#7. You can attempt to downshift even with high rpm. If the Rpm is too high the car will not downshift until the engine is at a safe engine speed. It's it's not you will get a tone alert and the gear number will flash but stay in that gear
I have a very important question. If I’m just cruising is it ok to shift my car at 6-6500 rpm instead of 3-4000. My redline is 7300 on my b58 and supposedly there’s nothing wrong with shifting close or near to redline is that true ? It feels strange because I’m slowly accelerating and the car keeps getting louder and louder as the rpm’s slowly raise
I mean for up shifts Ofcoarse not downshifts
so it just teaches you good downshifting habits?
@@zeppkfwpretty much...dummy proof
Thanks for keeping our transmission safe! 🤙🏻
Great video. A lot of stays true for a true manual car shifting except the first one. I have not personally tested either on my Q50, but I don't think the car will let you downshift past redline (money shifting as in manual), so less worry about that part.
In Just got my 2015 infinity q50s in May this video is very helpful I love your content.
Glad to have you here!
Good video that covers good points. I wanted to mention that with downshifting automatics, with most vehicles the shift ranges are computer controlled- so it won’t allow you to enter a gear that exceeds maximum engine rpm. in most cases not all
Yea
as someone that recently picked up a 37x and has been honestly hating how it downshifts to early, this is the much needed advice ive been looking for. Thank you for these vids!
Glad you stopped by!
Also, check to see if there is a transmission reflash/tune available for your model. There was for mine and it was night and day better. Have to check at the dealership
Appreciate the quick follow up video - No one in my family is into cars, never had anyone to talk through stuff like this. I feel like I understand what the car likes and doesn't, but the explanations are interesting to listen to. Congrats on 9k.
Thanks Dylan! I’m happy to have you following along!
@@SpeedCultureStudios Especially in a Lexus, or any car for that matter, what happens if I never use the paddle shifters?
@@yukhan5525 no need to use them if you don't want to
There are safety features from downshifting too high!! It’ll just simply beep and not let u
Speaking from experience??? 😆
@@mikeschaner5853 actually alot of paddle shift cars do this. Shoot my wife's 2011 Ford Edge sport has the same feature I can have the car in manual and it will function the same way
I may have downshift too quick because it went to 7000 rpm and the car slowed down quick
100% from experience on my side haha
Nice J. Personally, I like to drive in “manual” because I grew up driving a 5 speed. Cornering is much more controllable and you can brake faster with engine braking. Plus it just sounds way better when you keep it a little higher in the RPMs. 😁
Agreed and same. Always had a 5spd car in the stable back in the day lol.
Same here. I love the grab in manual mode.
Awesome video man!👍🏽 useful information for anyone with a sports car with paddle shifts!
Glad you liked it!!
Yes there is a safety feature for downshifts if your to high in the rpm , but if you are slowing down you can most definitely squeeze that shift in but it will run out quickly and if your not paying attention you will hit redline
New subscriber here! Been watching your videos for a week now. I just got myself a 2018 Q50 RS and i can't wait to try your custom exhaust system!
Make sure to send me clips on IG!!
Congrats. Just got mine too in October and since it's CPO, I'm scared to do anything to it. Lol
Learned alot with this video- Thank you!
Glad to hear that! Thanks!
Dude this video is sooo helpful! 👌 thank you!
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching
Again thanks for this very informative video! I was thinking if somebody will make a video about something like this! Man, you nailed it! Learn a lot!! Will definitely do manual mode with my daily drive Q! Inspired my Q with your Q!! Oh, by the way give a holla to boostinmotion, he just totaled his Q, with some some stupid driver not paying attention. More power and God bless! 💪🏾
Thanks man!! You’ll enjoy driving in manual mode. Makes it feel like a different car!
And yeah I saw boosts video. Really sucks!
Great video man this helped me a lot and taught me a lot as well.
Awesome glad to hear that!
Great info!
Great information thank for sharing.
Thanks, Randy!
