~TL (and Chemistry?) Notes~
1:27 - Japanese certainly doesn't have as much orthography not matching the spoken language as English, but we can see one here. Matsuri corrects Arurandeis' spelling of the incorrect konnichiwa into konnichiha.
1:31 - Morumotto Kei-san - Clever and cute pun by Matsuri. "Moru" is from "mole" in Chemistry, "motto" is the "mot" from the animal "marmot." Kei-san is the name Kei and the honorific "san", but the pun is that "keisan" means calculation.
3:18 - 3:38 - So, they got this kinda backwards. Skin's pH hangs around 5, so it's mildly acidic and soap is generally mildly basic. I'm not sure if Aruran purposely just went along since Matsuri was understanding the theoretical concepts and didn't want to disrupt that or what, because his science is correct after this for the parts I've watched so far.
But he also says that soap is effective against germ because of the acidity. It's actually because the molecular make-up of soap has a hydrophillic head (attracted to water) and a hydrophobic tail (rejects water, attracted to fats and oils) What this means for washing is that the tails will latch on/pierce the fatty membranes of germs and since the other half is stuck on water molecules, it'll drag it off of our skin when we rinse. Germs with thick membranes that can't be pierced still get surrounded and dragged away.
At least, this is my understanding. I haven't been in school in a while.
6:26 - 6:37 - The Japanese terminology for acids and bases can be confusing for Japanese people because of the similarities. Acid(suisan), oxalic acid (shuusan) basically any acid is (something) + (san). Bases(enkisei) often, but not always, have hydroxides (OH) which are known as (suisanka). The confusion stems from suisanka having "san" in it as well. His example has suisanka(hydroxide) natoriumu(natrium, or sodium).
7:34 - "SUI He Li Be BoKu NO FuNe" is the beginning of a Japanese mnemonic to memorize the Periodic Table. In Japan, H is known as SUIso, He Li Be are as is, Bo is B, Ku is C, NO is N and O together, Fu is F and Ne is as is. In Japanese it looks like 水平リーベ僕の船. The リーベ "liebe" is German for love. So, it sorta means "I, a sailor, love my ship". But it's kinda nonsense since it has to fit into the scheme of the mnemonic.
8:08 - 8:35 - I think Aruran explains this all very well, I just wanted to explain 8:18 some. The reason he says this is because there are Japanese companies who push that nonsense in order to sell their products, and as an entertainer, he doesn't want to cause any issues for himself or Cover. So, instead of directly attacking those claims, he sidesteps it by talking about similar statements made about negative ions vs Covid. Respect.
8:56 - Introverts and Extroverts (陰キャら・陽キャラ) They are often translated as "introverts and extroverts" but I just wanted to make it clear, like most translations, these are not 1 to 1. Our perception of what introverts and extroverts are are a bit different from Japanese perceptions of "inkyara and youkyara" There is a lot similar but there are some differences. There's a more "emotional" nuance to "inkyara and youkyara" where "inkyara" are kinda gloomy and depressing in addition to being introverted. A "downer" you could say. And "youkyara" are cheerful and excited in addition to being extroverted. While in the west, we seem to be more focused on the ability to socialize and being "energized" or "drained" from social interactions. That's not to say being gloomy or cheerful isn't part of the meaning for English, it's just not the focus and vice-versa for the Japanese counterpart.
I guess a good example is if you've seen Bocchi the Rock because of the focus they put on Bocchi's gloominess and Kita's cheerfulness.
9:00 - Grammar error: Should be a couple commas to put a pause for hydroxides. "...introverted ions, hydroxides, do... "
10:42 - This example. Jeez.
11:13 - 塩(en) and 塩(shio) Same kanji, both mean salt, but they refer to the scientific and the condiment respectively.
13:15 - I basically wanted everyone to be able to enjoy the vibe of this stream a little bit. I don't have plans to do anymore, but if you guys like it then I can probably make one more video from this, maybe where she tries to calculate moles. I love this kinda stuff so I don't mind, just let me know! If there's enough interest, then I'll do it!
I just wanna say thanks for your explanation, especially the part about inkya and youkya, cuz so many clippers just translate it as introvert/extrovert and it kinda peeves me
thank you for translating this stream!!! If it's not a bother and you have the time, I surely want more of TL from the stream!! It's interesting listening to Aran teaching Chemistry to other people!! I want to learn too!
Yeah, I love this stuff too. Hopefully other people do lol
Dang, that was actually really interesting. Thanks for the translation!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the translation, I imagine it's a tough one to TL
Thanks for the great clip and your additional notes. I do love me chem.
No problem! It was fun to do!
tbh i literally cannot understand how some people dislike chemistry, like yes i know it has all these occasionally troublesome calucations but who actually cares about that when the Cool Science Factor is so much greater? hopefully more people will see the light after witnessing this sophisticated intellectual exchange in which an italian man teaches god herself about the #1 best scientific discipline
imo some dislike chemistry because some teachers prefer the students solving the calculations and keep them in the classroom most of the time and less time experimenting in lab to see how the reactions works
having a shitty teacher that literally tells you they hate you in front of the class definitely is a factor.
but also you have things like this very topic that will never, _ever_ be relevant for anyone deciding to work in chemistry or adjacent fields, yet you still have to do it.
learning the basics about bases, salts and neutralization was neat tho, that has actual application in your everyday life.
I enjoyed chemistry through high school but when I got past high school level it felt like things were randomly breaking the rules and I just couldn't grasp it
it seems a pretty fun way to learn chemistry if you are a high school student ... I wish that I had something like this when I was one
Matsuri's pun with youkyara is so close to just being cation I wanna scream
I actually looked it up and the word for cation is either カチオン or 陽イオン (like 陽キャラ) so Matsuri LITERALLY got cation through pure analogy (Aruran even saying it) but then made a cat pun. Understanding has made the suffering worse. And for completeness, anion isnt 院イオン (its just アニオン) so that was a miss regardless
tskr italian god clip
thanks for the translation. tskr
I would love to see more of this stream translated!! I really wanted to know what they were saying since ive taken chemistry but because of the language barrier i could only understand bits and pieces, especially with the scientific names being different from english.
I hear ya. It's not getting as much traction as I would have liked though. I'll put a follow-up on my list, but it'll be low prio
Thank you so much, it's more niche but I live seeing these kinds of streams
great vid fam translation tskr
I think this video triggered some kind of ptsd I suppressed long ago.
Not even in the sciences and still gotta take chem, yup.
Appreciate the translation! Nice Clip!
Thanks!
fascinating how this popped up in my recommendations a day or two after talking about this very topic (mols) in one of the fan discords.
wonder what sparked this stream idea too.
In another one of their collabs, Aru mentioned that he had a teaching license and taught chemistry and I think Matsuri was like, "let's do a stream where you teach me!"
People hate Chemistry with moles? It is just cross-multiplication, you don't even have to worry with the formulas.
this is a really interesting and unique clip, thank you! your clips are always very high quality.
Thank you so much!!!
this is so awesome
Right? Very cool!
1:03 wait why would people hate stoichiometry? All you need to do is basic arithmetic, it's literally just free marks
That's interesting. It's been a while since I've thought about chemistry - Don't really need it most of the time even though I did a bit in university... So it's pretty rusty now.
