A photon hits rhodopsin in your retinal cone. The photon is absorbed and flips the molecule from cis to trans. Brain senses this as a colour in a spot on the retina. So you need to know organic chemistry and quantum physics.

Purple is a very interesting and unique color! Because it isn't even on a visible color spectrum. Purple is imagined by our brains when both blue and red cones in our eyes are triggered. But since what actually stands in the middle of blue and red - green - does not get triggered in our eye, our brain just comes up with another mix of blue and red. Purple is also a royal color. Purple dye was very hard and expensive to get in the middle ages. This is also why there were almost no purple flags. Would be too difficult to do a lot of them. Things that are purple: plums, eggplants, grapes, some variants of potatoes, carrots and onions. Beetroot can be a dark pinkish purple. Lettuce can be purple. Amethysts are very beautiful purple color, lavender is purple and its smell really reminds me of the color. There are purple jellyfish, corals, butterflies, beetles, mushrooms, crabs, really striking purple birds. It's a rare, but very unique color. And by the way grey is my favourite! It's the color of my eyes, of stone and metal, of mist and clouds of the moon dust. A lot of animals and birds have soft grey fur and feathers. Some wood and soil is really pretty grey. It may appear dull and boring to others, but for me it's really precious.

To be fair the ones he did not guess were really close to the true colors. It's interesting how similar colors even smell similar.

There was a movie about this with Brad Pitt I think. Theoretically it would be hard for your brain to process because you didn't learn as a child. It would probably require a ton of work with a visual therapist. Kinda like physiotherapy.

It might be interesting to a blind person to know the geometry of sight. Imagine you inside a ball. You can see the half of the ball in front of you. You can only read clearly what is in a small cone directly ahead. The rest is there but not sharp or readable. And we do not sense the outer edge, it just does not exist in our brain. To sense what is behind us we use ears! 😁

He gave everyone the answer when he told you about Spilling cola. If you don’t wipe correctly, eventually, you’re going to feel it. Just like he felt stickiness on the floor and returned to clean it again. Also the overuse of napkins to clean some thing up (toilet paper).

  • @michaelcallaghan4073

Being legally blind doesn’t mean he can’t see anything. He can definitely see to some degree.

  • @WanderingWayfinderLibrarian

Some hardcore body-modification people have put magnets in their fingertips and with a bit of time the nerves inside their fingers adjust to the magnet, so the electrical field impulse felt by the magnet can be physically felt by the person if the wave is catchy enough. Someone turns on the microwave or you get a phone call on an older cell phone and you can feel a slight hum in the digits. I've done some experiments with just using a bunch of button sized neodymium magnets because I'm not about to stick metal into my fingerpads voluntarily but using bandaids and less than a 25 dollar purchase off amazon i could definitely feel voltage humming inside wires and walls. Do you have any sense of that?

  • @matthewtheobald1231

The reason you can miss something right in front of you is because you have to be looking at it. With sound you always hear everything around you, but with sight you only see what you're looking at. You have a field of view in front of you, but our eyes only can really look at one thing at a time. We see what's around that thing, but only the thing we are actively looking at looks totally clear. Things in your peripheral vision get gradually less and less clear the further out they are from the center of your vision. Also, the brain evolved to filter out a lot of information so we don't get overwhelmed by our senses. So we aren't really seeing everything in our field of view perfectly. Our brain only focuses and takes notices of a couple of things at a time.

But how do you know if you are dreaming or not? I have very intense visual dreams. Most of the time, I can’t even tell I’m dreaming. But when I’m awake I know I’m awake, because things *look* different when I’m awake. More crisp and clear.

Of course blind people can 'understand' vision - even if they can't experience it. Just as we can understand how dolphins 'see' inside an object using a sort of sonar sensory perception.

Dreamless sleep. You don't see black if you sleep without dreaming, you see nothing due to faded consciousness and the absence/lack of thoughts. This is arguably the best explanation of what completely blind people see since everyone can experience it. A better explanation than that closing one eye malarkey.