This video really helped me thank you
Really glad to hear that!!
Got an m56S, pretty sure has the same transmission. There was a transmission reflash/retune from the dealership available for some of these cars. I got mine done, only an hour of labor, and holy shit it was night and day better. Mine used to be a bit clunky and what not, but after the tune it seems damn near flawless relative to what it is. It was just night and day for standard driving and performance.
Really good video! And to add to the overrev or “money shift” topic no the car won’t let you do it until you can match the revs for the next gear! It’ll beep at you just like if you try to upshift under 2k rpms.
That’s great to know
Lol i just got my g37xS, decided to watch this to see if I have been doing anything wrong, and Im good
I like to upshift over 3k rpms and downshift at 2500 rpms. Been doing this for 2 years during day to day city / highway driving. The tranny still runs like new BUT I make sure to change the transfluid every year
Perfect video❗️
Great show man.. Definitely learned a few things in both these vids as my q70s has the same 7 spd... Ive learned that even ecu controlled gear select is still too high of gear... 30 mph is 1600 rpm in 4th gear.. I put in manual for 3rf.. Seem 10mph per gear is abt perfect for everyday cruising... The ecu downshift is a bit slow also.. GM had a thing if you tap WOT Twice it would trigger a downshift even if you don't end up flooring it. Gonna see if that works in these... Did you ever check out that "Go Fast" energy drink??? They're local here in Co and they're usually 2/$4... If you have a Matco Rep; they can get it too... Gotta get the case tho.. Only $24.. Anyways.. Thanks again for the tons of info... Sorry for the rant.. Hope you had a great Turkey Funeral??....??? Happy holidays...
Always looking for a good energy drink!
I think the downshift portion of this video truthfully belonged in “how to use paddle shifters” video. Honestly, not even a question since I would assume more people here are leaning to the spirited driving. So they’ll be itching to not feel like they are missing any info regarding that. And if it weren’t for this video, I would have felt very uncomfortable about the sound of the high RPM’s kinda just going and going when I was done with my pulls as they slowly dropped. With this video it’s a more clear picture….so downshift portion belongs with rest for that picture.
Bike analogy was perfect
glad you caught that!
I had been looking for a video like this, I've just started using the manual mode on my G37 but sometimes I'm worried about if the way I drive will harm my transmission.
great video bro
Thanks a lot!
Great info
Thanks man!
Thank you 🙏
When I had my g35 and 37 I would always shift down at red lights but I just liked to hear the downshift personally also I've never used paddles but these videos are great and your car is goals 👌
Thanks man!!
Tunnels where’s the best !
I miss my G35
What years?
@@THEOAKLANDBABY510 what years ? I had 07 infinity g35 coupe
I usually shift at around 2.5 rpm or 3, when downshifting I usually down shift at around 2.5 or 2 rpm, if I’m cruising, I keep my rpm at around 3 or 2.5 when just cruising
Good video 🔥
Thanks!
Scared the shit out of me with number 2 😂😂 I tried it once thinking maybe it will be like the lambos that go to neutral but it didn’t work and I was like wait… mine didn’t blow up but maybe that’s why it’s shifting weird now😂
i would go back and fourth in my altima because it kinda popped but like id have to get a tune for the g37 and id drive it normally like you say and it would pop right. I wouldnt use it all the time just some times cause i know tunes like that can fuck the engine up
All of this is the exact same in my g37x just shows how similar and true they kept the 2014-15 model year
Yeah not much change
Has anyone had the issue with the paddle shifters not working at random times? I started experiencing this when racing on the oval and had to quickly resort to the console to continue.
Learned some these lessons the hard way
Live and learn
Don't switch to manual mode and then forget about it. Engine screams away, hey why doesn't my car shift? Duh, that's me. Lol
Lol right
@@ANerdsNerd that will kill the momentum for sure. I just don’t like how auto shifts-it’s consistent sure, but shifts a bit early for me
@Asem Elmagboul technically yes, but you certainly lose some element of control in terms of being able to utilize the clutch.
