  • In todays video we are top dressing with jacks MAGIC compost along with seeding with Barenbrug Extreme dwarf rye, its important to use top dressing when seeding as this gets the seed off to the best start and I think Jacks Magic is the best at doing this and as a by product we increase the biology in the subsurface meaning we get the most out of future feeds, so enjoy the video.

It’s a little bit patchy/thin (which I was expecting given that it’s still new). Should I top dress and seed like you’ve done? The “expert” here is worried about the small bars in the spreader missing areas, but wasted a bunch of time spreading all this compost by hand (unevenly) and brushed it in (unevenly) with an old broom. I guess his time is worthless since he did it for free. 🤷‍♂️

Hi Dan. My turf was laid 18 months ago. Is it too young to scarify like you’ve done in this video? It looks like it needs a good scarify. The guy who turfed it didn’t do a great job, he didn’t put any top dress/compost down, said it didn’t need it. Would just a scarify and jacks magic be enough or shall I seed it aswell?

It's getting harder to find Jack's Magic and within the next two years it'll have disappeared completely because of the peat. Someone mentioned it has a very high peat content so stock up while you can. West+ is quite good if you can find it but nowhere near as good as Jacks.

Dan , my grass is killing me since I returfed in September 2019 ...I got to March 2020 and the start of lockdown and my grass looked stunning till I realised it was full of meadow grass 😖 I have spent all year 2020 and 2021 digging out clumps of Poaana and reseeding .. I scarified an reseeded sept lasst year and I have airiated and reseeded again a fortnight ago with a fork ...nearly killed me ..still no new grass coming through but the meadow grass is rife again 😒 I've used "jack's " all the time and I'm losing the will to continue !!! I am in a similar boat, untested, but I plan to use my plug puller to make light work of pulling the meadow grass, I then have a large tray I am growing seed in, once that germinates and slightly matures I will pop it in the holes from where I have removed the poa annua, I may have found a source for a pre emergent which I may invest in and hopefully minimise this battle next year.
