  • Zach Wilson came out of nowhere, but in 2020 established himself as a top 5 NFL draft pick.
    My scouting report on Justin Fields: • Scouting Justin Fields...
    This week’s film breakdown analyzes BYU Quarterback Zach Wilson as he enters the 2021 NFL draft. Wilson has seemingly come out of nowhere but has established himself as a potential top 5 pick. He is one of the most gifted QB’s in this year's class and could make an immediate impact in the NFL after a mediocre beginning to his college career. Where the heck did this guy come from? This episode uses the coaches all-22 game film to analyze BYU Quarterback Zach Wilson.

      Wilson's frame looks small. The chart says 6'3" but my eyes say 5'11". My concern is whether the big bodies in the NFL punish him for extending plays that he should let die. Fields on the other hand can take a beating. Against Clemson in 2020 Fields was beaten up and still performed at all-pro level to win the game.
      I think both of them will take about 3 seasons to develop as their mechanics are concerning but that arm talent is no joke. I do think Fields is a system QB while Wilson can work in multiple systems but Fields has more upside with his insane athletic ability.

    In my opinion and using his stats, he was already showing flashes of his 2020 season in his freshman year and was okay in his sophmore year due to an injury. He has always been a smart and precise player as evidenced by having a completion percentage of 65.9 and 73.5 when healthy. His first year he only threw 3 interceptions just like his junior year and had 12 TDs thrown which is not bad considering almost all the other QBs did not have a good first year. I think he is going to be good for the Jets, they got a good one.

    7:16, the receiver actually had the db beat there so he probably could have aired it out over top for a TD instead of the back shoulder. Than again that would have turned that throw from a ridiculous throw to absolutely ridonkulous. Not sure how many people would have the arm to do that on the run like that, so can’t really fault him for it. Crazy throw either way though.

    Not sure I'm into the "high accuracy, highly contested, high aggression" gun-slinging style. Sure it might work in college, but you can be sure if he tries this approach in the NFL, opposing cornerbacks are going to be extra motivated to get some INTs into their statline that game. And we've seen this before. He's called Jameis Winston. And while Wilson has a higher completion percentage, a QB can't make a completion himself. He needs a receiver that can make those grabs. Not sure any team that's able to draft a top 2 QB has a top grade wide receiver yet...
    Edit: That all being said, that trait is dictated by whatever his coach wants. His intangibles, traits, and mechanics all look great. He can make reads and he understands how plays develop. That's a very good sign.

  • @22vah
    @22vah Před 3 lety +1

    Nice video! The issue I have w Zach is that the majority of his plays/higjlights are wild and "off platform". The team that selects him is not gonna need him running around hurdling defenders. They will want him to make pres-nap reads, find the open WRs and more importantly live to see another play. Too much running around imo..... Its nice to run and make plays but as my franchise QB I need to make sure u can demonstrate more traditional QB traits. He's gonna need time to adjust and wont be ready in his first season as many are suggesting....

    As usual Alex, great analysis. Love it. Great job. Justin Fields is not better than Zach. Hos ability to make all the throws is so important and he’s athletic. The Jets are going to draft him. Put him in a shannahan based offense and watch out

      @AlexRollinsNFL  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Marc bro!! Yeah, I felt the same way the more I studied Wilson. I'd say Fields was put in a more difficult situation in terms of the defenses and pressure he faced, and since Wilson wasn't in those situations nearly as much, he's more of a projection. But I think his general ability to throw the ball is better than Fields

    To be honest I'm not sure the bit around 2:51 (the NAP defenders) is something to be so high on, in the NFL if you try to do that too often you're just going to throw picks. That's definitely a trick that is going to work wayyy more in college, especially against non-elite DBs/safeties like BYU plays against.