G35 bro over here. I have to remember not to keep it in drive and just keep it in manual because at this point if I'm in drive ill knock it into neutral trying to upshift from a light.
I think that’s happened to all of us at one point or another haha
Lmao, same man... I then tried to put it back in drive... Idk bout that cuz the car jumped bro lol
I used to go full throttle let off and go up in gear bcs i didnt know if i was gonna fuck up something keeping my foot on the gas and going up in gear so like 😞
Not sure if this applies to the paddle shifters but the car manual mentions that depending on how fast or slow you move the shifter on the 7 speed AT, the car will respond accordingly. Faster/more aggressive shifts will result in a faster/more aggressive gear change, while slower shifts will lean towards a more smoother gear change.
I have a 13 G37x and it does do this when I'm on auto-manual, but no paddle shifters so not sure if this applies to that
Yes I sort of allude to that in the video-shifts are much quicker when accelerating hard
Note
Do not let your foot off the pedal when accelerating and up shifting.
Great video as always! I was noticing you weren’t in sport mode but was on personal mode. Are you able to show us what you used for personal mode?
I've shown that in previous videos a long time ago. In your driver settings menu, you can select what you would like Personal Mode to be. In my case, Personal Mode is: Sport Mode with Active Trace Control OFF. So regular sport mode is JUST sport mode, but keeps active trace control on, which uses your rear breaks to help maintain control of the vehicle, which I do not need assistance with. So in my personal settings, I turn that off.
@@SpeedCultureStudios i set my personal settings but they revert back to Std when the car starts
@@TheBlazeboy69 they shouldn’t. It’s been a long time-was there not a save or set option?
Crap I’m guilty of #1, I let my foot off the throttle when I tried accelerating hard a few times
You’ll get a much more crisp and firm shift keeping in the throttle!
If you let off a bit , hold, shift, rinse and repeat... It works well.. Especially useful in the q70 v8 when getting on freeway 😆 this this takes off 😆
Great video man! Hey (side note) since I've had my catback installed modeled after your set up, I've noticed the front of the catback (just past the cats and before the muffler in the mid) gets a vibration from 1400-1900 rpm. I notice it especially when cruising or decelerating in that range. Does your set up have a similar characteristic? I didn't go for test pipes... being in VA i need to get emissions inspections -_- thanks for another great video!
Thanks Michael. No I do not get that vibration. Did you have flex pipe installed?
@@SpeedCultureStudios Yep had flex pipe installed. Im going to have the shop that fabricated it check it out. I tried welding some jhooks to the pipes after the cats and mounted them to undercarriage. It helped the vibrating but then all that noise and energy was being transferred into the cabin. Took those off and I'm back to square 1. If I stay above 2k there is no issue.. funny thing.
@@michaellanda8642 That is strange to me. I had some vibration early on because I did NOT install flex pipe right away. Once flex pipe was added, all vibration went away. Let me know what you find out!
hey thank you so much for the video. Do you cause damage to the transmission if the car is already driving in automatic and switch to manual or vise versa? I worry because when i shift back from manual to automatic the revs have to catch itself but feel like its damaging itself
No issue at all
Wow! I'm brand new to using the paddle shifters in my 2023 Camaro LT1, and this video pretty much answered my question as to why I couldn't accelerate fast at ALL on 7th gear! I was worried that my car was broken 😅 Thanks dude.
However, I did try to step on it and accelerate on that 7th gear about 4-5 different times... Do you think I harmed the car in any way? 😮
Awesome! Thanks for checking in! I’m sure your car is fine.
have you had any issues with the transmission getting warm? i know they make a trans cooler kit, would you recommend it? i'm getting a Q50 3.7L next month and trying to get an idea of everything i'll be doing. i drive pretty "spirited" haha
If you do a lot of racing, a trans cooler would be helpful!
