The players on each team arguing about what happened every time one team feels wronged brings me back to my elementary school recess days
They wear stripes because they want players to think they just got out of prison and are tougher than they actually are.

Even with their distinctive uniforms, referees are still sometimes mistaken for players. I remember a playoff game in 1993 between the Bulls and Knicks when the Bulls were on a fast break: Scottie Pippen caught a pass and had literally no defender in front of him to the basket, but instead of taking it home, he passed it forward to a referee who was running down the sideline. That was such a brain fart that even Phil Jackson was laughing at it.
Next time I have brain fart, I'm just going to remind myself of this.

Much as the refs can suck from tme to time, having no refs would just be a millionaire version of playing pickup ball at the park and watching 2 dudes swing at each other over fouls and the score, which inevitably devolves into a brawl.

The term referee may have come into gridiron football by way or soccer, or more likely rugby football, but it's much older than the modern game. 1549 is the first attestation in the OED... some sort of religious argument, or course.
