Almost all of my visual hallucinations have been real people. Family members and one time... Sarah Jessica Parker walking into my room, standing at the foot of my bed and just staring at me, expressionlessly... She's creepy.

I'm guessing she's directing her face/eyes toward the direction of the sound of his voice. (Edit) Okay, she said "still have some sensory..." during the "do you keep your eyes open or shut". So she's legally blind and not completely blind; even if completely blind they may prefer to look in their direction when talking as a courtesy/habit from the time she had her full sight.

It’s not that bad for me. I see in my dreams the way I visualize my surroundings in real life, (not very detailed and out of focus in some areas), then wake up without sight; what’s familiar to me. Every blind person views their experiences differently. You just have to accept the way things are at some point.
Minecraft Kid 67 I use Voiceover. I tap somewhere on my phone screen, my phone reads the words to me, and I double tap the app I want to open, the letter I want to type, etc. Molly Burke made a couple videos about how blind people use technology. I don’t know if Tommy has, but he is a blind man using CZcams, so ya gotta assume he uses technology the same way as most blind folks.
It's not stealing I think. In my opinion, it's like privilege. In my country (Indonesia), many public places like bus, toilets, etc, are free for "disabled" people. @@KentRoads i lost half of my vision last year for month and a half.dont have the money to go to a doctor so i just search on my own. turns out i realized that i been drinkin soda like water for a while.so i started to cut sugar on my diet. i'm cured and vision returned 100% a month later. i'm grateful on my case that i didn't need to go to a doctor to find a remedy.
If I were ANYONE I'd be into lucid dreaming. I mean you can literally talk to your subconscious, or a manifested form of it. It has seriously helped me throughout my life such as getting to speak with my passed father. The human brain is an amazing thing. I can't help but reply everytime I see someone mention lucid dreaming :D

heard a story from some people who have a friend who is similarly blind as her, they were drinking and this guy was talking with her for about half an hour when she got up to go to the bathroom and accidentally knocked something over on the ground. The guy she was talking to said: "how much has she had to drink?", he hadn't even noticed she was blind.
She's been able to see before and was probably raised thinking it was rude not to look at who is talking to you. Makes sense to me, if I could see shadows of people and hear where they were talking from, I'd do the same thing.
Not to choose sides but it is. I mean living your whole life with vision and then loosing it and onoy seeing darkness is really sad. Same for being born blind, but since you are blind from birth, you don't know what its like having vision so you grow adapt to not having sight. But when you go blind you have to relearn how to do alot of things. And most things you can't do.
Also, if you are born blind, you don't really know what you are missing out on, because you have nothing to compare blindness to. On the other hand, in the case losing your sight, you will always remember what it was like to see, and you will always miss it. It's like having something ripped away from you, as opposed to never having it at all.

my brain utilizes all my senses all around my body in dreams when they are of an importance for the given moment, but i also have such a ridiculously high level of an imagination that allows me to simulate feelings, smells, sound+full vision so that's definitely different from person to person, regardless of any handicaps or such...
the best way i can describe sight is, if every object in a room made a sound that only your eyes could hear. depth perception would be like hearing an item louder because its closer and quieter because its farther away.
In nature everything is just waves received and interpreted by our organs. Lights waves and translated into vision by our eyes, and sound waves are translated into sounds. Light waves are probably more informative since our eye can receive so many of them at the same time and they don't tangle. I wonder if some creature with super hearing can hear as we see.

Also, as a filmmaker, you should ask yourself, if the dialogue is good enough to stand on its own. If you blindfolded someone and had them listen, would they understand the ideas, the story, the context of everything? Same for the other way. If you muted your film, and someone could only try to understand everything through the visuals alone, would they feel like they experienced a full movie, or would they be completely lost. If you were able to make something that fits both of those criteria, that might be a truly astoundingly told story, especially for those with both senses, as it might give a more rich and fulfilling experience than a story otherwise would.
@@JWPSmith21 Interesting point, even though there are movies where the dialoge is almost non-existant and they still are able to convey as much as movies with dialogue. A good example for me is 3-Iron, great movie and the main character does not say a word

Not everyone's blindness can be "cured" it's different for everyone's eyes and why they went blind/were born blind and I'm pretty sure with Tommy's condition surgery wouldn't making able to see
Its so interesting how somebody who lost their vision later in life looks like their Not even blind. She still moves her eyes up when thinking, looking into the direktion where the sound is comming from. Using her hands to communicate while talking. Its so facinating.
I think it's reverse of why tommy doesn't open his eyes. If he's not used to using those muscles, then she's so acostumed to doing it that she doesn't even think about the fact that it's of no use anymore. Matter of fact, when was ever looking up while thinking a useful thing? It's just body language, and that's what she still remembers, not each gesture in particular.
I am partially sighted and roomed with a guy who only had light perception at the MD school for the Blind. He insisted on having the lights off all the time.
Tommy once talked about how friends would visit his place and turn the lights on only to forget to turn them off at the end of the visit. Poor guy got stuck with a huge electric bill.
I wonder how Tommy can even know what sight is like, or conceptualize it, never having it. It’s like telling me I have another sense, I just wouldn’t even know how to conceptualize it, you can’t really explain the sense
well. the comparison is irrelevant since the vision is the thing, a lot of people have it that can explain it at least poorly. if you had another sense and nobody else had that, that's a different thing.
I’d imagine that his understanding of sight is based on how he understands other senses. Since he is able to feel ( and therefor has a grasp of depth and form of objects/space ) i’m sure that he can’t understand the actual sensation of sight, but he can understand the fundamental purpose of sight which is to somehow render those forms in a manner other than touch alone. When you think about it the higher awareness that humans have of their surroundings even lacking vision is pretty incredible.