I drive a tuned VW Golf FWD. When doing a launch is it better to use paddle shifters or sport mode auto? Using paddle I admit I have had a few bad shifts that lugged out due to me shifting too soon as I feel like the rpms are getting too high with wheel spin.. I also have the option of pushing the shifter to the right and use 100% manual shifting. Or I just suck at paddle shifters.
I prefer paddles because I like to control the rpm but it definitely takes practice to get timing just right. I also don’t like going from auto to manual mid pull so I generally stay in manual the whole time.
Just subbed man 👍 great tips. just wondering which exhaust do you have
Its my SCS custom catback. Check out my other vids!
Hey, I do at times use paddle shifters if I want to slow down(in the city or highway). I downshift lets say from 5th/4th to 3rd, then if needed to 2nd gear. Basically in doing this I am trying to put less wear on the brakes. Something tells me that this may not be good for the transmission. Any ideas?
Shouldn’t hurt it given you aren’t downshifting too early.
I do the same thing in my g37, I’m pretty sure it’s engine braking and it shouldn’t cause any problems. Plus the car doesn’t let you money shift it anyways, it’ll chirp at you and not downshift if it’s too high in the rev range
There is a safety feature that prevents a premature down-shift. You get a beep and a flash of the current gear on the dash, like when trying to execute a premature up-shift.
Interesting that's pretty cool
@@DiaperSNiFFER most newer cars have down shift protection
Hey bro what do you think is the best time to shift from 1st to 2nds I have a 370z auto your video helped a lot. I can’t find the sweet spot I try to shift at 3rpms but sometimes I make the car jump I’m making sure to not take my foot maybe I’m not pressing hard enough not sure.
If you’re just cruising driving normally shift at 2500 rpm. If you’re racing, shift at 6500 or 7000 if you can time it good to not let it hit redline. But you want to be floored in that case too.
off topic question, is the orange light on the dash because of your tires?
Wheels yes. I do not have tpm sensors
Why is your mpg around 15.7? Do you drive in the city a lot? I have the same engine in a 14 q60 (G37 chassis) and I get 23 and kinda drive it hard
I average about 21-22 with mixed driving. I had just reset the mileage and then was doing pulls lol.
Great content. I have a question tho, have you done anything to make your exhaust sound like that or is that stock?
Check out the channel man! Lots of videos documenting every mod
@@SpeedCultureStudios I definitely will. I have a question tho. Which one is louder, a muffler delete or a straight pipe? Also what else can be done to the make it louder other than those 2 options because im new to this car stuff but very interested and want my car to be decently loud and have a nice growl. Appreciate you responding
@@karumosr3219 straight pipe is garbage. I have a ton of videos and several dedicated to exhaust so just check out the channel! You’ll get a lot of good ideas!
Does holding up shift put you back into auto mode? I did it earlier and when it went back into drive it revved up way higher before upshifting back
No. I have not noticed it doing anything when holding up. If you're shifter is in the manual position, the car will stay in manual mode. You can have the shifter in D, but begin using the paddles. If you do not touch the paddles for a given period of time, it will default back to drive.
A lot of these things are not issues on my 2019 Q50 RS. For example, if I up-shift off gas it blimps the throttle just like on downshift when needed.
What do you mean it blips the throttle on upshift? I don’t know why it would do that. Should never need to blip the throttle upshifting
So when downshifting to ensure youre not trying to pass in a high gear do you keep your foot on the gas as you downshift from 7th to 6th? or do you let off 100%
In that situation, you can keep on the throttle, but again, I wouldn’t be in it too much
When I downshift from 3 to 2 those lower ones my car rocks back and forth how do I downshift more smoothly
Are you on the brakes when downshifting? Try it with no pressure on the brake pedal.
that mountain bike analogy hit different
Helpful to visualize like that!