I'm really crying watching video because my father is blind. What i really know blinds person is they are amazing, they have stronger in imagination and other senses. My father is a really strong person, he work hard to provide our need and I am proud having a blind dad.

I am visually impaired. My eyesight is very similar to hers. I have optic nerve damage. However, I had sight 2020 vision for 35 years before losing it. I can relate to the dream statement. Sometimes I'll dream so vividly and I'll realize that I can see again in my dream and I'll look at my hands and see all the details and then realize while I'm dreaming that I am dreaming. Then I'll wake up very disappointed. But, I am always grateful that I can still dream very vividly and I am lucky enough to be one of those people that remembers their dreams every night.
@@d.jcheetah8724 I am very glad you asked me this question. A lot of people are ignorant and don't realize accessibility features on phones have gone a long way. I have what you call speech to text. So I just tell my phone what I want to say and it puts it down in the comment section. No need to even look that my phone. Then, I listened back to how it sounds. Sometimes I have to delete every do the whole comment again if there is too many errors but usually it does just fine as I talk real slow and my phone picks up every word and quotation. Here is a little fact information for you. I will start by saying I was like you just over one year ago. I had never known a visually impaired person or blind person in my life. I only knew what I seen on TV. The real world though is not like you think. 90% of all blind people still have some sort of vision. Only 10% of the world's population is completely blind. In other words if you see somebody on the side of a road one day with a white cane sunglasses and is looking at a cell phone do not assume they are not blind. Chances are they're using what is called TalkBack and their screen is probably not even on. We as visually impaired or blind people like the somewhat feel normal so yes we still will staring the direction of our phones. Thanks for the awesome comment. @@Jdb63 well I own an Android phone. The LG v20. If I hold down the home button Google will pop up and I can ask it to open any app I need. When it comes to navigating in apps I use TalkBack or select to speak. Both options in your accessibility settings. So when I'm on CZcams I listen to the titles of the videos. If they sound intriguing I listen to them. If I have to search for a certain video I just use the little microphone button next to the search bar on CZcams. And I just speak whatever video it is I want to watch. And if you're wondering how I find the little microphone button it's called muscle memory plus my vision allows me to still see certain colors and shapes through a filter of pixels and gray fog in my vision. So even though I can't see detail or faces I can make out certain areas on the screen of my phone. If you want to know more just click on my channel and I have videos talking about my visual impairment. Or you can just read the comments on my videos as they are all written by blind and visually impaired people. Thank you so much for being curious. Something interesting I noticed--Christine incorporates a lot of gesture into her expression, while Tommy doesn't. I did notice him tapping his leg when he listed things out at 2:43, though. I loved the way he is so positive ... My dad is blind and I always feel like how must it feel to not know how your children look like ... How you look like... What color clothes are you wearing... I'm guessing she's directing her face/eyes toward the direction of the sound of his voice. (Edit) Okay, she said "still have some sensory..." during the "do you keep your eyes open or shut". So she's legally blind and not completely blind; even if completely blind they may prefer to look in their direction when talking as a courtesy/habit from the time she had her full sight.

I tap somewhere on my phone screen, my phone reads the words to me, and I double tap the app I want to open, the letter I want to type, etc. Molly Burke made a couple videos about how blind people use technology. I don’t know if Tommy has, but he is a blind man using CZcams, so ya gotta assume he uses technology the same way as most blind folks.

heard a story from some people who have a friend who is similarly blind as her, they were drinking and this guy was talking with her for about half an hour when she got up to go to the bathroom and accidentally knocked something over on the ground. Not to choose sides but it is. I mean living your whole life with vision and then loosing it and onoy seeing darkness is really sad. Same for being born blind, but since you are blind from birth, you don't know what its like having vision so you grow adapt to not having sight. But when you go blind you have to relearn how to do alot of things. And most things you can't do.

Also, if you are born blind, you don't really know what you are missing out on, because you have nothing to compare blindness to. On the other hand, in the case losing your sight, you will always remember what it was like to see, and you will always miss it. Different people have different senses in dreams. I, personally, can use all of my senses. But, I can't do a lot of cognitive functions like math.

In nature everything is just waves received and interpreted by our organs. Lights waves and translated into vision by our eyes, and sound waves are translated into sounds. Light waves are probably more informative since our eye can receive so many of them at the same time and they don't tangle. I wonder if some creature with super hearing can hear as we see.