Is it okay when roll racing to put the car in manual mode to get it to the gear hanging where you want it and when u punch it you slap the shifter back to automatic to have the computer shift for you? I have no idea if it’s bad or not
No it’s not bad. A lot of people do that for some reason. I don’t know why you would want to but there is no mechanicals involved, just electronic so it won’t hurt anything
I have an 06 g35x how do I use manual mode effectively. Everytime I do it from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd it clunks. I'm not an expert at manual driving. This is an automatic with manual mode and a stick shifter. Do you have a video on that?
Yes just search how to use paddle shifters q50
did you get the sport or another trim? and do you have a AWD or RWD im looking to buy a Q50 and wanted to know .also witch is best for the 3.7
I have RWD-it’s my preference.
I found a base model because it is by far the lightest trim and I knew I would be changing wheels and suspension anyway, so no need for the sport package. And the brake upgrade can be done for well under $1000.
Got a 2020 Q50 3.0T as a loner today. (My wife's 2020 qx60 had a window issue.) I have a 2014 q50 3.7. I was very surprised how fast and responsive the 3.0 twin turbo was (non red sport). Have you driven a 3.0t q50? This was my first time. Just wondering about what your thoughts were. I was surprisingly impressed. Definitely not as nice sounding as a VQ though.
I had an 18 3.0t as a rental and I was unimpressed to be honest. Definitely a nice car and yes they are responsive-twin turbo is nice, but it did not excite me like I hoped it would. Now if it were tuned-totally different story!
@@SpeedCultureStudios Hey, I agree. My wife asked me if now I wanted a new q50 and I said no. The interior is basically the same and I think the new tail lights look worse. Plus, I love the shake and rumble of the VQ on cold start. I don't have a full exhaust, just a Stillen Axleback, but it still sounds so good (wife used to drive my car also and that was all I could get away with.)
i found that when i let go off accelerator at certain rpm and shift up my car pops and i love doing it but i wanna if that’s bad for my trans ?
It’s fine I’m sure
Higher I've got an infinity skyline and have you ever heard of them
This is random, but which aftermarket brake pads and rotors are you using? I bought mine from BrakePerformance (slotted/drilled) and they are making horrible squeaky/grinding noise. Thanks 🙏

Speed Culture Studios thanks man! Good content and you’re always very helpful and timely with replies
SG2 February thank you!
ok about the transmission "shifting while foot is off the gas" would that cause the transmission to make a clunky noise while shifting?
no it shouldn’t. have motor mounts and trans mount checked.
Interesting video I never knew you could mess up a automatic. I’m coming from an accord 6-6
They make it difficult with the safety features, but if you’re not careful or paying attention it can lead to premature failure for sure
WOW, Ur Avg MPG is 15.5. Damn, that's low. I'm at AVG 25.8 and i drive in Sport & Be BALLIN'...lol. Sweet, Stay Safe, Be Safe!!!!
Haha no I average about 21 with a lot of city driving and a heavy foot. I had just reset the mpg and was driving in heavy traffic.
@@SpeedCultureStudios 33.6 here..with a 15 Q50SH 😏
@@TheBlazeboy69 nice!
@@TheBlazeboy69 how? Lol
At what RPM should you up shift at? Is there an RPM that is too low too high? I noticed if you have an exhaust/BOV that you want to show off, Some q50 owners let the RPM go high RPMs before shifting but naturally the car shifts around 3-3.5 RPM
I talk about this in my previous paddle shifters video but I shift around 2800-3000 if just cruising. I like to hear the exhaust so I shift a little late. 2500 is probably good. If too low, the car will not let you shift, so no worries.
Speed Culture Studios I was also wondering if you know if there’s is damage or risk with damaging too late ie in 3s/4s?
@@scgamerd You will hit rev limiter. Some people like to hit limiter all the time--its not particularly good to constantly bang off the limiter, but if you're a split second late in shifting, it'll be fine.
Hey man just a question who makes the front splitter you have on your car?
It's just a 3pc amazon splitter, but for the 2018 non-sport. Fits perfect.
OMG number 1. I would do all the time and a Code Came up because of air mixture in the comustion chamber was messed up... Fudge on a stick.
I don’t think it’s related to the shifting with foot off the throttle. The trans will still shift no problem and it won’t hurt anything-I was just saying that it will not be a firm or smooth shift, especially if under heavy load
Dam I Def did the back and forth thing when test driving woops
Personally I would ask if Sheron could turn me into a saiyan. If they can teach all of the others how to go SSJ, then so could I (scratchy back?)
I bought a vw golf 2018 auto..and while driving on the highway today at 65 mph hit the left sided minus tab three times .. first by accident and then to try to stop it - the rpms went up to 5.5 and then down by itself after a few seconds. Did I do damage?? Thank you
No. 5500 is not that high. It’s fine

No. The car won’t let you downshift too early.
What your saying auto 370 wouldnt be good for dragon runs? Mostly 2 3 shift 4th maybe.
It would be great for dragon runs! Had a great time with the Q at the dragon
Can I downshift, then slam it, shift up, slap it back to D, then slap it back to DS?
If you want, but why
I tried to downshift to first gear when stopping at a stop sign but i got some knocks. If i’m at second gear and i approach a stop sign can i just stop the car? will it automatically downshift?
Yes it will. Don’t shift down to 1st when rolling. Let the car do it
@@SpeedCultureStudios what if your car has active rev matching? My friends auto 370Z blips down to 1st like it was a PDK lol
@@leg37ndary91 the car does have rev matching-I discussed it in the video. It should not drop to 1st on its own though unless slowing to a stop.
Does step 3 count for manuals too?for example driving 60mph in 6th
60 in 6th is totally normal. What you don’t want to do is floor it in those later gears. It puts a lot of strain on the engine, so it’s best to down shift if trying to accelerate
When you downshift do you still have to press the gas in or let your foot off?
Usually you are off the gas because you’re trying to slow down.
downshifting in a high rpm or too soon, the system will not allow you to. Also, if you have the power or in the power range/speed, you can pass in 7th gear, if you know what you're doing. It depends on the pass situation if you need to go 100% throttle or partial throttle.
You can “pass” in 7th if your cruising or moderately accelerating, but do not go wot in 7th under any circumstance. Your car would downshift for you if in automatic, so you should too in manual. It’s not a passing gear and if the rpm is too low, going wot in 7th puts unnecessary stress on the engine.
@@SpeedCultureStudiosI'm scared 😟
Hey do you know any good axle back brands for the q50?
I would not purchase an axleback honestly.
Does the q50 redline or shift for u in manual mode ?
It does not shift for you. It’ll bang limiter if you let it
Can you do a video about the triptronic mode?
That’s literally what this video is. What are you asking for?
Some cars pulling both paddles puts it in neutral I think the newer ss Camaro does it
That's correct--In some cars, that is how you use launch control, which would be super cool.
I wish my car would hit neutral when I did that lol
#10 don't downshift when braking on snowy roads. Will cause the to slide. Almost rear ended someone like that. And I was going pretty slow and braking cautiously. I decided to downshift from 3 to 2 and car started sliding lol I have a g37x
That’s a good point. Don’t worry too much about that here in South Carolina but yes if you downshift too high in slippery conditions you can lose traction
my friends say that slowing down to a stop and shifting into first gear is a bad idea. is that true?
I stated this in the video. Never downshift to 1st unless stopped. Some people do it-I was just told not to. It’s a starting gear, there is no need to ever downshift to 1st
@@SpeedCultureStudios got it. thanks for reaching out!!
Do you tap on the break a bit then downshift?
No, but you can downshift whole braking
i have accidentally neutral dropped my Q50 several times lol. I would take off from light in manual thinking i'm in D, go to upshift and end up in neutral, car revs up I realize mistake and drop back into drive lolol
That’s happened to more people thank you think!
Happened to me man lol
Want to hear something funny?? The mustang in the video you used, is me... mustang week 2014 in myrtle beach SC. Not a great day lol...