Wow. A blind man, who loves movies. I'm a filmmaker, and that is NEXT LEVEL AWESOMENESS, I kid you not.
Also, as a filmmaker, you should ask yourself, if the dialogue is good enough to stand on its own. If you blindfolded someone and had them listen, would they understand the ideas, the story, the context of everything? Same for the other way. If you muted your film, and someone could only try to understand everything through the visuals alone, would they feel like they experienced a full movie, or would they be completely lost.
If you were able to make something that fits both of those criteria, that might be a truly astoundingly told story, especially for those with both senses, as it might give a more rich and fulfilling experience than a story otherwise would.

Its so interesting how somebody who lost their vision later in life looks like their Not even blind. She still moves her eyes up when thinking, looking into the direktion where the sound is comming from. Using her hands to communicate while talking. Its so facinating.
I think it's reverse of why tommy doesn't open his eyes. If he's not used to using those muscles, then she's so acostumed to doing it that she doesn't even think about the fact that it's of no use anymore. Matter of fact, when was ever looking up while thinking a useful thing? It's just body language, and that's what she still remembers, not each gesture in particular.

well. the comparison is irrelevant since the vision is the thing, a lot of people have it that can explain it at least poorly. if you had another sense and nobody else had that, that's a different thing.
I’d imagine that his understanding of sight is based on how he understands other senses. Since he is able to feel ( and therefor has a grasp of depth and form of objects/space ) i’m sure that he can’t understand the actual sensation of sight, but he can understand the fundamental purpose of sight which is to somehow render those forms in a manner other than touch alone. When you think about it the higher awareness that humans have of their surroundings even lacking vision is pretty incredible.

I am visually impaired. My eyesight is very similar to hers. I have optic nerve damage.
However, I had sight 2020 vision for 35 years before losing it. I can relate to the dream statement. Sometimes I'll dream so vividly and I'll realize that I can see again in my dream and I'll look at my hands and see all the details and then realize while I'm dreaming that I am dreaming. Then I'll wake up very disappointed. But, I am always grateful that I can still dream very vividly and I am lucky enough to be one of those people that remembers their dreams every night.

@@d.jcheetah8724 I am very glad you asked me this question. A lot of people are ignorant and don't realize accessibility features on phones have gone a long way.
I have what you call speech to text. So I just tell my phone what I want to say and it puts it down in the comment section. No need to even look that my phone. Then, I listened back to how it sounds.
Sometimes I have to delete every do the whole comment again if there is too many errors but usually it does just fine as I talk real slow and my phone picks up every word and quotation.
Here is a little fact information for you. I will start by saying I was like you just over one year ago. I had never known a visually impaired person or blind person in my life. I only knew what I seen on TV. The real world though is not like you think.
90% of all blind people still have some sort of vision. Only 10% of the world's population is completely blind. In other words if you see somebody on the side of a road one day with a white cane sunglasses and is looking at a cell phone do not assume they are not blind. Chances are they're using what is called TalkBack and their screen is probably not even on. We as visually impaired or blind people like the somewhat feel normal so yes we still will staring the direction of our phones.

@@Jdb63 well I own an Android phone. The LG v20. If I hold down the home button Google will pop up and I can ask it to open any app I need.
When it comes to navigating in apps I use TalkBack or select to speak. Both options in your accessibility settings.
So when I'm on CZcams I listen to the titles of the videos. If they sound intriguing I listen to them. If I have to search for a certain video I just use the little microphone button next to the search bar on CZcams. And I just speak whatever video it is I want to watch. And if you're wondering how I find the little microphone button it's called muscle memory plus my vision allows me to still see certain colors and shapes through a filter of pixels and gray fog in my vision. So even though I can't see detail or faces I can make out certain areas on the screen of my phone.

Something interesting I noticed--Christine incorporates a lot of gesture into her expression, while Tommy doesn't. I did notice him tapping his leg when he listed things out at 2:43, though. I loved the way he is so positive ... My dad is blind and I always feel like how must it feel to not know how your children look like ... How you look like... What color clothes are you wearing... Or any basic basic daily stuff that we don't even feel is such a great blessing to be able to see. I hope we find a cure and he gets to see us and the world once in his lifetime atleast.
This video was very helpful and informative. My goldfish is permanently partially deaf and blind from a freak accident this past January. So he's been through a lot! He's doing much better now! But he still has his days. Tommy and Christine, you are a wonderful inspiration!

I guess that’s the spirit we have to carry on in our lives. Be thankful and grateful. Happiness will follow along. Just look at these two! Always smiling and being so so positive.

This makes me eternally grateful that I'm able to see, hear, taste, smell, and touch without much issue. I really need to quit taking this stuff for granted.

Honestly props to them for being so strong, when he was explaining what he wishes he could do, it was heartbreaking to know I do those things with ease.

Having depressive tendencies, if I were to go blind and dreamed in full vision still, I could see myself sleeping a lot. Especially considering I already have quite vivid dreams. She is very strong.
This is fascinating content and I love the channel but I watch it because his personality and outlook on life is so uplifting. It makes me wish I could come across more people like him to be friends with in life.
We should appreciate the gift of eyesight the God has given us Alahmdulillah
